SIMPSON ranks first for serious gas-powered cleaning, while Kärcher is the strongest upper-tier electric choice. RYOBI and Greenworks are strong mainstream homeowner options; Generac and DEWALT are more model-dependent; Sun Joe is best for light-duty electric work; and Craftsman ranks last because the available ownership evidence is comparatively mixed.

This is an editorial comparison of major brands sold to U.S. homeowners—not a controlled brand-wide reliability test. The machines span compact electric, homeowner gas, and professional gas classes, so the right choice depends on the work you need to do.

The ranking at a glance

This is an editorial ranking of eight major pressure-washer brands for U.S. homeowners. It compares products across different classes, so a professional gas machine is not being judged by exactly the same standard as a compact electric washer for occasional car and patio cleaning.

Rank Brand Best suited to Key reason for its position
1 SIMPSON Demanding gas-powered cleaning Strong hardware, useful flow, durable frames, and professional-oriented support
2 Kärcher Upper-tier residential electric cleaning Established electric platform and meaningful U.S. warranty and exchange support
3 RYOBI Mainstream homeowner use Practical features, broad retail visibility, and accessible residential models
4 Greenworks Electric residential work Strong stated warranty coverage, particularly on Greenworks Pro brushless AC models
5 Generac Buyers who value outdoor-power service support Credible electric and gas lineup, but less decisive evidence for a universal top-tier ranking
6 DEWALT Tool-ecosystem buyers Legitimate contender, but pressure-washer quality and warranty terms are highly model-dependent
7 Sun Joe Light-duty electric cleaning Low-cost residential machines and a straightforward two-year household warranty
8 Craftsman Discount-driven purchases after careful model checking More mixed retailer evidence and greater concern about ownership risk in the models reviewed

1. SIMPSON: best for serious cleaning

SIMPSON is the best pressure-washer brand in this comparison when cleaning power, construction, and long-term serviceability matter most. It is the strongest choice for driveways, decks, fences, paint preparation, equipment, fleet work, and frequent use.

#1 Best Overall
Westinghouse ePX3500 Electric Pressure Washer, 2500 Max PSI 1.76 Max GPM with Anti-Tipping Technology, Onboard Soap Tank, Pro-Style Steel Wand, 5-Nozzle Set, for Cars/Fences/Driveways/Home/Patios
  • Delivers 2500 max PSI and 1.76 max GPM (at lowest pressure), and 2000 rated PSI and 1.2 rated GPM of water flow; Pro-style steel extendable 17.5” wand with quick-connect nozzles (0°, 15°, 25°, turbo and soap applicator)
  • Super compact and lightweight at 16.5” tall and 19 pounds for convenient storage and portability; Four quick-lock wheels with 360° steering design and low center of gravity engineered for anti-tipping design
  • Easy-coil nylon braided 25' hose; 20 ounce onboard soap tank to add detergents/chemicals for heavy duty cleaning power on decks, driveways, garage floors, stairs, fencing, patio furniture and vehicles
  • Pump automatically stops when trigger is not engaged to conserve energy and promote pump and motor life
  • Backed by a 3-Year limited service, labor and parts coverage with nationwide customer service and support network

The representative PowerShot PS3228-S is listed at 3,300 PSI and 2.5 GPM. It uses a Honda GX200 engine, an AAA triplex pump, and a welded-steel frame. The listed coverage includes a three-year commercial engine warranty, five-year commercial pump warranty, ten-year commercial frame warranty, and 90-day accessory warranty.

Those specifications illustrate why SIMPSON leads the ranking: the machine is built around more than a large maximum-pressure number. The engine, pump, frame, and available service components all matter when a washer will be used hard. SIMPSON positions the PowerShot PS3228 for contractors and demanding jobs such as deck cleaning, wood restoration, paint preparation, graffiti removal, and fleet or facility maintenance.

SIMPSON also identifies FNA Group as a vertically integrated manufacturer of pressure washers, pumps, generators, trailers, hoses, and replacement parts. That broader product and parts ecosystem is a useful advantage for owners who expect to maintain a machine rather than replace it at the first failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The trade-off: this is not automatically the best choice for every homeowner. A gas-powered professional-oriented washer is noisier, heavier, more demanding to store, and more involved to maintain than a compact electric model. It is excessive for occasional car washing or patio-furniture cleaning.

A useful SIMPSON accessory for large flat areas

For concrete driveways, patios, and other broad flat surfaces, a 15-inch pressure-washer surface cleaner can produce a more even result with less tiring back-and-forth wand work than a narrow spray stream. SIMPSON lists a universal 15-inch surface cleaner among the accessories for the PS3228. Before buying, verify the attachment’s connection type, operating-pressure range, and compatibility with the exact washer. Accessories that fit one model or fitting standard should not be assumed to fit every brand.

2. Kärcher: strongest upper-tier residential electric choice

Kärcher is the strongest electric and residential-oriented brand in this ranking. Consumer Reports identifies Kärcher as one of the earlier electric pressure-washer manufacturers, and the company has a substantial residential platform rather than a single isolated product.

Kärcher’s U.S. warranty information lists two years for electric pressure washers and three years for gas pressure washers. It also lists a Rapid Exchange program for electric pressure washers. That exchange pathway can be a meaningful ownership advantage when a homeowner wants a relatively straightforward remedy instead of diagnosing and repairing a failed unit.

Kärcher is best for homeowners who want an established electric platform, lower operating complexity than gas, and support options that are clearly stated for the U.S. market. It is particularly sensible for cars, outdoor furniture, walkways, decks, and other routine residential jobs.

Important limitation: compare the exact Kärcher model, not just the logo. Pressure, flow, hose length, nozzle selection, detergent system, pump construction, and included accessories can vary considerably. A residential electric Kärcher should not be expected to match the throughput or durability of a professional gas SIMPSON.

3. RYOBI: strong mainstream homeowner option

RYOBI earns its high position by making pressure washers approachable for ordinary homeowners. The brand is widely visible in the home-and-garden tool market, and its machines often emphasize practical features rather than relying only on a headline PSI figure.

Rank #2
Westinghouse WPX3000e Electric Pressure Washer, 3000 Max PSI and 1.76 Max GPM, Induction Motor, Onboard Soap Tank, Spray Gun and Wand, 5 Nozzle Set, for Cars/Fences/Driveways/Homes/Patios/Furniture
  • Delivers 3000 max PSI and 1.76 max GPM (at lowest pressure), and 2600 rated PSI and 1.1 rated GPM of water flow. Perfect for decks, sidewalks, fences, garage floors, exterior walls, cars and patio furniture; Comes with a .45 gallon soap tank
  • 25′ abrasion resistant super-flex hose with lightweight high pressure metal spray gun and wand with 5 quick connect nozzles (0°, 15°, 25°, soap and turbo); Compatible with pressure washer accessories like surface cleaners, undercarriage cleaners and foam cannons with M22 fittings
  • Heavy duty AC 120V electric motor and long-lasting, maintenance-free axial 3 piston auto-stop pump provides up to 1.76 gallons of water (and soap) a minute
  • Rugged steel frame with high profile 10” never-flat wheels and 35’ GFCI cord provide easy transportation and maneuverability; Includes tools and quick start guide to get cleaning in minutes
  • All Westinghouse pressure washers are functionally tested in the factory and are backed by 3-year limited manufacturer service, labor and parts coverage

The cited 2,300 PSI brushless electric model includes a turbo nozzle, hand-truck design, onboard detergent tank, quick-connect coupler, and 25-foot high-pressure hose. Those details improve setup and usability for common cleaning jobs. Consumer Reports describes RYOBI as a Home Depot-exclusive brand with aggressively priced gas and electric machines.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is, however, a crucial model-level warning: the cited RYOBI RY142300VNM product page marks that particular model as discontinued. The RYOBI brand remains relevant, but a buyer should verify that the exact model is current, that replacement accessories are available, and that the warranty shown at purchase applies to that SKU.

Best use: RYOBI is one of the safest mainstream recommendations for homeowners who value familiar controls, practical included accessories, and convenient retail access. Do not assume every RYOBI pressure washer has the same pump, motor, warranty, or cleaning ability.

4. Greenworks: strong electric value, especially on warranty

Greenworks is one of the better electric-focused choices for light-to-medium residential work. It is especially appealing to homeowners who place substantial value on the manufacturer’s stated warranty terms.

Greenworks’ U.S. warranty information states that Greenworks Pro brushless AC pressure washers receive three years of tool coverage and ten years of brushless-motor coverage under the stated terms. That is a strong warranty signal, but it must be interpreted correctly: a ten-year motor warranty does not mean the entire pressure washer, pump, hose, fittings, spray gun, or accessories are guaranteed to last ten years.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Retailer evidence for the Greenworks PW161A is broadly positive and based on a large volume of reviews. However, retailer pages disclose that review summaries can include incentivized reviews. User reviews are useful for spotting repeated complaints about fittings, leaks, setup, or premature failures, but they are not controlled durability tests.

Best use: Greenworks is a sensible choice for quieter electric cleaning around the house, especially when the exact model’s warranty and accessory availability compare favorably with competing machines.

5. Generac: credible, but not a universal leader

Generac is a credible middle-tier option because it is an established outdoor-power-equipment company with both electric and gas pressure washers. Its current U.S. product directory includes electric models listed at 2,300 PSI and 2,700 PSI and provides a path to authorized service centers.

Rank #3
Westinghouse ePX3100v Electric Pressure Washer, 2100 Max PSI 1.76 Max GPM, Built-in Carry Handle, Detachable Foam Cannon, Pro-Style Steel Wand, 3-Nozzle Set, for Cars/Fences/Driveways/Home/Patios
  • Delivers 2100 max PSI and 1.76 max GPM (at lowest pressure), and 1800 rated PSI and 1.2 rated GPM of water flow.
  • Super compact and lightweight at 18 pounds for convenient storage and portability; Built-in handle for easy transportation to wherever your cleaning tasks are
  • Easy-coil nylon braided 20’ hose; Detachable foam cannon to add detergents or chemicals for heavy duty cleaning power on decks, driveways, garage floors, stairs, fencing, patio furniture and vehicles
  • Pump automatically stops when trigger is not engaged to conserve energy and promote pump and motor life
  • Backed by 3-year limited service, labor and parts coverage with nationwide customer service and support network

That service orientation is useful for owners who prefer dealing with an established outdoor-equipment network. Consumer Reports also includes Generac among the pressure-washer brands sold through hardware stores and home centers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Generac does not rank higher because the available evidence is less decisive when comparing the entire brand against SIMPSON, Kärcher, RYOBI, and Greenworks. A particular Generac model may be an excellent purchase, but the brand name alone is not enough to establish best-in-class cleaning performance or durability.

Best use: choose Generac when the specific model has the right pressure and flow for the job, the warranty is clear, and an authorized service option is valuable to you.

6. DEWALT: a model-dependent middle-tier choice

DEWALT’s reputation in power tools should not be treated as proof that every DEWALT pressure washer is superior. The brand is a legitimate contender, but pressure-washer-specific evidence is too model-dependent to justify an automatic top ranking.

DEWALT’s U.S. warranty information states that pressure-washer coverage varies by product and that designated defective parts may be repaired or replaced during the applicable period. That wording makes it especially important to read the warranty document for the exact model rather than relying on a general expectation based on other DEWALT tools.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before purchasing a DEWALT washer, inspect the exact pump and engine, PSI and GPM figures, frame and hose construction, included nozzles, replacement-part situation, and warranty period. A particular model may be a good buy at the right price, especially for someone already invested in DEWALT tools, but the brand name is not a substitute for that inspection.

7. Sun Joe: good for light-duty electric work

Sun Joe is a value-oriented electric brand that makes the most sense for occasional household cleaning. Consumer Reports identifies Sun Joe as an electric pressure-washer brand sold online and through major home-improvement retailers.

Snow Joe and Sun Joe’s warranty statement provides two years of coverage for new products used for residential and personal household purposes. Depending on the warranty terms and the failure, the remedy may involve repair, replacement, a refund, or replacement parts.

  • MULTI-PURPOSE USE: Equipped with 4 quick-connect metal spray nozzles (water-pressure strength:0°>15°> 25°> 40°) and a foam cannon, the LWQ pressure washer is easy to clean objects with complex shapes and structures. The detergent bottle can be filled with chemicals such as bleach, the cleaner will not pass through the pump.
  • CONVENIENT TO USE: LWQ Pressure Washer designs of 2 rollers for easy movement and operation, while the bottom of the body adds an anti-tipping design for overall stability when not in motion. Simple assembly + dual-roller design + anti-tipping base + faucet/bucket water collection system - making it more convenient to use anywhere.
  • EASY TO STORAGE: With power cord hook and nozzle holders, it is easy to access or to store in a garage/pantry after use. In addition, its compact design for easy to store in a garage or pantry when not in use. The LWQ pressure washer is perfect for cleaning concrete, pavement, driveways, patios, decks, sidewalks, RVs, cars, boats, homes, fencing, and more.
  • USER-FRIENDLY & SAFETY: The LWQ pressure washer using high-pressure water flow to clean up the dirt, for saving water and energy and ensuring high cleaning efficiency. Tip: Before turning on the pressure washer, exhaust the air in the high pressure hose as well as the inlet hose, this will ensure that the machine can spray high pressure water stream properly.

That coverage is useful for a budget electric machine, but the use restriction matters. Commercial, rental, and other non-household uses may be excluded or limited. Someone cleaning professionally should not select a Sun Joe simply because its maximum PSI looks competitive with a heavier gas machine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best use: cars, patio furniture, small decks, walkways, and occasional residential cleaning where low purchase cost and simple electric operation matter more than high throughput or professional durability.

8. Craftsman: the riskiest researched choice

Craftsman ranks last in this comparison not because every Craftsman pressure washer is defective, but because the available ownership evidence is more mixed—particularly for the cited gas model.

At the time captured, Lowe’s listed the cited 3,000 PSI gas model with a 3.7 rating from 322 reviews and a 69% recommendation rate. The review material included reports of starting difficulty, leaks, and engine problems. The cited 1,700 PSI electric model performed better in aggregate, with a 4.3 rating from 411 reviews, but individual reviews still mentioned broken fittings, motor failure, and difficulty finding replacement components.

Retailer reviews are directional evidence rather than controlled reliability tests, and Lowe’s warns that review summaries may include incentivized reviews. The defensible conclusion is not that the Craftsman brand is universally unreliable. It is that Craftsman showed the highest ownership-risk signal among the brands reviewed here and deserves more model-level scrutiny before purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best use: consider Craftsman only when the discount is substantial and you have verified the exact model’s warranty, return policy, replacement parts, and current retailer support.

Why PSI alone does not determine the best pressure washer

Maximum PSI is easy to advertise, but it is an incomplete way to compare machines. Consumer Reports gives the greatest weight in its pressure-washer evaluations to how well machines actually clean, which supports looking beyond the largest number on the box.

  • Consider GPM as well as PSI. Pressure describes force; flow affects how quickly the machine can rinse and move debris. A useful comparison considers both the machine’s pressure and its water delivery rather than treating maximum PSI as a complete performance score.
  • Keep machine class visible. Compact electric, battery-powered, homeowner gas, and professional gas machines have different strengths, costs, maintenance needs, and intended workloads.
  • Look at the pump and frame. On gas machines, pump design, engine quality, frame construction, thermal relief, and serviceability can matter more over time than a single peak-pressure rating.
  • Check the working specifications. Confirm whether the advertised PSI and GPM apply to the exact model and whether the figures are presented as maximum or operating output.

What else to compare before buying

1. Match the washer to the work

For occasional car washing, patio furniture, and small outdoor areas, a compact electric machine is usually easier to store and operate. For large driveways, fences, decks, equipment, paint preparation, or frequent cleaning, a higher-throughput gas machine is more appropriate. A homeowner should not pay for professional hardware unless the work justifies the extra noise, weight, maintenance, fuel, and storage requirements.

Best Value
Westinghouse ePX3050 Electric Pressure Washer, 2100 Max PSI 1.76 Max GPM with Foam Cannon and Turbo Nozzle, for Cars/Fences/Driveways/Home/Patios
  • POWERFUL PERFORMANCE: Delivers 2100 max PSI and 1.76 max GPM (at lowest pressure), and 1800 rated PSI and 1.2 rated GPM of water flow. Ideal for decks, sidewalks, siding, fences, garage floors, cars and patio furniture; Foam cannon accessory included
  • DURABLE DESIGN: Hard working AC 120V electric motor and long lasting, maintenance free axial pump with auto stop provides a max of 1.76 gallons of water a minute for every job
  • USER FRIENDLY & COMPACT: Solid construction with low 26″ profile, 5” never flat wheels and 35’ GFCI cord provide easy transportation and maneuverability
  • COMES READY TO CLEAN: 20′ foot abrasion resistant super flex hose with lightweight high pressure spray gun, foam cannon, wand and three quick connect nozzles (15°, 25° and turbo)
  • VERSATILE DESIGN: Compatible with pressure washer accessories such as surface cleaners, undercarriage cleaners and foam cannons with M22 fittings

2. Read the warranty by component

Determine whether the warranty covers the complete unit or only designated parts. Engine, pump, frame, motor, hose, spray gun, and accessories may have different coverage periods. SIMPSON’s PS3228 listing illustrates this separation with distinct commercial coverage for the engine, pump, frame, and accessories. Greenworks separates tool and brushless-motor coverage. DEWALT states that coverage varies by pressure-washer product. Kärcher and Sun Joe publish category-level terms that still include conditions and exclusions.

3. Investigate parts and accessories

Hoses, spray guns, wands, nozzles, surface cleaners, O-rings, pump-protection products, and maintenance consumables can determine whether a washer remains useful after a small component wears out. A machine with excellent headline specifications but scarce fittings or replacement parts may be a poor long-term value.

Availability of pressure-washer replacement parts should be checked before purchase, especially for a discontinued or retailer-specific model. FNA Group’s stated product ecosystem includes pressure washers, pumps, hoses, and replacement parts, while SIMPSON lists accessory and maintenance paths for the PowerShot line. That does not mean every part fits every SIMPSON model; confirm the model number and connection standard.

4. Verify where the exact model is sold

When deciding where to buy a pressure washer, compare the manufacturer’s product page with the retailer listing. Check that the model is current, not discontinued, and backed by a workable return and warranty process. SIMPSON’s product information lists buying options that include Amazon, Home Depot, Lowe’s, Sam’s Club, Tractor Supply, Webstaurant Store, and Zoro, but retailer stock and product availability can change.

5. Treat retailer reviews as clues, not laboratory results

Review counts and ratings can reveal repeated complaints about leaks, starting, fittings, noise, or missing parts. They can also be affected by selection bias, usage differences, and incentivized reviews. Use them to generate questions, then verify the warranty, parts situation, and exact specifications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Safety rules that matter

  • Never aim a pressure stream at a person, pet, or another person nearby.
  • Keep the spray away from live electrical equipment and electrical connections.
  • Do not aim the spray at the pressure washer itself.
  • Use particular caution with a zero-degree nozzle. Consumer Reports identifies zero-degree nozzles as dangerous when misused because the concentrated jet can damage surfaces and cause serious injury.
  • Start with a wider spray pattern and lower pressure when cleaning painted wood, siding, vehicles, soft materials, or unfamiliar surfaces.
  • Keep the machine stable, follow the manufacturer’s startup and shutdown instructions, and use the specified fuel, oil, detergent, and maintenance products.

Best brand by homeowner use case

If your priority is… Start with… Why
Professional or frequent gas cleaning SIMPSON Best combination in this group of heavy-duty hardware, useful flow, and serviceable components
An established electric/residential platform Kärcher Residential focus plus published U.S. electric warranty and Rapid Exchange support
Mainstream homeowner convenience RYOBI Practical features and broad retail visibility, subject to current-model verification
A strong electric warranty signal Greenworks Pro Stated three-year tool and ten-year brushless-motor coverage under the applicable U.S. terms
Recognizable outdoor-power service support Generac Electric and gas offerings with an authorized-service-center path
A DEWALT ecosystem purchase A carefully selected DEWALT model The exact washer matters more than the tool-brand reputation
Low-cost, occasional electric cleaning Sun Joe Residential electric focus and two-year household warranty terms
The lowest ownership risk among the models reviewed Avoid rushing into Craftsman Check model-specific reviews, warranty, parts, and returns especially carefully

Final buying advice

Choose SIMPSON if you need serious gas-powered cleaning and are prepared for the noise, weight, fuel, and maintenance that come with it. Choose Kärcher, RYOBI, or Greenworks for most electric homeowner jobs, with Greenworks particularly attractive when its stated warranty applies to the exact model you are considering. Generac and DEWALT are credible but should be evaluated model by model. Sun Joe is best reserved for lighter-duty budgets, while Craftsman deserves the most caution in this researched set.

Before ordering, confirm the exact model number, PSI and GPM, pump or motor details, warranty scope, included accessories, replacement-part availability, retailer return policy, and current availability. Those checks are more reliable than choosing solely by brand name or maximum PSI.

Evidence note: This ranking is an editorial synthesis based on manufacturer product and warranty information, Consumer Reports’ testing guidance, and retailer product-review evidence available for the models cited. It is not a controlled, brand-wide laboratory reliability test. Product availability, warranty language, retailer ratings, and model numbers can change.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: SIMPSON is the best brand here for demanding gas-powered cleaning. For most electric homeowners, Kärcher, RYOBI, and Greenworks are more sensible starting points. Generac and DEWALT require model-by-model research, Sun Joe fits lighter-duty budgets, and Craftsman carries the greatest ownership-risk signal in the evidence reviewed.
