European hinges are concealed cup hinges fitted to the inside of cabinet doors, so the hardware is hidden when the door is closed. To choose one that fits, match the hinge to the cabinet construction and door position first, then confirm opening clearance, cup drilling, mounting compatibility, and closing behavior against the exact model’s specifications.
What is a European hinge?
“European hinge,” “concealed hinge,” and “cup hinge” are overlapping names for a common cabinet-door hinge. The hinge’s cup fits into a drilled recess in the door, while its arm and mounting plate attach the door to the cabinet. Sugatsune uses all three terms for concealed hinges fitted inside swing doors. The category is not a single interchangeable design. Hinges that look similar can require different cabinet construction, door placement, drilling, plates, or clearances. Choose by the actual installation, not by the label alone.
Start with the cabinet and door position
Identify face-frame or frameless construction
A face-frame cabinet has a frame across the front of the cabinet opening; a frameless cabinet does not. Hinge ranges can be made specifically for one construction type. For example, Blum identifies its COMPACT concealed hinge range as being for face-frame cabinets, with partial- and full-overlay options. That does not establish compatibility with frameless cabinets or with every face-frame arrangement. Check the COMPACT model information for the specific configuration.

Choose full overlay, half overlay, or inset
- Full overlay: The closed door sits in front of and covers the cabinet side.
- Half overlay: Two doors share a center partition, and each covers part of it.
- Inset: The door sits within the cabinet opening rather than in front of the side.
These positions change the hinge geometry and the space needed around the door. A hinge suitable for an overlay door should not be assumed to work for an inset door. Hettich’s fitting catalogue explains overlay, half-overlay, inset, and reveal as distinct arrangements; its August 2022 catalogue dimensions should be checked against the current specification for any particular product. Check the dimensions and movement before buying
Once the cabinet type and door position are clear, compare the candidate hinge with the door and opening. A product name or nominal cup size is not enough to confirm fit.

- Door thickness and material: Confirm the hinge is suitable for the door’s thickness and material, and that its cup can be drilled without breaking through the door face.
- Opening angle and clearance: Check how far the door must open and whether it will clear the cabinet, adjacent doors, walls, handles, or other obstructions. A larger opening angle is not useful if the door collides with nearby construction.
- Cup drilling: Verify cup diameter, drilling pattern, and required depth for the exact hinge model.
- Mounting plate and fixing: Match the hinge arm, mounting plate, fixing method, and cabinet-side drilling or fastening requirements.
- Adjustment: Check what adjustment the model provides and whether it is sufficient to align the door in the installed cabinet.
- Closing action: Decide whether the door should use soft-close, push-to-open, or a catch, and confirm that the hinge and any associated hardware support the intended behavior.
Specifications vary even within a product family. Titus lists different opening angles, cup drilling patterns, arm positions, and fixing methods in its T-type concealed hinge range. Compare the relevant Titus model details rather than relying on the family name.
A practical selection checklist
- Record whether the cabinet is face-frame or frameless.
- Identify whether the door is full overlay, half overlay, or inset.
- Measure the door thickness and note its material.
- Determine the opening angle needed and check for nearby obstructions.
- Compare the hinge’s cup dimensions and drilling pattern with the door.
- Confirm mounting-plate compatibility, fixing method, and adjustment provisions.
- Select the required closing behavior, then confirm every dimension and compatibility detail in the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact model.
What to verify for a 35 mm European cabinet hinge
A “35 mm European cabinet hinge” is a useful product-category description, not proof that a particular hinge fits a particular door. Before purchasing, confirm the stated cup diameter against the actual product specification, along with the cabinet construction, overlay or inset arrangement, drilling pattern, door thickness, and plate compatibility. Do not infer any of these details from the 35 mm description alone.

A concealed-hinge boring jig may help when drilling cup recesses, but the right jig depends on the hinge’s drilling requirements; no particular jig is specified here. Follow the hinge manufacturer’s installation instructions and verify the layout before drilling.
