Fahy Commons for Public Engagement and Innovation is Muhlenberg College’s three-story academic and community building in Allentown, Pennsylvania. It combines teaching rooms, creative studios, a Makerspace, administrative offices and public-facing programs with highly visible environmental systems, making the facility both a working campus hub and a case study in sustainable design.
The College says the project has earned LEED Platinum, Core Living Building Certification and Phius Passive House Certification. Those are separate programs with different requirements, and award claims beyond the College’s announcements should be attributed to the organizations that reported them.

An academic and civic crossroads
Muhlenberg describes Fahy Commons as a hub for academic and creative pursuits as well as a place for community members. The mix is intentional: instruction shares the building with offices that connect the College to local partners, spaces for making and art production, and programs that communicate research to a wider public.

Visible learning, not hidden infrastructure
The sustainability strategy is meant to be experienced. A dashboard in the entrance vestibule displays real-time energy and solar information, while views and landscape features make environmental conditions part of the daily route through the building. The College says students in sustainability studies use the facility to monitor and assess its performance, turning a campus utility into a teaching resource.
Rich Niesenbaum, a biology professor and director of the College’s sustainability studies program, expressed the educational aim this way: “I firmly believe that buildings on a college’s campus can and should do more than simply house students and academic endeavors, but rather also offer teachable moments.”
Programs and spaces housed in Fahy Commons
Muhlenberg’s facilities information identifies several programs and room types in the building. Their combination explains why the project is described as more than a standard classroom building.
Office of Community Engagement, Innovation and Entrepreneurship
This program links academic work with community engagement and entrepreneurial activity. Locating it alongside teaching and creative spaces supports workshops, collaboration and projects that can involve people beyond the campus.
Makerspace
The Makerspace provides a dedicated setting for hands-on experimentation and project work. It gives students a place to move from an idea or assignment to a physical prototype or demonstration, complementing the building’s studios and classrooms.

Division of Graduate and Continuing Education
Graduate and continuing-education activity extends the building’s use beyond the traditional undergraduate schedule. The division’s presence also reinforces Fahy Commons as a location for multiple types of learners and public programming.
Office of Religious and Spiritual Life
The Office of Religious and Spiritual Life adds a reflective and community-oriented function to a building otherwise known for making, research and instruction.
Institute of Public Opinion
The Institute of Public Opinion is one of the building’s public-facing academic resources. Its work gives Fahy Commons a direct connection to civic research and public discussion.
Art studios and classrooms
Art studios support production-based teaching, while classrooms provide conventional instruction and meetings. Together, these rooms allow the building to accommodate both scheduled courses and less formal collaboration.
Sustainability features that occupants can see
Biophilic design and native planting
Muhlenberg says the project is rooted in biophilic design, which brings natural patterns, views and living systems into the occupied environment. A native rain garden sits at the entrance, and sightlines through the building extend toward a wooded hill. Native landscaping supports that visual connection while helping the site respond to rainfall.

Energy and solar information at the entrance
The vestibule dashboard presents current energy and solar information instead of leaving building performance inside a facilities office. Students can use those readings as material for observation and assessment, and visitors can see that the building is intended to operate as an educational exhibit.
Solar generation and envelope details
Walls & Ceilings reported that Fahy Commons has a 183-panel solar array. The same trade publication described standing-seam metal roof panels, triple-glazed bird-friendly windows, bee-friendly bricks and native landscaping. These are reports about this project’s design and construction; they should not be read as a guarantee of identical performance in another building.
Why the details matter together
Individual elements such as glazing, roof construction, planting and solar generation address different parts of a building’s environmental profile. Their value at Fahy Commons is also interpretive: students can see how site design, enclosure and energy systems operate as a connected whole rather than as isolated products.
What certifications Fahy Commons has received
The College’s announcements identify three certifications. They come from different systems and should not be treated as interchangeable rankings.
| Certification | What the College reported | Date and attribution |
|---|---|---|
| LEED Platinum | Fahy Commons is LEED Platinum certified. | Stated in Muhlenberg’s announcement about the building’s Living Building certification. |
| Core Living Building Certification | Muhlenberg described Fahy Commons as the first project in the world to achieve the Core designation. | Announced by Muhlenberg on April 22, 2024; the program is administered by the International Living Future Institute. |
| Phius Passive House Certification | The College called the building Pennsylvania’s first non-dormitory higher-education Passive House and the state’s largest non-residential Passive House. | Announced by Muhlenberg on March 18, 2025. The superlatives are the College’s claims. |
LEED Platinum
LEED Platinum is the highest level in the LEED rating system. Muhlenberg reports the level for Fahy Commons, but the available announcement does not provide a project score or a category-by-category breakdown. The certification therefore establishes the stated rating, not a specific list of points earned in each area.

Core Living Building Certification
Muhlenberg announced the Core Living Building Certification on Earth Day, April 22, 2024, and said the project was the first worldwide to receive that designation. The Core program is administered by the International Living Future Institute. “Core” is a distinct certification scope, so it should not be described as another name for LEED Platinum or Passive House.
Phius Passive House
In a March 18, 2025 announcement, Muhlenberg said Fahy Commons had earned Phius Passive House Certification. The same announcement used two state-level descriptions: Pennsylvania’s first non-dormitory higher-education Passive House and its largest non-residential Passive House. Those statements are presented here as the College’s reported distinctions, not as independently verified rankings.

Three 2023 awards reported by Walls & Ceilings
A Walls & Ceilings article reported that the project received three awards in 2023:
- Green Building United’s Groundbreaker Award in Sustainable New Development or Major Renovation.
- An AIA Pennsylvania COTE Award.
- The higher-education award in the international METROPOLIS Planet Positive Awards.
The available reporting does not include direct confirmation from each awarding organization. These honors should therefore be described as reported by Walls & Ceilings rather than as an exhaustive list of every award Fahy Commons has received.

How the design supports teaching
Fahy Commons functions as a living laboratory because the building exposes information and conditions that are normally hidden. Solar and energy readings provide data for observation. The rain garden and native landscape offer a site-scale example of water and habitat strategies. Interior views toward the wooded hill and the use of natural references support the College’s biophilic-design approach.
That setup can support assignments in sustainability studies, biology, design and other fields without requiring a special trip to a demonstration site. Students can compare what the dashboard reports with weather, occupancy or seasonal conditions, then discuss how a building’s design affects the people who use it. The College has not published a named independent post-occupancy energy-savings figure or a comparative environmental-impact statistic for the project, so the educational value should not be confused with a quantified performance claim.
Why the building is called Fahy Commons
Muhlenberg says the building honors Gerald P. Fahy ’79 and Cathleen A. Fahy. Their $7.5 million gift supported Fahy Commons and another campus capital project. Naming the facility after the donors recognizes that philanthropic support while the word “Commons” signals a shared setting rather than a department reserved for one discipline.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe name also fits the building’s program. Community engagement, entrepreneurship, graduate education, spiritual life, public-opinion research, art and classroom teaching occupy the same structure. The result is a commons in the practical sense: multiple groups use it for different purposes, with public-facing activity woven into the academic environment.
Quick Recap
How to describe Fahy Commons accurately
- Call it a three-story Muhlenberg College building that opened in January 2023 and contains more than 20,000 square feet of student-programming and academic space.
