Essential Nightshade Plants for Your June Garden

Tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, potatoes, and tomatillos are edible nightshade crops, but June planting depends on your region’s calendar and growing conditions.

Tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, potatoes, and tomatillos are edible nightshade crops to consider—but June alone cannot tell you what to plant. Latitude, local heat, frost timing, and crop calendars change the answer. In north Florida, for example, tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants may be producing in June even as new plantings are limited to heat-tolerant crops. Check your local cooperative extension planting calendar before buying starts or sowing seeds.

Which nightshade crops belong in an edible garden?

NC State Extension groups eggplant, bell and chile peppers, potatoes, tomatillos, and tomatoes among common vegetable nightshades. They are warm-season crops, but the part harvested differs: potatoes are grown for their tubers; tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, and tomatillos for their fruits. See NC State Extension’s vegetable gardening guidance for crop-specific growing information.

Eggplants come in a broad range of edible shapes and colors. UF/IFAS notes that plants may need support, and that Florida planting windows vary by region. Its schedule is a useful illustration of why “plant in June” is not a universal instruction:

Florida region UF/IFAS eggplant transplanting windows
North Florida February to March or August
Central Florida January to February or August to September
South Florida August to February

These are Florida-specific windows, not a calendar for other states or countries. Consult UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions’ eggplant guide and your local extension calendar for dates, spacing, irrigation, and cultivar recommendations.

What does June mean for planting?

In a north Florida example, UF/IFAS Extension Duval County describes May and June as peak spring production weeks for tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants. As temperatures rise, gardeners monitor irrigation; high nighttime temperatures can stop many large-fruited tomato varieties from producing. The county guidance limits new May and June planting there to heat-tolerant crops. This is a local example, not general advice for the United States or other regions. Read UF/IFAS Extension Duval County’s May and June garden guidance, posted May 2, 2026, then check the calendar for your own area.

How should you choose a crop and site?

Match the crop to your region’s planting window and expected summer conditions, then consider what you want to harvest, how much space is available, whether plants need support, and likely pest pressure. The available sources do not provide a consistent cross-crop comparison of harvest times or heat tolerance, so there is no evidence-based universal ranking of the “best” nightshade for June.

For fruiting crops such as eggplant, peppers, and tomatoes, NC State Extension emphasizes ample light and good drainage. Start with a sunny site where water drains well; use local extension advice for crop-specific spacing, watering, and varieties. Eggplant prefers evenly moist soil, and excessive heat or dryness can affect fruit flavor. Harvest eggplants when they are large and glossy; overripe fruits may turn dull and yellow, according to UF/IFAS.

How do you manage nightshade pests and rotate crops?

UF/IFAS lists aphids, flea beetles, caterpillars, thrips, spider mites, and leafminers as potential eggplant pests; spider mites and leafminers can seriously damage young plants. Monitor plants early and use integrated pest management rather than assuming one treatment works in every garden. Rotation, cleaning tools, and appropriate irrigation can help prevent disease problems from becoming serious. See the UF/IFAS eggplant guidance for further detail.

When space permits, University of Delaware Cooperative Extension recommends avoiding crops from the same family in the same spot more than once in three years to help break disease and insect cycles. Tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, and eggplants are all nightshades, so swapping one for another does not count as rotating to a different plant family. Consult University of Delaware Cooperative Extension’s vegetable gardening basics.

Are all parts of nightshade plants safe to eat?

No. “Nightshade” names a broad plant family; it does not mean every plant in the family, or every part of an edible crop, is food. UC ANR advises caution with Solanum and nightshade species, supervision around children and pets, and avoiding ingestion of food-crop leaves and stems. Keep children and pets away from unidentified plants, and do not eat wild berries based on a casual identification.

Distinguish cultivated vegetables from wild or ornamental plants. See UC ANR’s guidance on Solanum species and NC State Extension Gardener Plant Toolbox’s American black nightshade profile.
