What is confirmed about the 2026 finalists?
The prize’s official homepage displayed a “5 Finalists” section, while the accessible 2026 announcement identified the 25-project selection rather than the five finalists. No project names or descriptions can be reliably attributed to the 2026 final stage from those materials. The 2024 finalists are from a different edition and should not be mistaken for this year’s list.
The European Prize for Urban Public Space is an initiative of Barcelona’s Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (CCCB). Its 2026 rules describe a free, open competition held in two rounds: a first selection of 25 works, followed by five finalists competing in the second round. The award recognizes public-space creation, recovery and improvement projects completed from 1 January 2021 through 31 December 2025 in the Council of Europe geographic area. How did the 2026 selection reach the finalist stage?
The jury met in Barcelona on 2–3 July 2026 and selected 25 projects to advance. The official announcement says 381 projects from 38 countries were submitted; the selected projects come from 14 countries. It describes them as reflecting “a wide diversity of scales, typologies and intervention contexts.” See the official 2026 jury announcement.

The jury is chaired by Eva Prats and includes Angelika Fitz, Monika Konrad, Inês Lobo, Bas Smets and Philip Ursprung. Lluís Ortega is listed as jury secretary in the rules. These are the members named for the 2026 competition, not a claim about the jury for another edition. The official rules list the jury.
What will the jury assess?
The rules set out a broad assessment of how public-space projects work as places for civic life, rather than a single design or construction metric. Their criteria include:
- Urban and architectural quality, public vocation and multidisciplinary collaboration.
- Civic function, historical memory and the relationship between a place and its surroundings.
- Climate response, mobility, resource use and resilience.
- Social inequalities and physical or symbolic barriers.
- Connections between the city and the natural environment, and the recovery of a place’s latent qualities.
Once the official project descriptions are available, these criteria offer a practical way to compare the finalists: identify the local challenge, what changed in the public realm, who can use it, how the design addresses inclusion and ecology, and how it relates to local memory and landscape. They describe the jury’s evaluation framework, not a ranking or prediction of the winner.

Are the 2024 finalists the same projects?
No. The 2024 edition had ten finalists across two categories, General and Seafronts. Its official announcement named projects including Park at the Warsaw Uprising Mound, Boca de la Mina Promenade, Urban Forest and Sea Park; they belong to the earlier competition and are not evidence of the 2026 finalist identities.
