Build a cabinet face frame by drilling pocket holes in the rails and center stiles, then fastening the parts with pocket-hole screws. WOOD Magazine Staff estimates that a joint takes about 90 seconds with a store-bought jig; that is a per-joint editorial estimate, not a five-minute guarantee for an entire frame.
What you need
- A pocket-hole jig and drill with a bit and stop collar suited to the jig.
- Rails and stiles cut to the dimensions required for your cabinet.
- Pocket-hole screws selected for the stock material.
- Clamps to hold the parts firmly during assembly.
- Matching scrap for checking the drill setup before working on the frame parts.
Drill the pocket holes
- Mark the inside faces. Identify the inside face of each frame part before drilling so the pockets end up on the concealed side.
- Set the jig and bit. Center and clamp the jig on the workpiece. Set the drill-bit stop collar for both the workpiece thickness and the jig type.
- Test the setup. Drill matching-thickness scrap and check the result before drilling the frame pieces.
- Drill the joints. Make paired pocket holes at the ends of the rails and center stiles, following the jig’s setup for the stock.
Reduce drill torque to help avoid breaking material near a pocket. Follow the jig manufacturer’s setup guidance if it differs by model.
Choose screws for the material

| Composites such as MDF or particleboard | Coarse thread |
Use screws designed for pocket-hole joints. Flathead and drywall screws are not the recommended substitutes for this method.
Assemble the frame without shifting the parts
- Butt each mating pair of parts together in the intended frame position.
- Clamp the joint solidly, holding the parts against the workbench and aligned with one another.
- Drive the pocket-hole screws while maintaining firm clamping pressure.
The screw can push the parts apart as it tightens. A firm clamp helps prevent the joint from separating or slipping out of alignment.

Decide whether to conceal the pocket holes
First check whether the cabinet case edges will cover the holes; if so, added plugs may not be necessary. If a hole remains visible, choose a cover that suits the material and finish.

- Wood: Use a precut plug or a dowel of the same wood species. After the glue dries, trim the excess and hand-sand the surface flush.
- Melamine-coated particleboard: Use molded plugs intended for that material.
