If a GFCI won’t reset, unplug connected equipment, check accessible breakers and nearby GFCIs, then press RESET once. If it still will not latch, trips again, or shows a persistent fault indicator, leave it off and arrange qualified electrical diagnosis. The symptom alone does not identify the cause: the device may lack incoming power, detect an unresolved fault, be wired incorrectly, or have failed.
Why won’t my GFCI reset?
A ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) compares current flowing to equipment with current returning through the circuit. If the currents differ, it interrupts power; OSHA describes a typical threshold of approximately 5 milliamperes. A GFCI reduces some shock risks, but it does not protect against every electrical hazard, including contact with two live conductors. OSHA explains how GFCIs work.
To reset, a GFCI needs circuit power and must not be responding to a continuing fault. A failed device is another possibility. Several receptacles may be protected by one upstream GFCI, so a dead outlet may not be the one that needs resetting. The device may be a receptacle or a breaker.
What do I do if my GFCI outlet won’t reset?
Limit troubleshooting to exterior controls and breakers you can access safely. Do not open the receptacle box, touch wiring, bypass the GFCI, or repeatedly press RESET to force power back on.

- Identify what is affected. Note whether one receptacle, several outlets, or a larger part of the home has lost power. If you need to check an outlet, use a small lamp or other simple plug-in device; do not use a suspected faulty outlet if it appears damaged or wet.
- Unplug connected equipment. Disconnect appliances and portable equipment from the affected receptacle and any accessible outlets that may be downstream.
- Check the electrical panel. Look for an obviously tripped breaker. If one is tripped, follow its manufacturer’s normal reset instructions once. If it trips again, leave it off and contact an electrician.
- Look for another accessible GFCI. Check nearby areas for a tripped GFCI receptacle or breaker that could protect the dead outlet.
- Press RESET fully once. If power returns, use the device’s own TEST/RESET procedure to confirm it works. ESFI recommends monthly testing and says a GFCI whose test or reset functions do not work should be replaced. ESFI’s GFCI guidance describes the test and reset functions.
These checks cannot establish that hidden wiring is safe or that an underlying fault is gone. Stop if the device will not reset or trips again.
What the symptom can—and cannot—tell you
No indicator and no reset
No incoming power is one possible explanation. On the Leviton models covered by its indicator guidance, an off LED is associated with no power, and the device will not reset without circuit power. Check only accessible breakers and upstream GFCIs; internal power diagnosis is for a qualified electrician. Other brands and models may use different indicators. Leviton’s product instruction sheets are model-specific.

It resets, then trips again
Treat a repeat trip as an unresolved electrical condition, not an invitation to keep resetting. Unplugging equipment does not rule out moisture, a downstream wiring issue, or a defective GFCI. Leviton warns that continued tripping on its Smart GFCI can indicate an electrical hazard and advises contacting a licensed electrician. Leviton’s Smart GFCI troubleshooting guidance applies to that product line.
It will not reset after recent installation or replacement
Reversed LINE and LOAD connections are one documented possibility. Leviton’s GFTR1 instructions say the device ships tripped and cannot reset until wired correctly and supplied with power. The instructions call for power to be off before checking connections. Because this involves wiring inside an electrical box, have an electrician diagnose it unless you are qualified and permitted to do the work under local rules. Leviton’s GFTR1 instructions cover that model; do not assume every GFCI has identical wiring or status indications.

- Designed to improve immunity for reduced High Frequency (HF) nuisance tripping. providing increased compatibility with appliances and other electronics
- Continuously protects against electric shock & electrocution by interrupting power if a ground-fault is detected
- Required by the NEC for areas around the home within a close proximity to a water source (kitchen, bathroom, laundry room, basement, garage/carport, pool area)
- Patented reset/lockout feature prevents reset if the GFCI is unable to respond to a ground-fault or if it isn't wired properly. Regularly conducts an automatic self-test to ensure safety
- LED indicator provides simple, intuitive feedback on power and protection status
A Leviton device shows persistent red or blinking red
Use the instructions for the exact model. Leviton’s guidance for covered devices says a persistent red indication or inability to reset after the prescribed test sequence can mean the unit has a fault and may need replacement. LED colors and patterns are not universal across manufacturers.
The device is wet, hot, damaged, buzzing, or smells burnt
Do not touch or use it. Keep people away and seek qualified electrical help. Do not try to dry it and restore power as a fix.

How do I know if my GFCI outlet is bad?
You cannot determine that from a failed reset alone. First consider whether the device is receiving power and whether another accessible GFCI or breaker has interrupted the circuit. If the GFCI’s TEST or RESET function does not work, ESFI advises replacement. Model-specific manufacturer instructions may also call for replacement after a prescribed test fails or a fault indication persists.
A new GFCI can also fail to reset if it is not receiving power or is incorrectly wired. For a replacement, the right amperage, wiring configuration, weather- or tamper-resistant features, and compatibility depend on the installation and applicable local requirements. A 15-amp self-test GFCI receptacle is one product category, not a universal choice for every circuit. Have an electrician confirm what is appropriate when the circuit or requirements are uncertain.

When replacement is appropriate—and when to call an electrician
| Situation | Appropriate next step |
|---|---|
| TEST or RESET does not function, or the exact model’s instructions indicate failure after its prescribed checks | Replace the device with one compatible with the installation, or have an electrician do so. |
| It trips repeatedly, the power source is uncertain, or a wiring or downstream fault is possible | Leave it off and call a qualified electrician for diagnosis. |
| You are unsure how to identify the correct replacement or work safely | Do not open the box; ask an electrician to assess the circuit and device. |
Local electrical requirements vary, and the device’s instructions apply to its specific model. A replacement is not a substitute for finding an unresolved fault.
Sources and scope
This guide draws on OSHA’s explanation of GFCI operation, ESFI consumer safety guidance, and Leviton instructions and troubleshooting information for identified products. They support general safety steps, but they cannot diagnose a particular installation or establish the requirements adopted by a reader’s municipality.
