External Shading vs. Internal Blinds: Which Works Better for Summer Overheating?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

External shading usually works better for summer overheating because it intercepts sunlight before that energy reaches the window glass. Awnings, exterior screens, shutters and external roller blinds can therefore reduce the solar load at the glazing more directly than an internal blind or curtain. Internal coverings still have an important role when an exterior system is impractical, restricted or too exposed to wind, but the sun has already passed through the glass before the covering can block it.

That is a general rule, not a guaranteed percentage advantage. Results depend on window orientation, local climate, surrounding shade, glazing, the shading geometry, how closely a blind fits, and whether occupants operate the system at the right times. The most effective choice is the one that blocks high summer sun, suits the window direction and can be used safely without undermining ventilation, daylight or winter solar gain.

What the position of the shade changes

Solar heat enters through a window in stages. Sunlight reaches the glass, some is reflected, some is transmitted indoors and some is absorbed by the glazing. Once transmitted, it warms floors, furniture and other surfaces. Those surfaces then release heat into the room.

An external shade acts before the sunlight reaches the glass. By intercepting direct sun outside, it limits the energy available to be transmitted or absorbed by the window. An internal blind acts after transmission has already occurred. It can stop light from reaching the room, but the blind itself may warm up between the glass and the room and radiate or convect some of that heat indoors.

This is why official guidance consistently places exterior shading first when the specific objective is reducing overheating. It does not mean every outside product beats every inside product in every installation: a poorly sized, permanently raised or wind-damaged exterior device may perform worse in practice than a close-fitting internal covering that occupants use reliably.

The UK Government’s England-specific overheating checklist says: “Consider installing internal blinds or curtains, or external shutters, roller blinds or awnings are also very effective.” The wording recognises both options while identifying external devices as particularly effective.

When each window is most at risk

East-facing windows

East windows receive low-angle morning sun. Morning heat can accumulate before the building has cooled from the previous day, particularly in bedrooms and rooms with limited cross-ventilation. A shade that can be deployed early, before direct sunlight reaches the glass, is useful. Fixed overhangs designed for high midday sun may not stop low morning rays, so the device needs to match the sun angle.

West-facing windows

West windows receive low-angle afternoon sun, often when outdoor air and the building fabric are already warm. This combination can make west glazing a significant overheating risk. Vertical exterior screens, shutters or side-guided blinds can be more suitable than a shallow horizontal overhang because they address low-angle rays.

South-facing windows

In many locations, south-facing windows receive strong summer sun. High-angle rays can sometimes be blocked by a correctly designed overhang or awning while lower winter sun is admitted. The exact geometry depends on latitude, window height and the depth and position of the projection; a generic dimension should not be assumed.

North-facing windows and diffuse heat

North-facing glazing may receive less direct solar exposure in some climates, but it can still contribute to overheating through diffuse sky radiation, reflected light or nearby buildings. Surrounding trees, adjacent structures and the actual local sun path matter more than the compass label alone.

External shading options

Exterior solar screens

New South Wales Climate and Energy Action describes exterior screens as a way to block heat and ultraviolet radiation while retaining clear views. Screen openness, fabric colour, daylight transmission, appearance and resistance to wind vary by product. A more open fabric may preserve outward visibility but admit more solar energy; a denser fabric may improve solar control while reducing daylight and views. Ask for product-specific optical and wind information rather than assuming all screens perform alike.

Awnings

Awnings can cover a window before sunlight reaches the glazing. Retractable models provide seasonal control: they can be extended during hot sunny periods and withdrawn when winter solar gain is useful. Operation is part of the design, not an afterthought. NSW guidance advises retracting awnings during storms or high winds. Larger or heavier awnings may require professional installation because the wall, fixings and structure must carry the load.

An awning’s effectiveness depends on projection, width, side coverage, window size and sun angle. A narrow horizontal awning may shade high summer sun but leave early-morning or late-afternoon rays exposed. Side flaps, drop screens or a different exterior system may be needed for east and west façades.

External shutters and roller blinds

External shutters and roller blinds provide a physical barrier outside the glass. They can offer strong control when fully closed and, depending on construction, may also improve privacy or security. Their suitability depends on the facade, available fixing points, planning or lease restrictions, emergency egress requirements and local weather exposure. Security performance and storm resistance are product-specific claims that need verification from the manufacturer or installer.

Fixed architectural shading

Overhangs, fins, balconies and recessed windows can provide passive shading without daily operation. They are most useful when designed for the building’s orientation and local sun angles. Their fixed nature is also their limitation: they cannot be moved aside to admit desirable winter sun or compensate for unusual weather. A design professional can model the geometry where major glazing or a new extension is involved.

Internal blinds and curtains

Close-fitting lined coverings

Australian government guidance recommends close-fitting lined blinds or curtains and advises closing coverings during warm months. A close fit limits gaps through which sun can enter. Lining can improve the covering’s ability to reflect or absorb incoming radiation, but the blind still sits inside the glazing and therefore cannot prevent the first solar interaction with the glass.

When internal coverings are the practical choice

Internal blinds are often preferable where a rented home, leasehold rules, heritage controls, facade access, planning requirements or structural limitations prevent external work. They are also easier to install, inspect and replace from inside. For upper floors or locations with severe wind exposure, avoiding exterior hardware may reduce maintenance and operational risk.

Use the covering before the room heats up. Closing it after sunlight has been striking the glass for hours cannot undo heat already stored in the glazing and room surfaces. Australian advice also recommends opening coverings after sunset when evening air can enter, provided doing so is safe and does not compromise security.

Side-by-side comparison

Decision factor External shading Internal blinds or curtains
Position relative to glass Intercepts direct sun before it reaches the glazing. Acts after sunlight has passed through the glazing.
Overheating potential Generally the stronger first measure for reducing direct solar heat gain. Useful, but some heat has already reached or warmed the glass.
Winter solar gain Retractable or adjustable systems can be opened; fixed systems cannot. Can be opened or drawn back quickly, subject to the same seasonal operating discipline.
Low-angle east and west sun Vertical screens, shutters or side protection can address it; design must match the angle. Can block the light once it enters, but does not stop the glass from receiving it.
Views and daylight Screen openness and deployment affect both; specifications vary. Open when daylight or views are wanted, close when solar control is needed.
Wind and weather exposure Hardware and fabric are exposed; awnings should be retracted in storms or high winds. Protected indoors and generally less exposed to weather.
Installation constraints May require facade access, suitable fixings, permissions and professional installation for large or heavy items. Usually simpler to fit from inside, but window recesses and ventilation still need to be considered.
Daily operation Motorised or manual systems need timely deployment and safe storm response. Easy to operate, but must be closed early enough to prevent heat build-up.
Evidence of a universal percentage advantage Not established. Performance varies by building, product, climate and operation. Not established as a universal comparison with exterior systems.

How to choose for a particular home

1. Identify the overheating rooms

Record which rooms become uncomfortable, at what time and under what weather conditions. Note whether the problem follows morning sun, afternoon sun or all-day exposure. Bedrooms, glazed extensions and rooms with large unshaded windows deserve particular attention because discomfort can persist into the evening.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Map orientation and existing shade

Record each affected window’s direction, size, frame position and nearby obstructions. Trees, neighbouring buildings, balconies and roof overhangs can already block part of the solar path. Do not select a device from a window photograph alone; the sun angle and side exposure often determine whether the solution works.

3. Check the glazing and ventilation context

Window type, glass specification, opening size and the ability to ventilate at night all affect the result. Shading is one part of overheating control, not a replacement for appropriate ventilation. The UK checklist identifies ventilation and other home conditions alongside shading. If windows cannot be opened safely or cross-ventilation is weak, shading may reduce heat gain without fully resolving night-time discomfort.

4. Decide whether winter sun is valuable

Where winter solar gain helps warm the home, favour retractable or adjustable external shading rather than a permanent obstruction. Seasonal operation can block summer sun and admit useful winter sunlight. If winter gain is not wanted, a fixed solution may be acceptable, subject to facade, maintenance and permission requirements.

5. Match the device to the sun angle

High-angle south sun may respond to an overhang or awning. Low-angle east or west sun often requires a vertical screen, shutter, roller blind or side protection. A covering that leaves the exposed edge of the glass open will not provide complete protection during the hours that matter most.

6. Check ownership, planning and access

External equipment can affect the facade, neighbouring property, shared walls, listed or heritage fabric and communal management rules. Confirm permissions before ordering. Measure fixing locations and obtain an installer assessment for large, heavy or motorised products. Internal coverings may avoid some permissions but still need secure fixing, clear window operation and unobstructed escape routes.

Operating the system through a hot spell

  1. Deploy before direct sun arrives. Close internal coverings or extend exterior shades at the start of the relevant exposure, not after the room has heated.
  2. Keep the exposed elevations covered during the hottest sunny periods. NSW guidance specifically advises using shades during the hottest sunny periods.
  3. Respond to wind. Retract awnings in storms or high winds, as advised by NSW guidance, and follow the product’s operating limits.
  4. Use evening ventilation when conditions allow. Open coverings after sunset when cooler evening air can enter safely. Keep security, rain and air-quality conditions in mind.
  5. Reopen when solar gain is useful. Adjustable systems should not remain closed automatically through cool winter days or mild periods when daylight and passive warmth are beneficial.

Ventilation, glazing and other overheating measures

Shading reduces incoming solar energy, but it does not remove heat already stored in walls, floors, furniture or the glazing. Ventilation can discharge that accumulated heat when outdoor conditions are cooler. The best sequence is usually to limit daytime gains with shading, then use safe evening or night ventilation when the outdoor air is suitable.

Other factors include internal heat from appliances and occupants, insulation, thermal mass, window opening design and the presence of mechanical ventilation. A shading change should therefore be assessed as part of the home’s overall overheating strategy. If a room remains hot despite effective shading, investigate ventilation and other heat sources instead of assuming that a darker blind or heavier curtain alone will solve the problem.

What the available evidence does and does not show

Measured awning research

The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation published Summer shading performance of awnings at the CCHT in September 2012. The project directly measured reduced air-conditioning energy associated with awnings, but the catalogue information available here does not report the numerical result. It supports the direction of the recommendation without supplying a universal savings figure.

The NSW 40% statement

NSW Climate and Energy Action displays a claim of up to 40% savings on heating and cooling bills per year from external shading. That is a government-page claim, not a result that should be applied to every home. The available page information does not establish the assumptions, building types, climate conditions or operating pattern needed to generalise it. Treat it as an upper-bound promotional statement from that guidance rather than a prediction for a particular project.

No universal external-versus-internal percentage

No generally applicable numerical comparison was established between external shading and internal blinds. The outcome changes with orientation, climate, glazing, device design, fit and operation. A project-specific assessment is more meaningful than quoting a single percentage.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Choosing a product without considering orientation

Symptom: a shallow awning is installed on a west window and late-afternoon heat continues.

Correction: assess low-angle sun and consider vertical or side protection, such as an exterior screen or shutter designed for that exposure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Closing the blind too late

Symptom: the blind is shut after the glass and room are already hot.

Correction: operate the covering before direct sun reaches the window and keep it closed through the hottest sunny period.

Leaving an awning deployed in high wind

Symptom: fabric movement, noisy hardware or visible strain during a storm.

Correction: retract the awning before high winds and follow the manufacturer’s limits. Consider a more wind-tolerant external system where exposure is routine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming every screen preserves the same view

Symptom: a room becomes darker or the outward view is less clear than expected.

Treating shading as a substitute for ventilation

Symptom: solar gain is reduced but the room remains hot overnight.

Correction: review safe evening ventilation, window-opening capacity and other internal heat sources. Shading and ventilation address different parts of the overheating problem.

Guidance for renovations and new construction

For a renovation, prioritise the largest exposed panes and the rooms where overheating is reported. Exterior systems should be coordinated with drainage, facade materials, opening clearances, maintenance access and electrical routes if motorisation is planned. Show the deployed and retracted positions on elevations so that views, daylight and neighbouring boundaries are understood before installation.

For new construction, decide shading alongside window size, orientation, glazing and ventilation rather than as a late decorative addition. A fixed projection can be modelled against seasonal sun angles; an adjustable system can provide more operational flexibility but adds hardware, controls and maintenance. Large areas of east- or west-facing glazing deserve early design attention because low-angle sun is difficult to block with a simple horizontal overhang.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where the glazing or external system is substantial, complex or exposed, obtain advice from a suitable local building or energy professional. The strongest public guidance here comes from England, Australia and New South Wales, so local regulations, climate and construction practice must govern the final specification.

Bottom-line decision

Choose external shading first when the main goal is preventing summer solar heat from entering through a window. Select the form according to orientation: horizontal protection for appropriate high-angle sun, and vertical or side protection where low-angle east or west sun dominates. Choose an adjustable product when winter sunlight is useful, and design in safe storm operation.

Choose internal lined blinds or curtains when external work is not feasible, but close them before direct sun arrives and open them after sunset when ventilation conditions are suitable. In either case, treat shading as one element of an overheating plan that also considers glazing, ventilation, building fabric and internal heat sources.
