Yes, adults can retrain for construction, but the right route depends on the job they want, where they live and what experience or qualifications they already have. Start by choosing a target occupation, then check its training and card requirements before committing to a course. In England, possible routes include courses, apprenticeships and Skills Bootcamps; funding and local availability are conditional, not guaranteed.
How do I change careers into construction?
Work backwards from a specific role rather than choosing whichever course is easiest to find. Construction includes many different occupations, and their entry routes, qualifications and site requirements are not interchangeable. A course that is useful for one role may not qualify you for another.

- Name the job you want. If you are not sure, explore construction career information and compare the work involved in roles that interest you.
- Check what that role requires. Look for relevant qualifications, practical experience, any required card or health-and-safety test, and what employers ask for in vacancies.
- Compare routes. Consider a course, an apprenticeship or a Skills Bootcamp, taking account of the occupation taught, duration, practical learning, location, entry requirements and confirmed costs.
- Ask about work experience. Find out whether the course includes a placement, helps arrange one or expects you to find it yourself.
- Confirm the details before enrolling. Ask the provider to identify the qualification and outcome, explain any placement or card requirements, and confirm in writing which costs—if any—it expects funding to cover.
Official Skills for Careers guidance can help people explore construction careers, courses, apprenticeships and vacancies: Skills for Careers. Availability and requirements vary by occupation and location; finding a vacancy or a course listing is not a guarantee of entry or employment.
Can I retrain for a construction job as an adult?
Yes. Adult retraining is supported through several kinds of provision, including courses and Skills Bootcamps, while apprenticeships are another route where an employer has a suitable vacancy. The practical choice is the one that matches your target role and circumstances—not simply the one with the most appealing label.

Think about the balance between structured learning and time on site, the weekly commitment, travel, entry requirements and how you will manage costs. If you already have relevant skills or qualifications, ask a provider or prospective employer whether they are recognised for the role you want. Do not assume that previous experience replaces a required qualification, or that a course will repeat only what you need; establish the learning content and entry assessment directly with the provider.
Which construction training route should I choose?
These routes differ in how training is organised and what outcome they offer. A qualification or course title alone is not enough to compare them: check the occupation covered, the amount of practical learning and the employer or placement arrangements.
| Route | What to expect | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Course | May provide occupational knowledge and may connect to practical placement. | Whether the qualification relates to your target role, what practical work is included, and whether placement is included or supported. |
| Apprenticeship | Training is linked to an employer vacancy; availability depends on employers advertising places. | The advertised occupation, location, entry requirements, training and vacancy terms. Check current vacancies rather than assuming a place is available. |
| Skills Bootcamp | In England, the 2026–27 guidance describes employer-co-designed, flexible courses of up to 16 weeks in priority sectors including construction. Eligible participants are offered a job interview on completion. | Local availability, eligibility, course content, commitment, costs and the terms of the interview offer. An interview is not a guaranteed job. |
Skills Bootcamps are intended to support adults to upskill or retrain. The Department for Education and Department for Work and Pensions 2026–27 guidance describes them as employer-co-designed and up to 16 weeks long, with an interview offer for eligible participants who complete the course. These are England arrangements; check current local provision and your eligibility with the provider. See the Skills Bootcamps funding and performance management guidance.

Do I need site experience before applying for construction jobs?
Not every route has the same experience requirements, so check the specific vacancy or qualification. Practical experience can help you develop and demonstrate role-related technical and employability skills. Some level 2 and level 3 construction qualifications involve placements, but a placement is not the same thing as a promise of a job.
For applicable placement funding in non-devolved areas, 2026 guidance sets conditions that include enrolment on an eligible level 2 or level 3 construction course, at least 360 guided learning hours and a minimum three-week placement with a construction employer directly linked to the qualification. Other conditions apply. The placement-funding scope described in that guidance excludes apprenticeships and NVQs. These particular funding rules should not be assumed to apply in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.

Before starting a placement, ask the provider what work you will do, how it relates to the qualification and what needs to be in place beforehand. The provider guidance says placements should develop competencies related to the learner’s role and employability; learners need any relevant placement card and health-and-safety requirements before starting. Confirm the arrangements with the provider rather than assuming that enrolment alone covers them. See the construction industry placement guidance.
Can I get a CSCS card if I’m new to construction?
Being new to construction does not by itself establish which card or test you need. The relevant card and health-and-safety test depend on the work you intend to do. First identify the target role, then confirm its requirements with the provider or employer and check that any course you take is relevant to that route.
Do not pay for a card application or test on the assumption that one particular card suits every construction job. Ask the provider which card and associated test apply to your qualification and intended work, what you must complete first, and whether any cost support applies to your circumstances. The funding guidance discussed below applies only to specified learners and qualifications; it is not a universal free-card scheme.
If you are preparing for a required test, make sure any study material matches the test relevant to your role. A general search for a “CSCS test revision book” does not establish which book, edition or test is appropriate for you.
Can I get help paying for construction training in England?
Possibly, but eligibility depends on the learner, course, funding rules and local arrangements. England’s 2026–27 Adult Skills Fund rules describe a £26,800 earnings threshold for specified eligibility, including circumstances involving unemployed and economically inactive people. That figure is a threshold within particular funding rules, not a course price, a universal entitlement or a guarantee that every cost will be covered.

From August 2026, the rules allow providers to claim specified CSCS card application and associated health-and-safety test costs for eligible learners enrolled in qualifying level 2 or level 3 construction qualifications in sector subject area 05.2. The learner must meet Adult Skills Fund eligibility requirements and be enrolled on an eligible learning aim. Course eligibility, learner circumstances, available places and local administration can all affect what support is available.

Before enrolling or paying, ask the provider to confirm in writing:
- Whether your exact qualification or learning aim is eligible.
- Whether you meet the relevant learner eligibility rules.
- Whether any CSCS card application or test cost is covered, and what is excluded.
- Whether the funding is available for your location and at the time you plan to start.
- What you would have to pay yourself, including any costs not covered by the funding.
Adult Skills Fund arrangements are not a UK-wide entitlement. The guidance describes England rules; devolved authorities make separate decisions. In devolved areas, strategic authorities decide whether CSCS card costs can be funded. Do not apply the England threshold or card-cost provisions to Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland without checking the rules that apply there. Consult the current Adult Skills Fund funding and performance management guidance and confirm the details with the training provider.
How do I compare courses and vacancies without choosing the wrong route?
Compare like with like. A short course, a vacancy-based apprenticeship and a Bootcamp may differ in qualification, practical experience and outcome, even if all relate to construction. Use the same questions for each option:
- Occupation: What job or skill area does it prepare you for?
- Learning: What qualification or learning aim is included, and what are the entry requirements?
- Experience: Is practical site learning included, arranged or required separately?
- Employer link: Is there an employer involved, a placement, an apprenticeship vacancy or only an interview offer for eligible completers?
- Practicalities: What are the location, travel and time commitments?
- Cost: What is the full cost, what funding might apply to you, and what remains payable?
- Outcome: Is the stated outcome a qualification, a placement, an interview offer or a job? Do not treat one as another.
For apprenticeships, inspect the actual vacancy: the occupation, employer, location, entry requirements and training details. For Bootcamps, verify local availability and eligibility. For a course with a placement, ask how it is connected to the qualification and what you must complete before starting. The official careers guidance links to construction training and vacancy information, but any live opportunity and its terms must be checked when you apply.

Do the England rules apply across the UK?
No. The most specific funding information here concerns England and non-devolved areas. The Adult Skills Fund, Skills Bootcamps and specified card-cost provisions should not be described as UK-wide entitlements. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have separate arrangements, and the current equivalent rules were not established here. Check with the relevant local authority or training provider before relying on an England funding figure or programme description.
What should I check before committing to a course?
Ask for the exact qualification or learning aim, the occupational role it supports and the practical work included. Confirm whether any placement is part of the course, how it is arranged, whether it is directly linked to the qualification, and what card or health-and-safety requirements apply before you start. If you need to travel or balance study with other commitments, check the location, duration and weekly schedule as well.
For any promised outcome, clarify what it means in practice. A course may provide learning and possibly a placement; an apprenticeship depends on an advertised employer vacancy; and an eligible Skills Bootcamp completer may receive an offer of a job interview. None of those descriptions on its own guarantees a job. Get fees and any funding decision confirmed before paying or enrolling, especially where a course is described as funded or connected to a card.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use work experience or qualifications I already have to shorten retraining?
Possibly, but do not assume that past experience replaces a qualification or requirement for the role you want. Ask the provider or prospective employer whether your existing skills and qualifications are recognised, and request details of the course content and any entry assessment so you can see what learning remains.
Does a Skills Bootcamp guarantee me a construction job?
No. England’s 2026–27 guidance describes Bootcamps of up to 16 weeks and says eligible participants who complete the course receive an offer of a job interview. An interview offer is not a job offer or a guarantee of employment. Check local availability, eligibility, course content and the precise outcome with the provider.

Does every level 2 or 3 construction course include a placement?
No. Check whether a particular course includes or supports a placement. In applicable non-devolved-area funding guidance, placement conditions include an eligible level 2 or 3 construction course, at least 360 guided learning hours and a minimum three-week placement directly linked to the qualification. Other conditions apply, and the funding scope described excludes apprenticeships and NVQs.
Is the CSCS card and test free for everyone retraining?
No. From August 2026, England’s rules allow providers to claim specified application and associated test costs for eligible learners on qualifying level 2 or 3 construction learning aims in sector subject area 05.2. You must meet the relevant Adult Skills Fund eligibility rules. Ask the provider to confirm in writing whether your exact course, card and test costs are covered.
Where can I find a CSCS test revision book?
A search for a “CSCS test revision book” may help you find study materials, but first establish which card and health-and-safety test apply to your intended work. No specific title, edition, price or product listing is verified here, so check that any material you consider matches the relevant test.

Choose the construction role first, then compare the route, qualification, experience, card requirements, location and total cost against that goal.
