Figure’s 2025 Home “Alpha Test”: What the Humanoid Robot Announcement Actually Meant

Figure’s 2025 home-alpha announcement was an early testing plan—not a consumer launch. Later demonstrations show continued progress, but no broad residential alpha program has been publicly verified.

Figure did not announce a consumer robot launch. On February 27, 2025, CEO Brett Adcock told TechCrunch that Figure planned to begin “alpha testing” its Figure 02 humanoid robot in homes later that year. That meant an early, limited development trial—not a retail release, public beta, or promise that homeowners could order a robot.

Later demonstrations show Figure continuing to develop household capabilities, but the public record does not verify that a broad residential alpha program actually took place in 2025.

The short answer

Figure’s announcement described a roadmap milestone. The company believed its Helix artificial-intelligence system had advanced far enough to test a humanoid robot in less controlled domestic environments.

  • Announced: planned home “alpha testing” of the Figure 02 later in 2025.
  • Not announced: a retail product, consumer price, order process, delivery schedule, or public enrollment program.
  • Later evidence: Figure published demonstrations involving dishwashers, room tidying, bedroom organization, and navigation.
  • Still unverified publicly: the number of homes, participants, dates, autonomy level, safety results, and outcome of any 2025 residential alpha cohort.

The most accurate description is therefore: Figure announced plans to begin early home testing, then continued developing and demonstrating home-oriented robot capabilities.

What Figure announced on February 27, 2025

In a February 27, 2025 report, TechCrunch quoted Figure CEO Brett Adcock saying the company intended to start “alpha testing” its Figure 02 humanoid robot in homes later that year.

The announcement followed Figure’s February 20 launch of Helix, the company’s in-house vision-language-action model. Figure presented Helix as software that connects what a robot sees, what a person says, and how the robot moves.

The information came through an interview and report. Figure did not publish a detailed residential testing plan with the announcement. It did not disclose:

  • how many homes would participate;
  • whether participants would be employees, partners, or ordinary customers;
  • where the homes would be located;
  • which tasks the robots would perform;
  • whether a human operator would supervise or intervene;
  • how many hours the robots would operate;
  • the safety procedures, insurance arrangements, or incident-reporting process; or
  • whether participants would be paid, charged, or required to provide data.

What “alpha testing” means

In software and robotics, alpha normally refers to an early development stage used to expose fundamental failures before a system is ready for a wider public test. It is not a formal testing standard, and Figure did not publish its internal definition of the term.

In practical terms, an alpha home trial would likely involve limited access, selected tasks, close monitoring, frequent software updates, and a substantial possibility of failure. A robot might drop objects, lose track of a task, require a reset, or need human assistance.

That is very different from a consumer product. A homeowner buying a finished appliance expects predictable operation, safety documentation, support, warranty coverage, and a clear remedy when something goes wrong. An alpha participant is more likely to be helping a company discover what still breaks.

Why Helix mattered

Traditional robots are often programmed for narrowly defined environments and repeatable motions. A generalist vision-language-action model aims to make the connection between perception, instructions, and movement more flexible.

Figure said Helix could:

  • interpret natural-language instructions;
  • control a robot’s upper body continuously;
  • pick up unfamiliar small household objects;
  • interact with drawers, refrigerators, groceries, and other items; and
  • coordinate two robots on a shared task.

Figure’s Helix announcement included demonstrations of object handling, grocery-related tasks, and household manipulation. Figure also described Helix applications in logistics, including package manipulation and triage. In June 2025, the company reported an average handling time of 4.05 seconds per package and barcode success above 92% in its stated test setup through its logistics scaling work.

Those results are relevant because they show the direction of the technology, but they do not prove that Helix could reliably run a household. A model that can generalize across objects is not automatically capable of making safe decisions in every room, around every person, for every possible instruction.

What the demonstrations show—and what they do not

Figure later published increasingly ambitious demonstrations involving domestic environments:

  • dishwasher loading and unloading;
  • navigation through cluttered spaces;
  • living-room tidying;
  • bedroom organization;
  • moving and sorting household objects; and
  • natural-language instructions across multiple tasks.

In January 2026, Figure introduced Helix 02 and described a continuous four-minute dishwasher task involving 61 loco-manipulation actions. The company explicitly described that demonstration as autonomous. Figure later published a Helix 02 living-room tidying demonstration and a two-robot bedroom-reset demonstration, which it said completed the task in under two minutes.

These are evidence that Figure has built systems capable of performing selected household tasks under the conditions shown. They are not the same as statistically validated performance across ordinary homes. A video does not establish how often the robot succeeds, how it handles interruptions, whether a remote operator is available, or what happens after an unexpected failure.

Was the 2025 robot autonomous?

The original home-alpha report did not provide enough information to establish the exact autonomy level planned for those tests. Later Figure announcements use “autonomous” for specific Helix 02 demonstrations, including the dishwasher sequence. That claim should be tied to those demonstrations rather than generalized to every 2025 home test or every Figure robot.

Helix is also software and control technology, while Figure 02 and Figure 03 are different hardware generations. A Helix demonstration does not mean every Figure robot has identical sensors, actuators, balance, reach, battery life, or task capability.

Why homes are harder than factories

A factory is not easy for a robot, but it is usually designed to make automation possible. Work areas can be restricted, objects can be standardized, routes can be marked, and tasks can be measured.

A home changes constantly. Important complications include:

  • Layout variation: rooms, furniture, doorways, floors, and lighting differ from one home to another.
  • Clutter: bags, boxes, toys, laundry, and furniture can block routes or hide objects.
  • Soft objects: towels, clothes, bedding, and pillows deform and are difficult to grasp consistently.
  • Fragile objects: glassware, ceramics, electronics, and medication demand accurate recognition and force control.
  • Stairs and surfaces: uneven, wet, slippery, or unfamiliar floors create balance and traction problems.
  • People: residents, guests, children, and contractors move unpredictably and occupy the same spaces.
  • Pets: animals may move underfoot, react to the robot, or interfere with its hands.
  • Ambiguous instructions: “clean the kitchen” requires decisions about priorities, ownership, disposal, and what must not be moved.
  • Recovery: a useful robot must do more than stop. It must recover from a dropped object, a closed door, a blocked path, or a failed grasp.

TechCrunch specifically identified changing layouts, mess, uneven lighting, floors, stairs, pets, and children as obstacles to household deployment.

Safety, privacy, and liability are part of the product

A home humanoid is not merely a taller smart appliance. It can move through occupied rooms, apply force, carry objects, and potentially interact with hot, sharp, heavy, or hazardous items.

A serious home trial would need clear answers to questions such as:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • What happens when a person reaches near the robot’s hands?
  • Does the robot stop when a child or pet enters its path?
  • Can it safely handle knives, hot liquids, medication, chemicals, or glass?
  • What does it do when it loses visual contact with an object?
  • Can it operate safely if the network fails or its battery is low?
  • Is a remote operator available, and how quickly can that person intervene?
  • Who pays if the robot damages property or injures someone?
  • Where are camera and microphone recordings stored?
  • How long is household data retained, and is it used to train future models?

Figure’s later Project Go-Big announcement connected residential environments, navigation, data collection, and model training. That makes privacy and data governance central questions, not side issues.

Why Figure started with industrial environments

Figure’s industrial work provides important context. Factories offer a more controlled proving ground than private homes:

  • tasks are repetitive and measurable;
  • work zones can be restricted;
  • objects and routes are more predictable;
  • safety procedures can be standardized; and
  • commercial customers may justify an expensive pilot.

Figure announced a BMW pilot in South Carolina in early 2024. In its November 2025 account of the BMW deployment, Figure reported that F.02 operated on 10-hour weekday shifts, loaded more than 90,000 parts, ran for more than 1,250 hours, and contributed to production of more than 30,000 BMW X3 vehicles.

Those figures are Figure’s own reported results, not independently audited performance figures. They nevertheless illustrate why factories are a logical first market: the robot can be assigned a defined workflow and evaluated against production metrics.

Figure said it was beginning to retire F.02 after the BMW deployment as newer hardware became available. That makes the 2025 home announcement more useful as a snapshot of Figure’s development roadmap than as evidence of a finished household product.

Figure 02 versus Figure 03

Figure’s product positioning changed after the original announcement. On its current company page, Figure describes F.02 as the workforce-focused generation and F.03 as reimagined for home use.

That distinction matters. The robot named in the February 2025 home-testing report was Figure 02. Figure’s later home-oriented strategy is associated more clearly with Figure 03 and newer Helix systems.

Home-oriented does not mean consumer-available. Figure reported that F.03 arrived at BMW in June 2026, showing that a generation designed with household use in mind can also be used in industrial development. “For the home” describes a design direction, not proof of a retail launch.

Confirmed: Figure subsequently published home-related demonstrations and continued developing Helix and newer robot hardware.

Not publicly verified in the sources reviewed: the size of a 2025 residential cohort, its participants, operating dates, supervision model, safety incidents, task-completion rates, or a formal public results report.

The absence of a public results report does not prove that no home testing occurred. It means the available evidence supports a claim about an announced plan and later development—not a claim that Figure completed a broad, public, consumer-facing alpha program.

What a household robot might realistically do first

Early home robots are more likely to be useful for bounded, repetitive tasks than for general household judgment. Plausible early capabilities include:

  • picking up and sorting selected objects;
  • moving groceries or packages;
  • loading or unloading a dishwasher;
  • tidying a room;
  • folding some types of laundry;
  • navigating between rooms;
  • responding to simple voice instructions; and
  • performing repetitive manipulation while supervised.

Figure has demonstrated categories of these tasks, but demonstrations do not guarantee consumer performance. A robot may work well when objects are visible, routes are clear, lighting is favorable, and the task has been selected in advance. Everyday use adds interruptions, ambiguous requests, unusual objects, and safety-sensitive edge cases.

Consumers should not infer from the demonstrations that a Figure robot is ready for reliable cooking, childcare, medical assistance, medication handling, knives, hot surfaces, dangerous chemicals, or fully unsupervised operation. Figure has not disclosed a public consumer price, retail channel, household subscription, service plan, reservation process, or mass-market delivery schedule in the cited sources.

The evidence ladder

The announcement is easiest to understand by separating different levels of evidence:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. CEO statement: Figure planned to begin home alpha testing.
  2. Company demonstrations: Figure showed selected domestic tasks involving Helix and later Helix 02 systems.
  3. Industrial deployment: Figure reported sustained F.02 operation at BMW, a more structured environment.
  4. Missing evidence: there is no reviewed public, independent, long-duration record of unsupervised performance in ordinary occupied homes.
  5. Current status: F.03 and Helix 02 show continued home-oriented development, but not the arrival of a generally available household robot.

What the announcement means now

Figure’s February 2025 statement was significant because it showed the company believed its software and hardware were ready to leave highly structured industrial settings and confront the variability of domestic spaces.

But “home alpha testing” and “home availability” are completely different milestones. The first asks whether a robot can begin learning from real household conditions. The second requires dependable performance, safety validation, privacy rules, insurance, maintenance, customer support, pricing, and a clear way for ordinary buyers to obtain and use the machine.

As of the public record reviewed through August 18, 2026, Figure had demonstrated meaningful progress toward home use while still leaving those consumer questions unanswered.
