TYPAR HD Heavy-Duty Sealant is a modified urethane acrylic sealant intended for adhesion at windows, doors and seams. It can be used instead of TYPAR Double-Sided Tape only for the seaming applications that TYPAR specifies on TYPAR DrainableWrap and DrainableWrap Commercial. For any other joint, choose it only after checking substrate compatibility, joint design, temperature, movement and adhesion on a representative sample.
What TYPAR HD Heavy-Duty Sealant is—and what it is not
TYPAR HD is a urethane acrylic sealant supplied for building-envelope work. Buildings.com described the product on March 20, 2024, as a way to create adhesion at doors, windows and seams in multifamily and commercial construction. Can-Cell Industries lists the same product for windows, doors and seams on building and house wraps.

“Urethane acrylic” identifies a product category, not a universal performance specification. Two sealants in that category can differ in substrate compatibility, movement capability, cure behavior and approved uses. TYPAR HD’s published claims therefore apply to TYPAR HD, not automatically to another urethane acrylic product.
The most important scope limit concerns wrap seams. The Buildings.com product article identifies TYPAR HD as an approved alternative to TYPAR Double-Sided Tape for specified seaming applications with TYPAR DrainableWrap and TYPAR DrainableWrap Commercial. That statement does not establish approval for every house wrap, flashing tape, membrane or construction joint. It also does not make the sealant a substitute for tape in unspecified locations.

When the sealant is used as part of TYPAR’s complete Weather Protection System, the article says the system is covered by a lifetime limited warranty. That is a system-level statement; it should not be read as a warranty for standalone sealant use or for a different weather-resistive-barrier assembly.
Published specifications and how to interpret them
The following figures come from the Buildings.com product article published in 2024. They are reported product specifications or claims, not results from an independent laboratory or field study.
| Characteristic | Reported value | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum joint width | Up to 2 inches | Only with proper installation and joint design, according to Buildings.com. |
| Tack-free time | 60 minutes | Reported product figure; actual surface condition depends on site conditions. |
| Full cure | 48–72 hours | Reported range, not a guarantee for every temperature, humidity or joint geometry. |
| Application or gunnability temperature | Down to 40°F | Buildings.com specification; follow the current technical data and the more restrictive site limitations. |
| VOC | Less than 1.5% | Published product claim; it is not a blanket indoor-air or environmental certification. |
| Tensile strength | Over 150 psi | Published product claim; it does not by itself predict adhesion to every substrate. |
| Standards | Exceeds AAMA 808.3 and ASTM C920 | As reported by Buildings.com; confirm the current manufacturer documentation for the exact formulation and edition. |
| Finish | Paintable and stain-resistant | Buildings.com description; verify paint compatibility and recoat timing before finishing. |
A 2-inch maximum joint is not permission to fill a deep or poorly formed gap with sealant. Joint width, depth, backing material, bond-line thickness and expected movement must be designed together. If the joint geometry is outside the published conditions, the figure cannot be used as a performance guarantee.

Where the sealant fits in a window, door or wrap installation
Windows and doors
Use TYPAR HD where the project details call for a sealant bond at a window or door perimeter and the adjoining substrates are compatible. The product is intended to create adhesion, but the sealant bead is only one part of the opening detail. The sill, jamb and head must be prepared and integrated with the project’s flashing, drainage and weather-protection sequence. A bead cannot correct a missing sill pan, a contaminated substrate or an incorrectly lapped membrane.
Building- and house-wrap seams
For TYPAR DrainableWrap and TYPAR DrainableWrap Commercial, TYPAR HD may serve as the approved alternative to TYPAR Double-Sided Tape where TYPAR’s seaming instructions allow it. Confirm the exact wrap product and seam location before substituting. Do not generalize that approval to another manufacturer’s wrap or to every seam in the same wall.
Multifamily and commercial work
Buildings.com positions the sealant for multifamily and commercial projects, where repeated opening details and documented quality control matter. Establish a repeatable bead size, substrate-cleaning method and inspection check for the crew rather than relying on a worker’s visual judgment at each opening.

Temperature, cure and weather limitations
Temperature information in the available product descriptions needs careful reading. Buildings.com reports gunnability down to 40°F. Can-Cell lists an application range of 0°C to 49°C (32°F to 120°F), but its restrictions state that sealants should be applied only when both surface and air temperatures are above 4°C (39.2°F), and not on surfaces above 60°C (140°F). The listed range and the restriction are not interchangeable: the restriction is the safer operating boundary for planning work.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Measure the actual substrate temperature, not just the weather forecast or shade temperature.
- Do not apply when the surface is above 60°C (140°F), even if the air temperature is lower.
- When air or surface temperatures are near the lower limit, allow for slower skin formation and cure.
- Protect the joint from rain, washout, dust and movement until the bead has developed sufficient skin and strength.
- Use the current technical and safety documentation for humidity, frost, wet substrates and specific cure conditions.
The reported 60-minute tack-free time means the surface is expected to lose its wet tack under the stated test conditions; it does not mean the joint is ready for stress, water exposure or painting after one hour. Buildings.com reports full cure in 48–72 hours. A thick bead, low temperature, high humidity, limited air exchange or movement during cure can change the practical schedule.
How to install TYPAR HD step by step
- Confirm the detail. Check the project drawings, wrap manufacturer instructions and current TYPAR documentation. For a tape substitution, verify that the seam is on TYPAR DrainableWrap or DrainableWrap Commercial and is one of the applications TYPAR identifies as approved.
- Inspect the substrates. Remove loose material, dust, oil, release agents, frost and standing water. Check that each surface is sound enough to carry the sealant bond. Do not assume that “non-priming” means “no preparation.”
- Check the joint geometry. Set the intended width and depth, provide compatible backing where required and avoid three-sided adhesion unless the detail specifically requires it. A joint approaching 2 inches must have an engineered design; simply filling a large void is not proper joint design.
- Run an adhesion test. Can-Cell recommends checking adhesion on typical test joints. Make the test representative of the actual substrate, surface preparation, temperature and bead geometry. The installer remains responsible for verifying adhesion even though the product is considered non-priming.
- Condition the cartridge and gun. TYPAR HD is supplied in a 300 mL cartridge and is applied with an applicator gun. Cut the nozzle to produce the bead size specified by the detail, and puncture the inner seal without contaminating the nozzle.
- Apply a continuous bead. Maintain consistent pressure and tool the sealant so it wets both bonding surfaces. Avoid skips, voids, trapped air and smearing sealant onto areas that must remain clean for later flashing or drainage.
- Tool and clean immediately. Tool the bead to the required profile before skin forms. Can-Cell states that excess can be cleaned with water; use the current product instructions and avoid spreading wash water onto adjacent weather-sensitive materials.
- Allow the joint to cure. Keep the assembly stable and protected while the sealant cures. Use the 48–72-hour figure as a reported planning range, then extend the wait when site conditions or joint size warrant it.
- Inspect and document. Look for complete contact, gaps, fish-mouths, pulled edges, contamination and movement at the interface. Record substrate, temperature, lot information and test results for repeatable quality control.
Adhesion testing: a practical field check
An adhesion check should answer whether the actual sealant, substrate and preparation work together. Select representative pieces or an inconspicuous section that uses the same wrap, sheathing, frame finish or masonry found in the opening. Apply the planned bead, allow it to cure under the project’s conditions and then attempt to separate it using the method required by the current technical documentation.

Record whether failure occurs at the sealant–substrate interface, within the sealant or in the substrate itself. Interfacial release suggests a preparation or compatibility problem; cohesive failure within the sealant or substrate indicates a different condition, but it still must meet the project acceptance criteria. Repeat the check whenever the substrate, coating, temperature or cleaning method changes.

The bead will not stick
Stop production and inspect for dust, oil, frost, moisture, release agents or a coating that is not compatible. Re-clean a test area, let it dry, and repeat the representative adhesion check. If the result remains poor, obtain a substrate-specific recommendation from the manufacturer or redesign the detail; do not compensate by applying a thicker bead.

The joint cracks or pulls away
Check whether the joint is wider or deeper than the designed geometry, whether three-sided adhesion is forcing strain into the bead, and whether adjacent components moved before cure. Rework the joint with the specified backing and dimensions rather than repeatedly adding surface sealant.
Sealant is applied outside the temperature limits
Do not rely on a favorable air reading when the substrate is hotter than 60°C (140°F) or when air and surface temperatures are at or below 4°C (39.2°F), the restriction stated by Can-Cell. Reschedule, shade or condition the work area as allowed by the current manufacturer instructions, then repeat adhesion testing if conditions changed.
The sealant is being used as universal tape replacement
Return to the system detail. The documented substitution applies to specified TYPAR DrainableWrap and DrainableWrap Commercial seams. For another membrane, tape, flashing or joint, obtain written approval or use the material named by that system.
How TYPAR HD compares with other urethane acrylic products
Titebond UA 920 and Tremco TremGlaze UA1300 are separate urethane acrylic sealants with their own technical data, handling instructions and intended uses. Their category name does not make them interchangeable with TYPAR HD or approved substitutes for TYPAR wrap details.
| Comparison question | Why it matters | What to verify before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Substrate compatibility | A sealant can adhere well to one surface and release from another. | Manufacturer compatibility statements and a representative adhesion test. |
| Joint movement and geometry | Width, depth and expected movement determine strain in the cured bead. | Movement capability, backing requirements and the project detail. |
| Application temperature | Cold or overheated substrates can slow cure or impair wetting. | Both the stated range and any restrictions for air and surface temperature. |
| Cure and paint timing | Premature finishing can damage the bead or trap uncured material. | Tack-free, cure and paint-window instructions for the exact product. |
| Exposure and system approval | Window, door, wrap and exterior joints may have different water and movement demands. | Whether the product is approved for the named building-wrap or weather-protection system. |
Is TYPAR HD the right choice for your joint?
- Use it with confidence only when: the detail names TYPAR HD or permits the specified TYPAR tape substitution; substrates are compatible; temperatures meet the applicable restrictions; and a representative adhesion check passes.
- Pause and obtain technical guidance when: the substrate is coated, oily, damp, unusually hot, very cold or unfamiliar; the joint approaches 2 inches; or the assembly uses a membrane outside TYPAR’s named products.
- Choose another solution when: the project specification requires a different sealant chemistry, the system manufacturer does not approve TYPAR HD, or the joint design cannot provide the required backing, movement accommodation or cure protection.
Use the current manufacturer technical and safety documentation for substrate preparation, joint geometry, compatibility, cure conditions and worker protection. The Can-Cell distributor listing is useful for cartridge format, applicator-gun use, temperature cautions and the need for adhesion checks, but it is not a replacement for current manufacturer data.
