Neither FAKRO nor Werner is the right choice for every attic: the best ladder is the specific model that fits your opening and ceiling, suits the space and load, and can be installed safely. Measure the opening, floor-to-ceiling height, swing clearance, and landing space first. Then compare each candidate’s load rating, insulation or fire protection, design, installation instructions, included parts, and written warranty.
Measure your space before comparing brands
A brand-level comparison cannot establish whether a ladder will fit your attic. Use the exact model’s technical sheet and installation manual to check these four dimensions:
- Rough opening: Measure its width and length, and check the framing condition. Do not assume a nominal opening size is the ladder’s actual fit requirement.
- Floor-to-ceiling height: Confirm the model’s stated height range and that the ladder will extend as intended.
- Swing clearance: Check that the door and ladder can open fully without hitting a wall, fixture, or other obstruction.
- Landing space: Make sure there is room to stand and use the ladder safely at the bottom.
Werner’s FAQ lists standard rough openings of 22-1/2 × 54, 25 × 54, 25-1/2 × 64, and 30 × 54 inches, but those sizes do not guarantee fit for every model or installation. If a ladder will not open fully or extend completely to the ground, Werner says not to modify it for use. Check the specific model’s instructions rather than altering the ladder to make it fit. How the brands’ model ranges differ
FAKRO: options for insulation, fire protection, and different designs
FAKRO USA lists wooden and metal folding ladders, scissor ladders, insulated and fire-rated models, and an electrically operated model. Its guidance starts with the rough opening, then ceiling height and insulation, and also recommends considering the model’s load rating. FAKRO says its ladders come pre-assembled with the frame and ladder; accessories vary by model and may be included or sold separately. FAKRO USA attic ladder selection guidance

Published model examples illustrate why you need to compare individual specifications rather than treating the brand as one product:
- LWP: The U.S. technical specification lists multiple opening sizes and room-height ranges, a 350 lb maximum loading, and an R-value of 5.7. FAKRO LWP technical specification
- LWT: FAKRO describes super-thermo insulation, an R-value of 12.5, and a 350 lb capacity. FAKRO LWT product information
- LWF60: FAKRO claims 60-minute fire protection under ASTM E119 and NFPA 288, and lists a 375 lb maximum loading. Confirm the current documentation and applicable requirements for the exact installation. FAKRO LWF60 product information
- Metal ladder family: FAKRO describes differences between models; one listed model has a handrail, non-slip metal steps, and a 400 lb capacity. That figure is not a family-wide rating. FAKRO metal attic ladder information
Werner: wood and aluminum families with different ratings
Werner’s U.S. selection guide describes wood and aluminum models. Its family-level maximum load ratings vary: traditional aluminum models are rated up to 375 lb, compact and W-series wood models at 250 lb, and WH-series wood models at 350 lb. These are family-level figures, not a rating for every ladder. Verify the exact model’s rating and applicable standard in its current documentation. Werner attic ladder selection guide

Compare candidates model by model
Use this table after identifying models that fit your opening and height. Figures below are manufacturer-published specifications, not results of an independent, matched comparison.
| Factor | FAKRO | Werner |
|---|---|---|
| Opening and height | FAKRO advises checking rough-opening size and ceiling height; LWP lists multiple opening sizes and room-height ranges. Verify the selected model’s technical sheet. FAKRO guidance LWP specification | Werner identifies opening, floor-to-ceiling height, swing clearance, and landing space as measurements to check. Its FAQ lists standard openings, but exact fit depends on model and installation. Selection guide FAQ |
| Materials and design | USA lineup includes wooden and metal folding, scissor, and electrically operated options. Availability and features are model-specific. FAKRO guidance | U.S. guide describes wood and aluminum families. Confirm the selected model’s design and materials in its documentation. Werner selection guide |
| Published load ratings | Examples: LWP 350 lb; LWT 350 lb; LWF60 375 lb; one metal-family model 400 lb. Ratings are model-specific. LWP LWT LWF60 Metal family | Family-level maximums: traditional aluminum up to 375 lb; compact and W-series wood 250 lb; WH-series wood 350 lb. Verify the selected model’s rating. | Installation | Follow the exact model’s manual and confirm the installation suits the framing and site. | Written warranty | FAKRO USA lists two years from purchase for some named models and one year for others; consult the current terms and exclusions. FAKRO warranty terms | Duration not stated in the Werner sources cited here. Verify the current written warranty for the exact model before comparing coverage. |
Check load, insulation, and fire requirements carefully
A published load rating is not interchangeable across brands or product families. Match the rating to the exact model and check its applicable standard. If you will carry materials, account for the combined load of the user and what they are carrying rather than treating the ladder’s maximum as a target. The figures above are manufacturer claims, not independent comparative test results.

- 【Durable Aluminum Construction】:Made of high-quality aluminum, this attic ladder provides strength and durability, allowing it to support up to 380 pounds.
- 【Easy Installation & Operation】: Featuring a retractable and folding design, this household folding ladder can be effortlessly pulled down for use and conveniently folded away when not in use, saving valuable space in your home.
- 【Versatile Fit】:Engineered to fit a wide range of ceiling heights, this ladder suits ceilings measuring between 7' 8" and 10' 3".
- 【Enhanced Stability】:Fitted with heavy-duty hinges, our attic ladder delivers steady support and eliminates hazardous wobbling while climbing up and down. Non-slip treads offer secure grip on every step, and the built-in handrail provides an extra safety buffer.
- 【Smooth and Quiet Operation】:The ladder's opening and closing mechanisms are designed for effortless and quiet operation, minimizing disturbance.
Insulation figures and fire claims are also model-specific. An insulated hatch may matter when the attic boundary is part of the building envelope; a fire-rated ladder may be relevant where the applicable design or code requires one. FAKRO’s stated LWF60 rating is a manufacturer claim under ASTM E119 and NFPA 288, not a substitute for confirming current certification and local code requirements for the intended installation.
Plan for a safe installation
Attic ladder installation involves overhead work and framing; the opening, frame, and ladder must be installed according to the model’s instructions. Werner says most models require two people and advises hiring a professional carpenter when the necessary carpentry skills are lacking. Follow the exact manual for either brand, and check applicable local building codes with the relevant local authority. Werner’s guide states: “Verify that the product you are considering and its installation meet all applicable building codes in your area.” Werner selection guide

Choose by fit, then by features and coverage
- Remove any model that does not match the rough opening, ceiling height, swing clearance, and landing space.
- Among models that fit, select the material and design that suit the space and intended use.
- Check the exact load rating and any required standard, then compare insulation or fire protection only if those features matter for your installation.
- Confirm what is included, whether any accessory is model-compatible, and who can install the ladder safely.
- Read the current written warranty for the selected model, including duration, covered parts, and exclusions.
Choose FAKRO if a fitting model offers the particular insulation, fire-rated, scissor, or electric option your project needs. Choose Werner if a fitting model in its wood or aluminum range better matches your material or design preference. Neither conclusion replaces checking the model’s dimensions, documentation, and installation requirements.
