LG TV error code 109 is best treated as an app or internet-connection problem—not proof that the TV has failed. LG does not publish one universal definition for code 109 across every model and webOS version. In practice, the fault may involve Wi-Fi, the router, DNS, an LG or streaming service, one damaged app, or the TV’s software state.
Work through these three methods in order. Start with the least destructive fix, use a phone hotspot to identify whether your home network is responsible, and leave a factory reset until last.

First, identify the scope of the problem
Before changing settings, check whether error 109 affects one app or several:
- Only one app fails: The app may be outdated, damaged, unsupported, or experiencing a provider-side problem.
- Several apps fail: Prioritize the TV’s network, DNS, router, account, date and time, or connection to LG services.
- The LG Content Store also fails: This points more toward a broader TV-to-LG-services connection problem than one streaming app.
LG notes that apps that freeze, crash, or will not load are often associated with an unstable network connection. Its troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the network status, trying another network, updating or reinstalling the affected app, and resetting the TV only as a last resort. See LG’s official app troubleshooting guide.

Way 1: Restart the TV, modem, and router
A restart can clear a stale TV network session, temporary DHCP or DNS errors, and short-lived router or ISP problems.
- Close the affected app and restart the LG TV normally.
- Check that the modem and router cables are firmly connected.
- Restart the modem and Wi-Fi router using the manufacturer’s normal procedure.
- Wait for the home network to restore internet access.
- Reconnect the TV to Wi-Fi, or disconnect and reconnect its Ethernet cable.
- Open the TV’s network-status screen and retry the app.
Check the network-status chain
On current LG TVs, go to Settings → All Settings → General → Network → Internet Connection, then choose Wi-Fi Connection or the wired connection. Menu labels vary by model year and region.
Recommended Free Tools
LG’s network screen uses four stages:
- TV: The television’s local network connection.
- Gateway: The connection between the TV and router.
- DNS: Whether online service addresses can be resolved.
- Internet: Whether the TV can reach the external internet.
Green connections through all four stages indicate that the TV has not detected a basic network problem. A break at the gateway suggests a TV-to-router problem; a break at DNS suggests name resolution; and a break at internet suggests an external connection or ISP issue.
Way 2: Test a phone hotspot, then change DNS
Part A: Use a hotspot to isolate the fault
- Turn on your phone’s hotspot. On an iPhone, use Settings → Personal Hotspot. Android wording varies, but the feature is generally under Connections → Mobile Hotspot and Tethering.
- On the LG TV, open the network settings and select the phone’s hotspot name.
- Enter the hotspot password.
- Open the app that displayed error 109.
Keep this test brief because streaming can use substantial mobile data, and carrier hotspot limits or charges vary.
- It works on the hotspot: Investigate the home router, ISP, DNS, Wi-Fi interference, or network filtering. The TV itself is less likely to be the problem.
- It fails on the hotspot too: The issue may involve the app, TV software, LG account or service access, or the TV. Continue with Way 3 and contact LG if the problem persists.
This hotspot test is recommended in LG’s app and network troubleshooting instructions.
Part B: Manually change the DNS server
If the network-status screen shows a DNS problem—or the TV works on a hotspot but not on your home network—try a manual DNS server. LG specifically documents Cloudflare’s public DNS addresses, 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1, as options. This is a workaround and diagnostic step, not proof that every error 109 is caused by DNS.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor TVs from 2021 onward running webOS 6.0 or later:
- Press the Settings button.
- Select All Settings → General → Network → Internet Connection.
- Choose Wired Connection (Ethernet) or Wi-Fi Connection.
- For Ethernet, select Edit. For Wi-Fi, select Advanced Wi-Fi Settings.
- Edit the DNS server field and enter
1.1.1.1or1.0.0.1. - Select Connect, then retry the app.
Older menu paths differ:
- 2020 / webOS 5.0: All Settings → Connection → Network Connection Settings
- 2019 / webOS 4.5: All Settings → Connection
- 2018 / webOS 4.0 or earlier: All Settings → Network
If an older TV does not display a DNS edit field, consult its model manual rather than assuming the newer path applies. LG’s DNS instructions cover these version differences. DNS changes are reversible: return the setting to automatic if performance becomes worse or the error returns.

When one app is affected
- Update the affected app.
- Open it again and test.
- If error 109 remains, delete the app.
- Reinstall it from the LG Content Store.
- If only that app still fails, contact the app provider.
App support varies by country, TV model, and webOS version. If an app is missing from the Content Store, that may reflect region, compatibility, model age, or provider availability—not necessarily error 109.
When several apps are affected
Before resetting the TV, repeat the hotspot test, check for a TV software update, confirm the TV is using the intended region and network, retry after changing DNS, and sign out and back into the affected service where the app allows it.
Factory-reset instructions
A reset can clear persistent settings or software-state problems, but it is not guaranteed to fix error 109. It deletes account settings and installed apps, so record passwords and be prepared to set up the TV again.
- 2021 and newer / webOS 6.0 or later: Settings → All Settings → General → System → Reset to Initial Settings
- 2020 / webOS 5.0: Settings → All Settings → Support → Reset to Initial Settings
- 2019 and earlier / webOS 4.5 or earlier: Settings → All Settings → General → Reset to Initial Settings
On 2025 models, select Reset All after choosing Reset to Initial Settings. Follow LG’s on-screen prompts and reconnect the TV to the network before testing the app again.
Use the result to choose the next step
| What happens | Likely direction | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| One app fails while others work | App-specific defect or compatibility issue | Update, delete, and reinstall that app |
| All apps fail on home Wi-Fi but work on hotspot | Router, ISP, DNS, filtering, or Wi-Fi issue | Restart the network, try manual DNS, or contact the ISP/router provider |
| All apps fail on home Wi-Fi and hotspot | App, TV software, account, LG service, or TV-side fault | Update the TV, reset only as a last resort, then contact LG |
| Network screen breaks at DNS | Name-resolution problem | Try a manual DNS server |
| Network screen breaks at gateway | TV-to-router connection problem | Reconnect Wi-Fi or Ethernet and restart the router |
| Reset does not help | Not a simple settings problem | Stop repeating resets and request support or service |
When to contact LG
Contact LG Support or request service when:
- Error 109 persists over both your home network and a phone hotspot.
- Multiple apps remain broken after reinstalling them and resetting the TV.
- The TV cannot connect to any available network.
- The network-status screen repeatedly fails at the TV or gateway stage.
- The same problem occurs across apps and connection types, suggesting a TV-side software or hardware issue.
A failed hotspot test raises suspicion about the TV or its software, but it does not by itself prove a defective motherboard or network adapter. When contacting LG, provide the TV model, webOS version, connection type, affected apps, exact message, and whether changing DNS or resetting the TV made any difference.
Should you replace the TV or use a streaming device?
Do not buy replacement hardware merely because error 109 appeared. First complete the hotspot and app tests. If the TV works on a hotspot, repair the home network or router path. If the TV is old and no longer supports the app, or if its built-in software remains unreliable after diagnosis, an external streaming device may be a practical workaround. That is a compatibility decision, not evidence that error 109 has one universal hardware cause.
