The best small dehumidifier for a closet depends on what is causing the dampness and whether the space has enough airflow for the device. First measure relative humidity and check for leaks; for an enclosed closet, a rechargeable desiccant unit may be a compact fit. Use a powered mini dehumidifier only if its exact-model manual permits the placement and the appliance can circulate air safely.
Start by measuring humidity and checking for moisture sources
A musty smell can signal a moisture problem, but it does not tell you the closet’s relative humidity (RH). Put a hygrometer near the area you want to assess and take readings over time. ENERGY STAR says the optimum RH for a building is generally 30%–50%; that is broad building guidance, not a closet-specific target. ENERGY STAR’s dehumidifier guidance recommends a separate hygrometer when a unit does not provide a useful RH display.
Before buying a dehumidifier, look for a plumbing or roof leak, damp exterior wall, condensation, or another source of moisture. A dehumidifier can remove moisture from air, but it does not repair a leak or address the underlying cause. Improving circulation—such as leaving the door open when practical—may also help a stagnant closet.
Humidity readings are not exact to a single percentage point. Honeywell notes that a built-in humidistat and a nearby separate hygrometer may differ by roughly 5–8 percentage points. Keep the sensor near the closet area being assessed and use readings as a guide rather than treating a small difference as definitive. Choose between a rechargeable desiccant unit and a powered dehumidifier
These options remove moisture in different ways. Honeywell describes compressor dehumidifiers as condensing moisture on a cooled coil, while desiccant models use moisture-absorbing material such as silica gel. A rechargeable desiccant unit avoids the need to run a powered compressor continuously, but it must be recharged according to its instructions. A powered compact appliance collects water in a tank and requires suitable power, airflow, and maintenance.

For either type, compare the actual closet volume and conditions with the manufacturer’s stated coverage or capacity. A coverage figure is not a guarantee of results in a particular closet. ENERGY STAR’s room-capacity guidance is for rooms, including small-to-medium rooms under 2,000 square feet; it does not establish a suitable capacity for a small, enclosed closet. Check airflow and exact-model placement rules
A closet can restrict the airflow a powered appliance needs. ENERGY STAR advises allowing air to circulate around units that do not discharge air from the top, while also following the manufacturer’s safety instructions. One Commercial Cool portable-dehumidifier manual specifically warns against operating that model in a closed area such as inside a closet. That warning applies to that model, not every dehumidifier. - Do not assume a closet is suitable just because a product page mentions closets.
- Consider whether the door can remain open or the closet has adequate ventilation.
- Account for noise and heat from a powered unit, as well as access to its tank and outlet.
Compare maintenance, temperature, and electrical safety
A tank-based unit needs regular emptying; a desiccant model needs recharging. ENERGY STAR discusses buckets and automatic shutoff as practical features. Honeywell advises emptying condensation water weekly and not leaving water in the tank for long periods; follow the instructions for the applicable model. Honeywell’s support guidance gives an operating range of 41°F (5°C) to 89°F (32°C) for its portable units only, so do not apply that range to other brands.
ENERGY STAR advises using a properly grounded outlet, observing electrical-safety warnings, and keeping water drainage or disposal away from electrical circuits and devices. Its page also reports that ENERGY STAR-certified dehumidifiers use 20% less energy than similarly sized conventional models; that comparison applies to certified dehumidifiers generally, not specifically to either closet product listed above.
