Yes—but not in the way the headline suggests. Livermore, California’s Centennial Light is a real incandescent bulb installed in 1901 and still glowing in 2026. Guinness World Records recognizes it as the world’s longest-burning light bulb. It has survived because it operates at exceptionally low power, produces very little light, and has enjoyed unusually gentle treatment—not because it is an ordinary household bulb that somehow lasts forever.
After a public 125th-birthday celebration on June 6, 2026, the bulb is approximately 125 years old. The important qualification is that it has operated almost continuously, rather than literally never being switched off.

What is the Centennial Light?
The Centennial Light is a Shelby Electric Company incandescent bulb installed at a Livermore fire station in 1901. It is now displayed at Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department Station 6, 4550 East Avenue, Livermore, California.
It began life as a night light for volunteer firefighters and is now a protected historical landmark. The Guinness World Records account identifies it as the longest-burning light bulb and describes its present operation at approximately 4 watts. The City of Livermore’s visitor information lists daily viewing windows when on-duty personnel are available: 10:00–11:30 a.m. and 3:00–5:00 p.m.

Is it still working?
It still produces light, but “working” needs to be defined carefully.
- Electrically operating: Yes, according to current descriptions.
- Producing useful room illumination: Not really. It is now exceptionally dim.
- Never switched off since 1901: No. It has experienced interruptions, including moves and electrical outages.
“Almost continuously since its installation” is therefore more accurate than “burning continuously for 125 years.” The bulb is also not indestructible. It could fail at any time.
Why has it lasted so long?
A carbon filament
The Centennial Light is generally reported to use a carbon filament, rather than the tungsten filaments found in most later incandescent lamps. Its reported filament construction is described in the Centennial Bulb technical material.
Carbon-filament lamps were inefficient by modern standards, but their construction and operating characteristics could favor long service life under the right conditions.

Very low power and low heat
A filament becomes brighter and whiter as it gets hotter. That also increases the stresses that cause incandescent filaments to fail: material slowly evaporates, weak spots develop, and the filament eventually breaks.
The Centennial Light’s current output is very low. Running at roughly 4 watts means its filament is not being pushed like a normal bright household lamp. The result is a basic engineering trade-off:
- A hotter filament gives more light and a whiter appearance, but tends to have a shorter life.
- A cooler filament lasts longer, but gives less light and is less useful for general illumination.
Its longevity is therefore not free. The bulb has exchanged brightness and practical usefulness for survival.
Continuous operation avoids repeated shocks
Incandescent filaments are particularly vulnerable when a lamp is switched on. A cold filament has lower electrical resistance, so the initial current surge rapidly heats it. Repeated heating and cooling cycles can place more stress on the filament than steady operation.
The Centennial Light has generally been left on rather than switched on and off like a domestic lamp. That does not explain the entire record, but it removes one major source of wear.

That combination—an old carbon-filament design, low operating power, little switching, minimal handling, and unusually favorable conditions—makes the record possible.
Does it prove manufacturers deliberately made bulbs fail?
No. The bulb is evidence that extreme longevity is possible under special conditions, not proof that every ordinary bulb could have delivered the same brightness for a century.
Manufacturers can design lamps for different service lives. But lamp life is connected to brightness, efficiency, color, manufacturing cost, size, reliability, and the electrical system in which the lamp operates. Making a filament last longer generally requires operating it less aggressively, which reduces its usefulness as a light source.
What about the Phoebus cartel?
The Phoebus cartel was an international lightbulb-industry organization formed in the 1920s. It is associated with efforts to standardize incandescent lamp life around 1,000 hours. That history is relevant to the debate over planned obsolescence, but popular explanations often make it too simple.

It operates at 110 - 130VAC and has an E26 Medium base for easy installation. The daylight white light bulbs offer a smooth and steady glow, enhancing the overall lighting effect of any space.
A careful summary is that the cartel helped establish a shorter standardized service life, while lamp makers were also balancing brightness, efficiency, manufacturing cost, reliability, and replacement economics. The existence of the cartel does not show that the Centennial Light could have been a bright, efficient, inexpensive household lamp lasting 125 years.
The U.S. Department of Energy’s history of the light bulb provides useful context on the development and inefficiency of incandescent lighting. More detailed claims about cartel membership, enforcement, fines, or precise agreements should not be inferred from the Centennial Light alone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why don’t modern bulbs last 125 years?
A practical lamp must do more than remain technically lit. It must provide adequate brightness, consume reasonable energy, produce an acceptable color of light, fit standard fixtures, remain affordable, and operate safely and consistently.
Incandescent lamps produce most of their input energy as heat rather than visible light. The Department of Energy notes that incandescent technology is historically inefficient; the theoretical maximum luminous efficacy of visible light is 683 lumens per watt, far above ordinary incandescent performance.
A longer-lived incandescent filament could generally be achieved by making it thicker or running it cooler. But that would normally mean less light, a yellower color, poorer efficiency per useful lumen, or a larger and more expensive lamp. A century of survival is not automatically a better design if the lamp provides almost no useful illumination.

Are LEDs the modern equivalent?
Only in a limited sense. LEDs can provide much more light for the same electricity than traditional incandescent bulbs and commonly have far longer rated lives. But an LED’s life rating usually refers to the time until its light output falls to a specified level—not necessarily the moment it becomes completely dark.
That makes LED longevity different from the Centennial Light’s historical record. An LED is engineered as an efficient modern light source; the Centennial Light is an unusually durable, unusually dim artifact.
The real lesson of the “everlasting” bulb
The Centennial Light demonstrates that a light source can survive for an extraordinary length of time when it is run gently and asked to do very little. It does not demonstrate that a bright, efficient, inexpensive household incandescent bulb could simply have lasted forever.
