A beginner class can provide the machine, tools and wood, while supervised practice helps you learn safe habits and discover what kind of turning you want to do. Put a full-face shield at the top of your personal purchase list; choose turning tools after you have tried the basic cuts.
Should I buy a lathe or take a class first?
For most beginners, instruction is the more useful first step. The American Association of Woodturners (AAW) recommends seeking a local chapter, class or mentor where available. It notes that learning alone can be difficult: an instructor can help you practice safely and see which tools and techniques suit different cuts.
A class may also save you from buying equipment before you know what you need. AAW says beginner classes supply the lathe and tools. Before enrolling, ask:
- What safety equipment must I bring, and what is provided?
- How many students will each instructor be supervising?
- What project or skills will the class cover?
- Are tools and wood included?
If you cannot find a class, contact a nearby AAW chapter, craft school or makerspace to ask about instruction or mentorship. Books and videos can help you prepare, but AAW describes them as a supplement rather than a substitute for hands-on instruction.

What safety gear do I need for woodturning?
Buy a full-face shield before a lathe or a broad tool set. AAW recommends wearing one whenever the lathe is running, with protection that covers the lower face and jaw. Safety glasses alone are for work away from a running lathe, not a replacement for a face shield at the machine.
For wood dust, use a suitable mask or respirator along with dust collection and good ventilation. Sanding can produce especially harmful dust. Tie back long hair, and keep gloves, loose clothing, jewelry and dangling items away from rotating parts.

- Benefits of Carbide Lathe Tools: Simple to use for all skill levels making woodturning fast and more enjoyable. You can focus on your project and not on techniques or sharpening. No long learning curve or expensive sharpening equipment. You can begin turning as soon as your box arrives because each tool comes with a very sharp, rotatable carbide cutter. Just rotate the cutter head ¼ turn for a clean, sharp edge and you are back to turning wood.
- Handle Details: The most beautiful lathe tool handle on the market, 100% USA made by American craftsman. CNC machined from solid aircraft aluminum for balance, durability, and to last for years. Overall length is 8"; outside diameter is 1 3/16"; tool opening is 1/2" diameter. If needed, tools can be easily changed by loosening the two stainless steel set screws.
- Simple Start Tool Details: CNC machined from 3/8” square stainless steel, making them stronger, stiffer and less likely to roll than round shaft tools. These professional tools feature an overall length of 6.5".
- Tool Use: The Simple Start Turner & Hollower is ideal for turning small pens, tops, bottle stoppers, etc. The Simple Start Rougher carbide tool makes roughing much simpler & less physical as most of the shock created by interrupted cuts is absorbed in the tool rest instead of your hands & arms. The Simple Start 55 Detailer carbide tool is perfect for cutting small details or a dovetail tennon. It can also be used as a parting tool.
- Tool Engraving: Each Simple Woodturning Tool is engraved so you know exactly what tool you have. That makes finding replacement cutters very simple! SSTH = Simple Start Turner and Hollower. SSR = Simple Start Rougher. SS55D = Simple Start 55° Detailer
Before switching on
- Secure the blank and tighten the tool-rest and other machine locks.
- Remove chuck keys and wrenches.
- Turn the mounted work by hand to check clearance.
- Check the speed setting and stand outside the line of fire—the “red zone”—when starting.
While turning
- Keep the tool on the tool rest before it touches the wood.
- Start slowly, especially while the work is not yet balanced; do not copy the speeds or techniques of experienced turners.
- Slow down or stop if the lathe shakes, the work vibrates or you hear an unusual sound. Investigate before continuing.
AAW’s suggested spindle-speed guide relates stock diameter to speed: 1 inch or less, 3,000 rpm; 1.5 inches, 2,500 rpm; 2 inches, 2,000 rpm; and 3 inches, 1,500 rpm. These are guide values, not a guarantee that a particular blank is safe at that speed. Start slowly and account for balance and condition. For practice, choose sound wood; inspect it for cracks and splits, and avoid knots, bark inclusions and irregular shapes as a beginner.
What tools do I need to start woodturning?
Start with the tools needed for the kind of work you want to make, rather than buying a set on the assumption that every tool is useful for every project. Learn to round a square blank, then repeat foundational forms such as beads and coves. AAW emphasizes repeated practice of essential elements as central to learning woodturning.

Two common gouges illustrate why the intended work matters:
| Tool | Typical role | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Roughing gouge | Brings spindle stock toward round. | Useful for work between centers; it is not a universal tool for every turning task. |
| Bowl gouge | Used mainly for end-grain work, such as bowl turning. | Choose it for the work and technique you are learning, not simply because it appears in a set. |
Traditional high-speed-steel (HSS) tools and carbide-tipped tools involve different learning and sharpening considerations. Traditional tools require sharpening practice; carbide tools use replaceable tips and offer a different experience. Neither category is automatically best for every beginner. Ask an instructor to help match tools to spindle or bowl turning and to show you how to use and maintain them.

Yes—as a supplement to practice. AAW’s Getting Started in Woodturning covers first-lathe selection and alignment, safety, sharpening, tool use and skill-building projects. The 2021 AAW listing described it as a 224-page book with 18 projects and gave a U.S. list price of $27.95 at that time; that historical price is not a current-price claim.
