At CES 2025, Roborock presented three different answers to a central problem in household robotics: how can a robot do more than simply avoid the mess? The Saros Z70 added a folding robotic arm intended to move selected lightweight objects. The Saros 10 used retractable LiDAR to reach beneath low furniture, while the Saros 10R replaced a conventional LiDAR tower with cameras and 3D time-of-flight sensing.
The Z70 was the headline act, but the larger story was not just a vacuum that could pick up a sock. It was a shift from mapping and cleaning around obstacles toward perception, decision-making and limited physical interaction. The demonstrations were promising, but they did not show a general-purpose household robot—and the original announcement should be understood as a CES 2025 product presentation, not proof that every promised capability works reliably in an ordinary, cluttered home.

The models were introduced during CES 2025 in Las Vegas, which ran from January 7 to 10, 2025. The original Gizmodo coverage was labelled sponsored by Roborock, so its product claims should be read as company-reported specifications and demonstrations rather than independent performance testing.
Saros Z70: a robot vacuum with a robotic arm
The Saros Z70’s defining feature was OmniGrip, a five-axis folding arm integrated into the robot. Roborock said the arm could identify selected objects, pick them up, move them out of the cleaning path and place them in user-designated locations.

At launch, the company claimed a lifting capacity of up to 300 grams, or about 10.5 ounces. The initial object categories included items such as socks, sandals, tissues and towels, with additional recognition types potentially added through software updates. The Z70 also included the functions expected of a premium robot vacuum and mop: vacuuming, mopping, obstacle avoidance, automatic dust disposal, mop washing and mop drying.
That combination makes the Z70 conceptually important. A conventional robot generally maps a room, identifies an obstacle, avoids it and cleans around it. The Z70 was designed to add another option: identify the object, decide whether it is suitable to move, manipulate it and then continue cleaning.

However, a 300-gram lifting limit and a short list of supported objects are significant constraints. The arm does not turn the Z70 into a household butler. It would not be reasonable to assume that it can handle large toys, fragile objects, liquids, sharp items, pet waste, tangled cables or anything wedged under furniture. Soft, partially hidden or awkwardly positioned objects may also be difficult to grasp.
What the CES demonstration proved—and what it did not
CES demonstrations showed the Z70 attempting to recognise and pick up lightweight objects such as socks. Reports noted that the arm did not necessarily succeed on every first attempt and that the range of manipulable objects was limited. Roborock described the retail version as an improvement over the prototype.
That distinction matters. A staged demonstration can show that a robotic action is possible; it cannot establish how often the action succeeds in a naturally cluttered home. The Z70’s arm represented an emerging capability, not evidence that users could stop picking up clutter altogether.
Saros 10: making LiDAR compatible with low furniture
The Saros 10 took a more conventional route. Its RetractSense Navigation system allowed the LiDAR module to retract into the robot’s body. The design aimed to preserve the mapping benefits of laser-based navigation while allowing the robot to lower its profile beneath furniture.

Roborock advertised approximately 22,000 Pa of suction, VibraRise 4.0 mopping, an AdaptiLift chassis and anti-tangle features. The company listed the robot’s height at roughly 7.98 centimetres, or 3.14 inches. Its obstacle-detection system used structured light and cameras.
Low-clearance navigation solves a practical problem that can matter more than a headline suction figure. A robot that cannot physically fit beneath a sofa, bed or cabinet leaves a predictable strip of floor untouched. Retracting the navigation hardware is an attempt to reduce that compromise without abandoning LiDAR altogether.
It is not universal clearance insurance. Thresholds, transition strips, rug edges, rails and uneven flooring vary from home to home. Buyers still need to measure furniture and check the robot’s operating limits rather than assume that a thin specification guarantees access everywhere.
Saros 10R: cameras and 3D sensing instead of a LiDAR tower
The Saros 10R pursued a different solution. It used Roborock’s StarSight Autonomous System 2.0, combining dual-light 3D time-of-flight sensors, RGB cameras, AI-based object recognition and obstacle-avoidance technology such as VertiBeam.
The model was intended to recognise and navigate around cables, irregular furniture and other obstacles that can challenge simpler robot-vacuum systems. It also shared the family’s low-profile design and included advanced vacuuming, mopping, docking and anti-tangle features.
The 10R’s approach can be useful in homes where obstacles change frequently or where a raised LiDAR module would reduce furniture access. But camera-based perception introduces a different set of considerations. Poor lighting, reflective or transparent objects, thin cables, glossy or very dark surfaces and unusual furniture geometry are general edge cases for vision-based robotics. They are not proof that every Saros 10R will fail in those conditions, but they are reasons not to treat “AI obstacle recognition” as infallible.

There is also a privacy trade-off. Buyers should check how cameras, pet recognition, remote viewing, cloud services and stored maps are handled, and what controls the companion app provides.
The real significance: from avoidance to limited manipulation
The Z70 suggested a broader progression in domestic robotics:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Perception: recognising an object rather than treating it as an anonymous obstruction.
- Planning: deciding whether to avoid, move or revisit it.
- Manipulation: physically interacting with the object.
- Organisation: potentially placing it in a user-defined location.
- Coordination: combining object handling with floor cleaning.
That is a meaningful change in ambition. Yet “AI-powered” should be understood narrowly here. The systems rely on sensors, trained recognition models, supported object classes, software rules and the conditions in the room. They do not understand a home in the human sense, and they cannot be assumed to learn continuously or reason about every object they encounter.
The less dramatic technologies may also matter more in day-to-day use. Better obstacle recognition, low-clearance navigation, threshold handling, anti-tangle systems and more capable docks can reduce interruptions without requiring a robotic arm. The question for buyers is therefore not which model has the most futuristic feature, but which limitation in their home causes the most cleaning failures.
What the Saros robots could not promise
They do not replace tidying
The Z70 could address selected lightweight obstructions, but persistent clutter remains a human task. Large toys, cables, fragile objects, wet spills and hazardous items should not be left for a robot to interpret.
Automation still requires maintenance
Self-emptying and self-washing docks reduce routine work but do not eliminate it. Owners still need to refill clean water or connect plumbing where supported, empty or manage dirty water, clean mop pads, inspect brushes, wash filters and wipe sensors and the dock. A robotic arm adds another mechanical component that may need cleaning, troubleshooting or repair.

Navigation depends on the home
AdaptiLift systems and low-profile bodies can help with thresholds and furniture, but no design guarantees compatibility with every floor transition. Measure low furniture, inspect threshold heights and consider rugs, rails and changes between flooring materials.
More sensors mean more software dependence
Object recognition, pet-related functions and future recognition categories may depend on firmware and app updates. Buyers should confirm which features are available on the shipping software in their region rather than relying on a CES demonstration or a future-looking promise.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Questions to ask before treating a CES feature as a buying advantage
- How many object categories does the shipping model support?
- What is the real success rate when objects are partly hidden, soft, wet or badly positioned?
- Does moving objects reduce cleaning interruptions, or does the robot need repeated attempts?
- What happens after a misidentification?
- How much additional maintenance does the arm or advanced dock require?
- Are cameras active continuously, and what privacy controls are available?
- Which functions work locally, and which depend on cloud services?
- Can the robot handle the home’s stairs, thresholds, rugs and low furniture?
- Does the price premium produce more usable cleaning, or mainly a more impressive specification sheet?
Roborock’s claimed suction ratings should also be treated as manufacturer specifications, not complete measures of cleaning performance. A higher Pa number does not by itself prove better pickup on carpets, hard floors or edges, and specifications should not be compared across brands without standardised testing.
Which model addressed which buyer problem?
Conceptually, the Saros Z70 suited readers most interested in robotic manipulation and willing to accept first-generation limitations. It was the most visually innovative model, but also the one that required the greatest proof of reliability.
The Saros 10 was the clearer fit for homes where low furniture was the main obstacle and where the buyer preferred a familiar LiDAR-based navigation approach alongside advanced mopping and docking.
The Saros 10R was aimed at people who valued obstacle recognition and a low profile, particularly in homes with cables, pets, irregular furniture or frequently changing layouts. Its camera-based sensing made privacy preferences part of the purchase decision.

For many households, earlier Saros models or Roborock’s Qrevo range may be more sensible if automated vacuuming and mopping matter more than experimental manipulation. Buyers should compare specific models rather than assume that every product in a brand family has the same navigation, mopping or obstacle-avoidance technology. A conventional cordless vacuum remains the better tool for stairs, upholstery, spills, deep corners and targeted cleaning.
What happened after CES 2025?
The three Saros models were not the end of Roborock’s product development. By 2026, the company was presenting newer products and concepts, including the Saros 20, Qrevo Curv 2 Flow and the stair-capable Saros Rover concept. Roborock’s CES and product hub and its CES 2026 newsroom announcement describe those later developments.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Those products should not be confused with the CES 2025 trio. They show that Roborock continued exploring greater mobility, automation and home coverage, but they do not retroactively prove that the Z70’s arm became a fully general-purpose household solution.
Bottom line
The Saros Z70 was significant because it demonstrated a robot vacuum attempting to interact with its environment rather than simply avoid it. Its OmniGrip arm, 300-gram claimed capacity and narrow initial object categories made it a compelling glimpse of future domestic robotics—but not a replacement for tidying or independent proof of reliable everyday performance.
The Saros 10 and 10R addressed more immediate problems: getting under low furniture and recognising difficult obstacles. For practical buyers, those navigation improvements may matter more than the Z70’s headline-grabbing arm. The broader lesson from CES 2025 is that robot vacuums are moving toward perception and manipulation, but the value of that future depends on reliability, maintenance, privacy, software support and performance in real homes—not on the most impressive demonstration on a show floor.
