A good fence gate does more than fill an opening. It controls access, protects privacy, handles daily use, and makes the fence look intentional from the street or yard. The best gate idea for your home depends on the opening width, fence material, slope, security needs, local code, and how often the gate will be used.

For 2026 budgeting, a simple pedestrian fence gate commonly falls around $200 to $1,500 or more installed, depending on material, hardware, posts, and whether it is part of a new fence or a retrofit. Driveway and security gates are a different category: HomeAdvisor reports average security gate installation around $2,346, while HomeGuide places many automatic driveway or security gates around $1,200 to $8,500, with an average near $4,000 and premium systems reaching $12,000 or more.

On our job sites, the gates that last are usually not the fanciest ones. They are the ones with the right post size, the right hinges, enough ground clearance, clean drainage around the posts, and framing that resists sag. Use the ideas below as design inspiration, but pair each one with the practical notes before you build.

Quick Comparison: Best Fence Gate Ideas by Use

Use Case Best Gate Ideas Typical Cost Tier Builder’s Caution
Maximum privacy Board-and-batten, vinyl privacy, hidden flush, minimalist slab Medium to high Heavy solid gates need stronger posts and anti-sag framing.
Modern curb appeal Horizontal slat, aluminum slat, steel-and-wood hybrid, laser-cut metal Medium to premium Watch slat spacing, wind load, latch alignment, and local fence rules.
Garden access Picket, arched wood, hog-wire, arbor gate, raised planter entry Low to medium Plan a clear opening of at least 36 inches for tools and wheelbarrows.
Pool barrier Self-closing aluminum, ornamental metal, vinyl pool gate Medium to high Use code-rated hinges and latches before inspection, not after.
Pets Pet-secure gate, split-rail with mesh, shadowbox, chain-link Low to medium Check bottom gaps, latch height, and digging clearance.
Driveway access Manual swing, double swing, rolling, sliding, cantilever, automated gate High to premium Slope, swing radius, electrical trenching, and safety devices drive cost.

Privacy Fence Gate Ideas

1. Board-and-Batten Privacy Gate

A board-and-batten gate is one of the strongest-looking options for a full privacy fence. Vertical boards create the solid field, while battens cover the seams and add depth. It works well with cedar, treated pine, or painted exterior lumber.

Best for: backyard privacy and side-yard entries. Cost tier: medium. Build note: a 36-inch pedestrian version is manageable, but wider wood versions should use a diagonal brace, metal frame, or adjustable anti-sag kit.

2. Framed Cedar Gate

Cedar is a strong choice when you want natural warmth without the weight of some hardwoods. A clean perimeter frame with tongue-and-groove or tight vertical infill looks finished from both sides.

Use stainless steel or exterior-rated coated fasteners, and seal cut ends before assembly where possible. Cedar still needs maintenance: expect to clean and reseal every 2 to 4 years depending on sun, rain, and finish color.

3. Shadowbox Gate

A shadowbox gate alternates boards on each side of the frame. It gives partial privacy while letting wind pass through better than a fully solid panel.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best for windy yards or neighbor-facing fences. The tradeoff is weight. Even though the airflow is better, the gate has boards on both sides, so use heavy-duty hinges and posts that are set plumb in solid concrete footings.

4. Vinyl Privacy Gate

Vinyl privacy gates are popular because they do not need staining or painting. They pair well with white, tan, gray, or coastal-style vinyl fence systems.

Best for: low-maintenance yards. Cost tier: medium. Caution: vinyl expands and contracts, and wider gates can rack if the internal reinforcement is weak. Use the manufacturer’s gate kit and metal inserts when specified.

5. Composite Gate

Composite gates offer a cleaner, more stable alternative to wood in wet or high-maintenance climates. They are heavier than many homeowners expect, so the frame matters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best for: long-term durability with a wood-like appearance. Cost tier: high. Build note: confirm hinge weight ratings and avoid hanging a heavy composite gate from undersized 4×4 posts on wide openings.

6. Hidden or Flush Gate

A hidden gate continues the same picket, slat, or panel pattern across the opening so the gate nearly disappears. It is a good fit for modern privacy walls and side yards where the gate should not call attention to itself.

The key is precision. Keep the reveal lines even, use concealed or color-matched hinges where practical, and leave enough clearance so the gate does not bind after seasonal movement.

7. Minimalist Slab Gate

A slab-style gate uses a flat, simple face with few visible trim pieces. It can be built from smooth wood panels, composite boards, metal skin, or a framed panel system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best for: modern homes and privacy courtyards. Caution: large flat surfaces catch wind. For a tall slab gate, especially 6 feet or higher, the posts and hinges need to be sized like structural components, not decorative hardware.

Classic and Garden Gate Ideas

8. Classic Picket Gate

A picket gate is still one of the best front-yard choices when you want charm without blocking the house. Standard pedestrian widths are often 36 to 42 inches, with 36 inches being a practical minimum for most everyday access.

Best for: front walks, cottage gardens, and low fences. Cost tier: low to medium. Maintenance depends on material: painted wood needs touch-ups, while vinyl or aluminum versions need less work.

9. Arched Wood Gate

An arched top softens a straight fence line and makes a small garden entry feel intentional. Cedar and redwood are common choices, but treated pine can work when properly sealed and painted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build note: the arch should be part of a rigid frame, not just thin trim attached to the top. Thin decorative arches tend to twist, split, or separate over time.

10. Curved-Top Gate

A curved-top gate is a subtler version of the arched gate. It works well when the fence panels are flat but the entry needs a small visual lift.

Best for: transitional homes, side gardens, and backyard entries. Keep the latch side square and plumb. The curve should not interfere with hinge placement or the strength of the top rail.

11. Lattice-Top Gate

A lattice-top gate gives partial screening without feeling closed in. It pairs well with privacy fences that have lattice caps or garden fences with climbing plants.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Caution: lattice is not structural. The gate still needs a proper frame underneath. If vines will grow on it, account for added weight and moisture retention.

12. Hog-Wire Garden Gate

Hog-wire panels framed in wood or metal are excellent for vegetable gardens because they keep animals out while preserving visibility. They also handle wind better than solid gates.

Best for: gardens, orchards, and informal rear-yard fencing. Use galvanized or powder-coated panels, and keep the bottom gap small enough to discourage pets or rabbits.

13. Raised Planter Gate Entry

A gate flanked by raised planters creates a defined garden threshold. It works especially well for compact yards where every foot needs to do more than one job.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build note: do not attach the gate hinges to planter walls unless the structure is designed for it. Gate loads belong on dedicated posts set below frost depth where required locally.

14. Arbor or Pergola Gate

An arbor gate adds overhead structure and makes a garden entry feel complete. It can be simple 4×4 posts with a light trellis top or a heavier pergola-style frame.

Best for: garden paths and backyard transitions. Cost tier: medium to high. Keep climbing plants away from hinges and latches so the gate remains easy to operate.

15. Japanese-Inspired Garden Gate

A Japanese-inspired gate uses calm proportions, exposed wood, dark hardware, and a simple roof or lintel detail. It is less about ornament and more about balance.

Best for: quiet garden entries. Use rot-resistant wood, protect horizontal surfaces from standing water, and avoid oversized hardware that disrupts the clean lines.

Modern Fence Gate Ideas

16. Modern Horizontal Slat Gate

Horizontal slat gates are popular because they look clean and architectural. Cedar, redwood, composite, steel, and aluminum can all work, but the engineering matters more than the photo.

Long horizontal boards can sag or bow if the frame is weak. For wide gates, we prefer a welded steel or aluminum frame with the slats attached as infill. Check spacing for privacy, child safety, and pool rules if the gate is near a pool.

17. Contemporary Aluminum Slat Gate

Aluminum slat gates give the modern look with less maintenance than wood. Powder-coated finishes in black, bronze, white, or gray are common.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best for: low-maintenance modern yards. Cost tier: medium to high. Caution: aluminum is lighter than steel but still needs a square, properly anchored post system to keep the latch aligned.

18. Black Metal Frame Gate

A black metal frame can make a wood gate stronger and sharper. The frame controls sag while the wood provides warmth and privacy.

Best for: horizontal cedar, composite infill, or wide privacy gates. This is one of the most practical upgrades for gates over 42 inches wide or gates that get daily use.

19. Steel-and-Wood Hybrid Gate

A steel-and-wood hybrid gate combines welded steel rails with cedar, redwood, or composite boards. It works for both pedestrian and driveway openings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cost tier: high. Build note: isolate dissimilar materials where needed, prefinish boards when possible, and leave controlled gaps for drainage and expansion.

20. Laser-Cut Metal Panel Gate

Laser-cut panels can be geometric, botanical, coastal, or custom-branded. They provide a premium look for courtyards and front entries.

Caution: dense patterns can behave like a solid panel in wind. Ask the fabricator about panel thickness, frame design, powder coating, and mounting tabs before ordering.

21. Mixed Masonry-and-Metal Gate

A metal gate between masonry columns can look substantial and permanent. This works well for front entries, courtyards, and driveway approaches.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build note: masonry columns must be built or reinforced to handle gate loads. A decorative column without a structural steel core may not be suitable for a heavy swinging gate.

22. Gate with Integrated Lighting

Integrated lighting improves safety and makes the entry easier to use after dark. Options include low-voltage post lights, under-cap lighting, step lights, or downlights mounted to an arbor.

Best for: front entries, side yards, and driveway gates. Plan wiring before posts and hardscape are finished. Retrofitting electrical later often costs more than doing it during the gate build.

Driveway and Security Gate Ideas

23. Manual Swing Driveway Gate

A manual swing gate is the simplest driveway option. It can be wood, steel, aluminum, or a hybrid design, and it usually costs less than an automated system.

3-1/2 Inch Self Closing Gate Hinges, Spring T Hinges, Black, 4 Pack
  • 3.5 Inch extra heavy gate hinges made from steel, sturdiness, durable, black anti-rust coating finish, withstand harsh weather conditions and resistant rust,long-lasting use
  • 3.5 in spring hinges allow the gate to close automatically and the spring tension can be adjusted. Maximum swing angle up to 270 degrees. Up to 60 LBS per hinge workload limit helps prevent gate sag
  • The spring gate hinges unique bearing design with silent gaskets eliminates metal-to-metal contact, reduces wear and extends life. Offset screw holes are for extra strength while also prevent wood from splitting
  • The gate t hinge can be used for right handed or left handed applications for full or half surface installations.such aswooden fence gate, barn doors, storage bins, garden door, farms, backyard, deck, shed
  • 3.5" gate hinges heavy duty come with installation instructions and free mounting hardware so installation is quick and easy

Best for: driveways with enough flat swing area. Caution: the gate needs room to open fully without hitting the grade, landscaping, parked cars, or public sidewalk.

24. Double Driveway Gate

Double gates reduce the length and weight of each leaf, which helps with wide driveway openings. A common layout uses one active leaf and one fixed leaf held by a cane bolt or drop rod.

Include a center stop and a firm landing point for the drop rod. On gravel or soil, that may mean a small concrete receiver so the fixed leaf does not drift over time.

25. Rolling Driveway Gate

A rolling gate moves on wheels along a track. It is useful when there is not enough room for swing leaves.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best for: level driveways with clean pavement. Maintenance is the tradeoff. Tracks collect leaves, ice, gravel, and dirt, so they need periodic cleaning.

26. Sliding Driveway Gate

A sliding gate moves parallel to the fence line and can be manual or automated. It needs enough side room for the full gate leaf to open.

Best for: narrow driveways or entries near a road. Check the side clearance carefully; a 12-foot opening may need roughly 12 feet or more of clear run beside it.

27. Cantilever Gate

A cantilever gate slides without a ground track across the driveway opening. It is often used for commercial, rural, or higher-security residential entries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cost tier: high to premium. It needs more side space than a standard sliding gate because of the counterbalance section, but it performs better where snow, gravel, or uneven surfaces would interfere with a track.

28. Privacy Gate with keypad

A keypad adds controlled access for family, guests, service providers, or rental properties. It can be paired with pedestrian or driveway gates.

Plan the power source, weatherproof housing, emergency release, and code management. For many homeowners, the hardware is not the costly part; electrical work, trenching, and troubleshooting are.

29. Security Gate with intercom

An intercom gate is useful for long driveways, gated courtyards, and homes where deliveries or guests need screening. Systems may include audio, video, app access, cameras, and vehicle detection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

HomeGuide reports many automatic security gate installations around $1,200 to $8,500, with high-end custom systems reaching $12,000 or more. Budget for the gate, operator, safety sensors, access controls, wiring, posts, and permits.

Side-Yard, Utility, and Pet Gate Ideas

30. Pedestrian Side-Yard Gate

The side-yard gate is often the hardest-working gate on the property. It handles trash carts, hoses, mowers, bikes, deliveries, and contractor access.

We usually treat 36 inches as a smarter default than a narrow decorative opening. Trash carts are often around 24 to 30 inches wide, and many mowers need more room than homeowners expect.

31. Trash Enclosure Gate

A trash enclosure gate hides bins while keeping them easy to roll out. Double doors are useful when the enclosure holds two or three carts.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best for: side yards and alley-facing homes. Use durable hinges, a positive latch, and enough bottom clearance for uneven pavement. Avoid tiny openings that require dragging bins sideways.

32. Utility-Access Gate

Utility gates serve meters, pool equipment, HVAC units, septic areas, and service panels. The goal is reliable access, not decoration.

Check required working clearances around equipment before building. A beautiful gate that blocks a technician from reaching a disconnect, meter, or cleanout creates real problems later.

33. Pet-Secure Gate

A pet-secure gate focuses on bottom gaps, latch reliability, and picket spacing. For small dogs, the gap under the gate can matter more than the height.

  • EASY INSTALLATION: All mounting hardware included with this gate kit for wooden fence installations, featuring black plated steel construction and comprehensive instructions for straightforward setup and maintenance-free operation.

34. Chain-Link Gate

Chain-link gates are practical, affordable, and easy to repair. They work well for utility areas, dog runs, alleys, and service yards.

Cost tier: low. Caution: chain-link gates still need properly tensioned fabric, secure latch hardware, and posts sized for the opening. A weak terminal post will lean over time.

35. Split-Rail Gate with Mesh

A split-rail gate with welded wire or mesh keeps the rustic look while containing pets or discouraging wildlife. It works well on larger lots and rural properties.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best for: ranch-style homes, gardens, and informal property lines. Use galvanized mesh and fasteners rated for exterior use.

Rustic, Farmhouse, and Traditional Gate Ideas

36. Rustic Ranch Gate

A ranch gate can be as simple as a metal tube gate or as custom as a timber-framed entry. It is built for wider openings, equipment access, and a casual rural look.

Best for: acreage, long driveways, and farm-style properties. Caution: wide single-leaf ranch gates need serious hinge posts and bracing.

37. Welded-Wire Farm Gate

A welded-wire farm gate is durable, transparent, and practical. It is one of the better budget choices when privacy is not the goal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use it for garden zones, livestock-style fencing, or rear utility areas. Add a child-safe latch or lock if it controls access to hazards, animals, or equipment.

38. Farmhouse X-Brace Gate

The X-brace gate is a classic because it looks good and resists racking when built correctly. It pairs well with board fences, garden fences, and farmhouse-style homes.

Build note: the bracing should transfer load properly into the hinge side. Decorative X trim over a weak frame will not stop sag.

39. Stained Cedar Gate

A stained cedar gate highlights the wood grain while fitting a wide range of home styles. Darker stains feel more modern; natural and semi-transparent stains feel warmer and more traditional.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Maintenance level: medium. Expect more frequent upkeep on sun-facing gates. Seal the top and bottom edges carefully because exposed end grain absorbs moisture fast.

40. Courtyard Gate

A courtyard gate creates a transition from public to private space. It can be wood, iron, aluminum, or a mixed-material design.

Best for: front patios, garden courtyards, and entry walls. If security matters, use a real lockset, not just a decorative latch.

41. Ornamental Iron Gate

Ornamental iron has a formal, long-lasting look and works well with masonry, stucco, brick, and traditional homes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cost tier: medium to premium. Maintenance depends on finish quality. Watch for rust at welds, scratches, and lower rails where water sits.

42. Aluminum Picket Gate

Aluminum picket gates mimic ornamental metal with less rust concern and lower weight. They are common for front yards, pool barriers, and decorative fencing.

Best for: low-maintenance metal fencing. Use powder-coated products from a reputable system so replacement hinges, caps, and latch parts remain available.

43. Low Front-Yard Accent Gate

A low accent gate defines the walkway without turning the front yard into a fortress. It works with picket, aluminum, low masonry, or decorative wood fencing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best for: curb appeal and light boundary definition. Check local height limits before building; many cities regulate front-yard fence and wall height more tightly than backyard height.

Costs, Permits, and Build Details People Miss

Fence gate pricing changes fast because the gate is where structure, finish, access, and hardware all meet. Whole-fence context matters too. HomeAdvisor reports a 2026 national average fence installation cost of $3,275, with a normal range of $1,860 to $4,841. Thumbtack reports a national average range of $1,435 to $4,985, with many projects around $2,717. NerdWallet frames new fence projects broadly at about $500 to more than $10,000 depending on material and add-ons.

For one walk gate, a practical installed budget is often $200 to $1,500 or more. A basic chain-link or simple wood gate at the time of a new fence lands at the low end. A custom cedar privacy gate, steel-framed gate, keypad gate, or retrofit into old posts moves toward the high end.

Driveway and security gates are priced separately. HomeAdvisor reports average security gate installation at $2,346, with a typical range of $879 to $3,818 and high-end systems around $7,800. HomeGuide reports many security gate installations from $1,200 to $8,500, averaging around $4,000, with premium custom automatic systems reaching $12,000 or more. Local markets vary: recent Angi city pages list gate installation ranges around $195 to $5,915 in Houston and $190 to $5,740 in Indianapolis.

The main cost drivers are gate width and weight, single versus double leaf, wood versus vinyl versus aluminum versus steel versus composite, new posts versus existing posts, concrete footings, slope transitions, demolition, disposal, keypads, intercoms, cameras, electrical trenching, permits, HOA review, and finish quality.

How to Keep a Fence Gate from Sagging

Most gate failures are not style failures. They are structural or hardware failures: sagging, dragging, latch misalignment, weak posts, undersized hinges, poor drainage around posts, and too little clearance over moving soil or sloped grade.

For wood gates, use a real frame, not just pickets screwed together. A diagonal brace, tension rod, adjustable anti-sag cable, or welded metal frame helps transfer load back to the hinge side. For wide horizontal slat gates and heavy privacy panels, a metal frame is usually worth the money.

Posts matter as much as the gate. A narrow, shallow, or rotted post cannot hold alignment. Gate posts commonly need deeper and stronger footings than line posts because they carry moving loads. Soil type, frost depth, drainage, and gate weight all affect the final specification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hardware should be sized by gate weight and use. Light strap hinges may work on a small garden gate. Heavy privacy gates and driveway gates need rated hinges, through-bolts where appropriate, and a latch that can tolerate small seasonal movement without failing.

Pool, Safety, HOA, and Utility Notes

If the gate is part of a pool barrier, start with code-rated hardware. Pool gates are commonly required to open outward away from the pool, self-close, self-latch, and meet latch-height and opening limitations. The International Swimming Pool and Spa Code is often referenced, but your local adopted code and amendments control the actual requirement.

For any post digging, call 811 before work starts. 811 is the national free before-you-dig service, and it applies to small projects like fence posts, mailboxes, landscaping, and gate installations. It is a simple step that can prevent utility strikes, delays, injury, and expensive repairs.

Also check zoning, HOA, and easement rules. Cities often regulate fence height, front-yard visibility triangles, driveway sightlines, materials, and setbacks. A gate added to an existing fence can still trigger rules if it changes access, height, location, or pool-barrier compliance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to DIY vs. When to Hire a Pro

A handy homeowner can often DIY a small garden gate, picket gate, chain-link walk gate, or simple side-yard gate if the posts are solid and the opening is square. Plan for 4 to 8 hours for a straightforward replacement and 1 to 2 days if you are setting new posts in concrete and waiting for cure time before hanging the gate.

Hire a pro when the gate is wider than about 42 inches, built from heavy privacy materials, attached to masonry, part of a pool barrier, located on a steep slope, tied to automatic operators, or expected to handle driveway traffic. Also bring in a professional when old posts are leaning or rotten. Hanging a new gate on bad posts only transfers the failure to new material.

For driveway automation, use qualified installers for power, controls, safety loops, photo eyes, access equipment, and emergency release. The gate has to look right, but it also has to stop, reverse, and release correctly.

How to Choose the Right Fence Gate

Start with the job the gate has to do. For privacy, choose a solid board-and-batten, framed cedar, composite, vinyl, or hidden flush design. For pets, focus on gaps and latches before style. For pool areas, code compliance comes first. For driveways, decide between swing, slide, rolling, or cantilever based on available space and slope.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Then size the opening around real use. A 36-inch pedestrian gate is a practical default for side yards. Wider openings may be needed for lawn equipment, wheelbarrows, outdoor furniture, or service access. Double gates are useful when you need occasional large access without making one heavy daily-use leaf.

Finally, match the gate to maintenance expectations. Wood looks warm and custom but needs sealing, staining, or paint upkeep. Vinyl and aluminum are lower maintenance. Steel is strong but needs a quality coating and rust control. Composite reduces staining and movement but can be heavy and more expensive.

The best fence gate is the one that still opens cleanly five years from now. Choose the look you like, but build it around the post, frame, hinge, latch, clearance, and code conditions that make it last.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to install a fence gate in 2026?

A manual pedestrian fence gate commonly costs about $200 to $1,500 or more installed, depending on size, material, posts, and hardware. Security and driveway gates cost much more; many automatic systems run about $1,200 to $8,500, with premium custom systems reaching $12,000 or more.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What type of fence gate is best for privacy?

Board-and-batten, framed cedar, vinyl privacy, composite, hidden flush, and minimalist slab gates are strong privacy choices. For wide solid gates, use stronger posts, heavy-duty hinges, and a metal frame or anti-sag system.

How wide should a backyard fence gate be?

For most pedestrian and side-yard gates, 36 inches is a practical minimum. Go wider if you need to move trash carts, lawn mowers, wheelbarrows, outdoor furniture, or service equipment through the opening.

How do you keep a wood fence gate from sagging?

Use a rigid frame, diagonal bracing or an adjustable anti-sag kit, exterior-rated fasteners, properly sized hinges, and strong posts set plumb in sound footings. Wide horizontal or solid privacy gates often benefit from a welded metal frame.

What are the code requirements for a pool fence gate?

Pool gates are commonly required to open outward away from the pool, self-close, self-latch, and meet latch-height and opening limits. Local code controls, so verify requirements before ordering hardware or scheduling inspection.

Should a driveway gate swing or slide?

Use a swing gate when the driveway has enough flat clear space for the leaf to open. Use a sliding, rolling, or cantilever gate when space is tight, the gate is near a road, or the grade makes swinging impractical.
