A newly seeded grassed waterway can lose soil before its vegetation is established. In a 2015 report from central Iowa, farmer Brad Plunkett described covering a graded, seeded waterway with a straw erosion-control blanket and staking it down to protect the surface while grass grew. It is a practical example—not a controlled trial or a universal specification—and resilient waterways also depend on planning for the wider landscape’s water flow.
Why a new grassed waterway can wash out
Seeded soil is exposed until vegetation takes hold. If runoff reaches the unfinished surface during that period, it can carry soil away and undermine the effort to establish grass. In the Iowa case report, Plunkett said he began using erosion-control blankets in 2011 after earlier difficulty getting grass established before heavy rains. The report presents his experience, not a controlled comparison proving that a blanket will prevent washouts on every site.
How the Iowa case used a straw erosion-control blanket
Cover the graded and seeded surface
The March 2015 Successful Farming / Agriculture.com report describes thin straw mats with biodegradable netting on both sides. The crew unrolled the blanket over a newly graded and seeded waterway, then staked it in place. Plunkett used an ATV to unroll the material.
Let the grass establish beneath the cover
The report describes the blanket as protecting soil from runoff and acting as mulch that holds moisture while grass grows through it. Plunkett called the blankets “an insurance policy” and said, “We can’t afford to have our soil wash down the river.” Those statements express the farmer’s rationale in the case report; they are not independent performance findings.

Read the reported figures as historical context
The 2015 article reported that Plunkett and his crew installed blankets on more than 50 farms per year across Iowa. It also gave a material-and-installation estimate of 7¢ to 8¢ per square foot, separate estimated grading labor of $150 per hour, and seed at $75 per acre. These are dated figures from the article, not current quotes or prices. The same report described rolls 16 feet wide and 560 feet long and a blanket designed to withstand a flash flood event resulting from a 2-inch downpour. Those dimensions and the rainfall statement are historical product details and a design claim; the report does not provide independent test results or establish current product specifications.
What to evaluate before choosing a method
The case report does not rank blanket products or compare establishment methods. For a specific project, evaluate the site and installation requirements with locally applicable expertise rather than treating the Iowa example as a one-size-fits-all design.
Rank #2
- These fast growing grass seeds are suitable for areas that receive 4 to 6 hours of daily sunlight
- Runoff exposure: Consider the slope and how water enters and moves through the waterway.
- Ground conditions: Account for soil and drainage conditions at the site.
- Establishment period: Consider how long vegetation may need to take hold and what could happen if runoff arrives in the meantime.
- Materials and installation: Check the blanket’s durability and degradation characteristics, the labor required to install and stake it, and current installed costs.
The report does not identify a current blanket model or verify present-day product availability. Confirm specifications, suitability, and pricing with suppliers and project professionals before selecting materials.

Plan at the catchment scale
The UK Climate Change Risk Assessment’s natural environment and assets chapter identifies floodplain and hydrological-system restoration, ecological networks, and catchment-scale management as potential adaptation actions. It notes that ecological restoration can take decades, making early planning important. This broad UK guidance provides landscape context; it is not a specification for an Iowa farm project.

Work with local hydrology in urban settings
Queensland’s urban design principles advise working with established ecological and hydrological systems and using water-sensitive urban design to manage surface runoff and support connected green corridors and waterways. That is urban-design guidance, distinct from the agricultural blanket installation described in Iowa. For any location, follow applicable local requirements and site conditions.
