Expert Tips for Fertilizing Your Lawn in Fall

Fall fertilizer timing depends on grass type and location. Use local rates, soil-test results and a product calculation—not a generic winterizer schedule.

Fall fertilizing is useful for many cool-season lawns, but it is not a universal end-of-season step. First identify whether your grass is cool-season or warm-season, then follow a local extension schedule and your soil-test results. Cool-season grasses such as fescue and Kentucky bluegrass commonly receive nitrogen in fall; warm-season grasses such as bermudagrass and zoysia generally need their nitrogen earlier, while they are actively growing.

First identify your grass and region

Grass type determines whether fall is a feeding window or a time to stop applying nitrogen. Cool-season lawns—including tall fescue, fine fescue and Kentucky bluegrass—are typically fertilized in late summer and fall. Warm-season lawns—including bermudagrass and zoysia—are generally fertilized in late spring and summer. Maryland Extension separates these schedules for established lawns, and Oklahoma State likewise distinguishes fall recovery feeding for cool-season turf from the final nitrogen application for warm-season turf. These are regional recommendations, not nationwide dates.

If the lawn contains distinct areas of different grass types, assess and treat those areas separately where practical. A single calendar date or product may not suit a mixed lawn. For local timing, consult the nearest university extension service and check current state or municipal fertilizer rules.

Choose timing and rate from local guidance

Do not treat the regional figures below as interchangeable. Rates are expressed as pounds of actual nitrogen per 1,000 square feet, not pounds of fertilizer product.

Location and grass Fall timing or rate Important qualification
Maryland: established tall fescue and Kentucky bluegrass 0.7–0.9 lb nitrogen per 1,000 sq. ft. in September, and 0.7–0.9 lb in October through November 15 University of Maryland Extension schedule; homeowner nitrogen applications are barred November 15 through March 1 in Maryland.
Maryland: established fine fescue 0.7–0.9 lb nitrogen per 1,000 sq. ft. in September; no October-through-November 15 application University of Maryland Extension schedule; follow the state’s restrictions.
Oklahoma: cool-season grasses Approximately 2–2.5 lb actual nitrogen per 1,000 sq. ft. over fall Oklahoma State University Extension’s 2026 guidance; use its regional schedule rather than combining it with Maryland’s.
Oklahoma: warm-season turf Complete nitrogen applications by September 15 Oklahoma State University Extension’s 2026 schedule; late nitrogen can promote tender growth, reduce winter hardiness and increase disease risk.
Colorado: final fall nitrogen Apply while grass remains green and at least two to three weeks before ground freeze Colorado State University Extension timing guidance; local freeze conditions matter.

In Maryland, the dates and rates above apply to the specified established grasses and are subject to the state’s restrictions. They should not be copied to another state. The recommendations from Maryland, Oklahoma and Colorado illustrate why local extension guidance matters; they do not establish one national fall rate.

Use a soil test to decide what nutrients are needed

A soil test can guide pH, phosphorus, potassium and lime decisions. Purdue Extension recommends testing for pH and nutrient needs, while also noting that no reliable soil test determines a lawn’s nitrogen needs. Use the local grass-specific schedule for nitrogen rather than expecting the soil test to supply a nitrogen rate.

Do not add phosphorus just because a product is marketed as a fall or winterizer fertilizer. Maryland restricts phosphorus-containing fertilizer on established lawns unless a soil test shows phosphorus deficiency or an allowed use—such as establishment, renovation or patching—applies. Oklahoma State turf specialist Mingying Xiang advises: “Use a soil test to determine whether phosphorus, potassium or lime is needed.” Missouri Extension also recommends basing nutrient decisions on soil conditions. Routine liming without a soil-test indication is not advised for established lawns.

Calculate how much fertilizer product to apply

Fertilizer analysis percentages show the proportion of each nutrient by product weight. To convert a nitrogen recommendation into a product amount, use:

(desired pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 sq. ft. ÷ nitrogen fraction in the fertilizer analysis) × (lawn area in sq. ft. ÷ 1,000) = pounds of fertilizer product

For example, a hypothetical recommendation of 0.9 lb nitrogen per 1,000 square feet, an 8,000-square-foot lawn and a product labeled 26% nitrogen gives (0.9 ÷ 0.26) × 8, or about 27.7 pounds of product. This demonstrates the calculation only; it is not a recommended rate for a particular lawn. Measure the lawn area and check the product label’s coverage and application directions before spreading.

Compare products by nutrients and release rate

Choose a product only after deciding the appropriate nutrient and rate for the lawn. Compare its nitrogen percentage, whether it contains phosphorus, how quickly nitrogen becomes available and the label’s application instructions. A high nitrogen percentage changes the pounds of product required; it does not change the local nitrogen recommendation.

Maryland Extension distinguishes water-soluble nitrogen, which greens turf quickly but has shorter-term effects and greater burn risk from overexposure, from water-insoluble nitrogen, which releases more gradually. Slow-release products may provide more gradual feeding, but the label and local guidance still control the rate and timing. Avoid excessive nitrogen: Maryland Extension warns that overfertilizing can increase disease vulnerability and reduce stress resistance.

Apply only when the lawn is in condition to use fertilizer

  • Do not fertilize dormant or severely drought-stressed turf. Oklahoma State Extension cautions against feeding turf in those conditions.
  • Do not apply fertilizer to frozen soil. Virginia Cooperative Extension states, “NEVER apply fertilizer to a frozen soil.”
  • For a final fall nitrogen application, Colorado State’s guidance is to apply while grass remains green and at least two to three weeks before the ground freezes.
  • When applicable guidance calls for watering in quick-release fertilizer, do so promptly to reduce the risk of turf burn.
  • Measure before applying and follow the product label. Applying extra nitrogen is not a substitute for a soil-based nutrient decision.

Account for clippings and local rules

Returning grass clippings can return nutrients to the lawn. Colorado State Extension says this practice can reduce required fertilizer rates by one-quarter to one-third under its guidance. That adjustment is specific to the guidance and lawn context; do not apply it automatically to a rate from another region.

Check current local rules before spreading fertilizer. Maryland’s homeowner nitrogen restriction bars applications from November 15 through March 1, while Oklahoma’s September 15 cutoff for warm-season nitrogen is part of that state’s 2026 turf schedule. Neither rule is a universal date for other locations.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Identify the grass. Confirm the dominant species and whether separate lawn areas have different grasses.
  2. Check local timing. Find the extension schedule for your location and species; consider active growth and local freeze timing.
  3. Test the soil. Use results to decide whether phosphorus, potassium or lime is needed, and check applicable nutrient rules.
  4. Set the nitrogen rate. Use the local recommendation for the grass and season, accounting for clippings only where the guidance supports an adjustment.
  5. Calculate product quantity. Measure lawn area, convert the fertilizer’s nitrogen percentage to a fraction and use the formula above.
  6. Check conditions and label directions. Do not apply to frozen soil or dormant, severely drought-stressed turf; follow watering and application instructions for the product.
