If a wooden dowel is only slightly loose in an otherwise sound, accessible joint, glue and sawdust can help fill the gap. If the joint has failed, the better route is usually to take it apart carefully, clean the hole and fit a glue-coated fluted replacement dowel. These are different repairs: the first is for a modestly loose fit, not a universal fix for damaged or heavily loaded furniture.
First, decide what has come loose
Check whether the dowel is loose in its hole or whether an assembled joint has failed. A little extra room in a sound hole may be addressed by adding material around the dowel. A failed joint may need disassembly and a replacement dowel. If the surrounding wood is split, badly damaged or part of a highly loaded chair joint, do not assume a filler-style repair will restore it.
- Small gap, sound wood: Consider the glue-and-sawdust method for a dowel that is only a little loose or a slightly misshapen hole.
- Failed joint that can be safely separated: Clean out old glue and chips, then refit the joint with a fluted replacement dowel.
- Stressed chair, extensive damage or a repair where appearance and future disassembly matter: Proceed cautiously; more invasive methods have trade-offs.
For a slightly loose dowel, add bulk with glue and sawdust
In WOOD Magazine’s Fixing Loose Dowels demonstration, presenter Jim Heavey addresses a hole that is “a little too loose or misshapen,” including one enlarged during cleanup. He adds glue to the hole, makes a small glue-and-sawdust mixture, rolls the dowel in the mixture to build up its fit, then brings the pieces together.
Heavey describes the mixture as “just a little bit of a gruel here with some glue and sawdust.” Treat this as a demonstrated approach for a minor loose fit, not as a measured structural repair: the demonstration does not establish a universal glue brand, mixture ratio, clamp time or strength rating. If the dowel or surrounding wood is badly damaged, choose a more complete repair rather than relying on added bulk.

For a failed joint, disassemble and replace the dowel
If the joint can be taken apart without damaging sound wood, rebuilding it gives you access to clean the mating surfaces. WOOD Magazine’s Taking a Dowel Joint Apart guide describes careful separation, removal of stuck or broken dowels, and installation of a glue-coated fluted replacement.
Mark and separate the parts carefully
Mark components before disassembly if their orientation could be confusing. Use controlled force; do not keep escalating if a sound connection resists. For chair repairs in particular, WoodWorkers Guild of America notes that chair joints combine relatively light joints, substantial loads and continual movement. Its chair repair tutorial recommends patience and generally leaving a stubborn joint alone if it does not release with a few sharp mallet blows.

Remove a stuck dowel without enlarging the hole
WOOD Magazine describes escalating from a bar spreader and non-marring mallet to other methods, including alcohol, drilling a small access hole for more alcohol, or using a screw as a pull point for a broken dowel. Choose a method suited to the joint and avoid forcing the surrounding wood.
Once the dowel is out, remove glue residue and chips from the hole. The guide recommends turning a same-diameter drill bit by hand for cleanup: using an electric drill can change the hole’s shape and size, making a good fit harder to achieve.

Fit and glue the replacement
Measure the original dowel and the cleaned hole before choosing a replacement; the source does not establish one universal size. A fluted hardwood dowel is the replacement type recommended in the WOOD Magazine guide. Coat the dowel with glue and daub glue inside the holes so both mating surfaces receive adhesive. In a blind hole, avoid leaving a glob of glue at the bottom.
Be cautious about glue compatibility in old furniture. The chair tutorial warns that applying PVA glue to an old hide-glue joint may not create a strong bond and can complicate later repairs. If the existing adhesive is uncertain, do not assume that adding fresh glue over it is enough.

When a more extensive repair may be appropriate
For a joint that cannot be repaired by a simple refit, specialist methods have meaningful downsides. In Furniture Repair Tips: Fix Loose Joints, Tenons & More, Woodcraft describes epoxy injection as a fast but risky approach: it may fail, and a failed attempt can make later disassembly and reglueing extremely difficult. A through-dowel can reinforce some accessible loose joints, but it leaves holes that must be plugged and is not appropriate for cherished heirlooms.
Weigh the repair against the furniture’s use, appearance and future repairability. For a valuable or sentimental piece, a visible or hard-to-reverse fix may be a poor trade even if it seems convenient.
