In hot weather, add water and cooling breaks: preventing UV exposure and preventing heat illness are related, but they are not the same.
How do I protect myself from the sun while gardening?
Gardening counts as outdoor sun exposure. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) warns that working outdoors in sunlight can increase the risk of sunburn and skin cancer. UVA and UVB radiation can damage skin, and UV exposure can harm eyes. NIOSH: Sun Exposure at Work; CDC: Ultraviolet Radiation.
- Check the conditions and plan the work. Sunlight UV is generally highest in summer and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., according to NIOSH. This is broad guidance, not a location-specific forecast, and risk is not absent at other times. Move long or strenuous tasks to earlier or later hours when practical.
- Use shade as one layer. Work under a shelter or umbrella, or take breaks indoors or in shade. Shade does not replace clothing or sunscreen; UV can still reach exposed skin.
- Cover skin and protect your eyes. Wear clothing that covers arms and legs, a brimmed hat, and wraparound sunglasses that block UVA and UVB.
- Apply sunscreen to exposed skin. Use at least SPF 30+ for prolonged outdoor work, apply it before going outside, and reapply during the task.
- Build in water and cooling breaks. Warm-weather exertion creates a separate heat risk. Drink water regularly and pause somewhere cool when needed.
Cloud cover is not a reliable reason to skip protection: outdoor workers can still be exposed to UV on cloudy days. Use conditions and the length of the task—not whether the sun feels hot or looks bright—as cues to protect yourself. NIOSH: Sun Exposure at Work.
What should I wear gardening in the sun?
Clothing that covers skin
Choose tightly woven fabric that covers your arms and legs; clothing labeled for UV protection can make its protection clearer. NIOSH notes that dark, tightly woven clothing is more protective than light, loosely woven clothing. Ordinary long sleeves should not be assumed to have a stated UPF rating. CDC recommends protective clothing even when you are working in shade. NIOSH: Sun Exposure at Work; CDC: Ultraviolet Radiation.

A hat and sunglasses
A wide-brim hat that shades all the way around helps protect the ears and back of the neck, areas a baseball cap may leave exposed. Choose sunglasses that block both UVA and UVB; a wraparound style also reduces exposure from the sides. These protections still matter when crouching or working beneath open sky.
Balance UV coverage with heat comfort
Clothing choices for UV and heat do not always point to the same fabric or color. NIOSH favors dark, tightly woven fabric for UV protection; CDC advises outdoor workers in hot conditions to wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing and a brimmed hat. Choose comfortable clothing that covers skin and, where available, has a stated UV rating. If you are working hard in heat, take cooling breaks rather than relying on a clothing choice alone. CDC: Heat and Outdoor Workers.

Do I need sunscreen on a cloudy day?
Yes. Clouds do not eliminate UV exposure, and sunscreen is still useful on skin left uncovered by clothing, including when you work in shade. For prolonged outdoor work, NIOSH recommends sunscreen of at least SPF 30+. Follow the product label, since performance depends on applying it properly and on conditions such as perspiration. NIOSH: Sun Exposure at Work; CDC: Ultraviolet Radiation.
A practical application routine
- Apply sunscreen at least 20 minutes before sun exposure, following the product label.
- Use enough to cover exposed skin. NIOSH’s outdoor-worker guidance recommends at least one ounce per application.
- Pay particular attention to the ears, scalp, lips, neck, tops of feet, and backs of hands.
- Reapply at least every two hours, and after heavy sweating or swimming. Do not treat SPF as a guaranteed number of hours of protection.
Gardening can involve sweating, and sweat affects sunscreen performance. Reapplication and the product’s directions matter throughout a long task.

How can I reduce heat risk while gardening?
Sun protection does not prevent heat illness. CDC notes that outdoor workers are more likely to become dehydrated and experience heat illness. During hot weather, schedule demanding work for cooler hours where possible, drink water before you feel thirsty, and use breaks to cool down. CDC: Heat and Outdoor Workers.
- Keep water available and drink regularly rather than waiting for thirst.
- Pause in a cool place, in shade or indoors, to lower exertion and body heat.
- If you feel faint or weak, stop activity and get to a cool place. CDC advises immediate medical care for symptoms of heat-related illness.
NIOSH and CDC guidance address different goals: UV protection favors tightly woven fabric, while CDC’s hot-weather advice favors loose, lightweight, light-colored clothes. Adapt your clothing to the conditions, and make cooling breaks part of the plan.

Can medicines make me more sensitive to the sun?
Some medicines can increase sun sensitivity. NIOSH lists thiazides, diuretics, tetracycline, doxycycline, sulfa antibiotics, and some NSAIDs such as ibuprofen among examples; CDC also notes that some oral and topical medicines and cosmetics may increase sensitivity. Check the information for your medicine and ask a pharmacist or healthcare professional if you are concerned. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without medical advice. NIOSH: Sun Exposure at Work; CDC: Ultraviolet Radiation.
If you have a higher personal risk or notice skin changes, ask a healthcare professional for advice suited to your situation.
