The Escuela Ecologica Saludable Initiative was a community-led school and neighborhood design effort at Pitágoras School in Lomas de Zapallal, northern Lima. Its best-documented result is a 600-square-meter park that turned a barren desert-school site into a shaded, planted place for classes, play, gathering and environmental learning. Parents, teachers, children and an interdisciplinary University of Washington team designed and built it together.
The project account describes drip irrigation, a hand-washing greywater system, more than 200 trees and shrubs, construction in just over two weeks and a reported cost below $5,000. Those figures come from the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) award narrative and are not independent audits. The sources document historical work, not the park’s present condition.

What the Escuela Ecologica Saludable Initiative was
Escuela Ecologica Saludable combined community infrastructure, school-based education and interdisciplinary research. The work was based at Pitágoras School No. 8183 in Lomas de Zapallal, a northern Lima district that the ASLA project narrative described as an urban-slum setting within a largely barren desert landscape. The initiative was intended to examine environmental, economic and human-health effects alongside the physical improvements, rather than treat a landscape project as a stand-alone construction job.
After a year of community-based research, University of Washington professors and eight students worked with local parents, teachers and children. The student team represented landscape architecture, engineering, environmental science and public health. That mix shaped both the design and the questions the team hoped to evaluate: how a school landscape could support learning and social life, conserve scarce water and create possible economic and health benefits.

Historical context in the project narrative should be treated carefully. It referred to more than a third of Lima’s then-estimated nine million residents and included a projection of 16 million people by 2050, but the surfaced account does not identify the estimate or projection year. Those figures are background from the period of the project, not current demographic statistics.
What was built at Pitágoras School
A 600-square-meter central park
Four participatory workshops informed a 600-square-meter park linking the school’s central gathering area with the primary school. The design added an outdoor setting where students could meet, play and study instead of leaving the center as bare ground. A shaded seating area was planned for classes, rest and play, while the planting was arranged as an ecological learning landscape rather than decorative lawn.
Recommended Free Tools
The ASLA narrative reports more than 200 native, drought-tolerant, productive or ornamental trees and shrubs. In this context, “productive” describes species selected for potential useful yields; it does not establish that the park generated a measured income or food supply. Plant selection also reflected the practical constraints of a dry site, where water demand and survival are central construction and maintenance concerns.
Local materials and building skills
Local craftspeople contributed construction knowledge, and the project used locally mined “piedra de laja,” a flat natural stone, in what the account presents as a durable, low-cost building system. Using local skills and materials reduced the distance between design and construction: people who would live with the park could help shape details, build elements and maintain them after the university group left.
The source does not provide structural drawings, stone dimensions, soil tests, bills of quantities or a specification for the building system. It therefore supports an account of the approach, not a code-compliant construction recipe for another site.
How the community participated
Design before construction
Participation began before the first path or planting bed was installed. Parents, teachers and children took part in four workshops that informed the park plan. This process allowed the school community to identify the need for shade, gathering space, play and ecological teaching within the limits of the site.

Hands-on construction
The project account says well over 300 parents worked alongside university students to grade the site, lay paths, plant trees and install irrigation. During construction, workshops covered worm composting, vegetable gardening and tree planting. These activities made the park a teaching project as well as a physical improvement, linking daily school use with soil care, food growing and water management.
Work that continued after the students left
Community involvement did not end when the visiting students departed. The account reports that local participants continued working and put up temporary protective fences around trees. Such measures are important on a busy school site, where young plants can be damaged by foot traffic, play or construction activity. The historical narrative does not quantify how long those fences remained or describe a later maintenance organization.
How the park addressed water
The project described two different water-saving approaches. One delivered water directly to plants through drip irrigation; the other reused water from hand washing. The narrative explains the design intent but gives no flow rates, volume savings, filtration tests, maintenance schedule or measured plant-survival comparison.
| Approach | Water source | Delivery method | What the account establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Drip irrigation | A fresh irrigation supply; the source narrative does not specify its origin | Water delivered through drip lines to planting areas | The park included a drip system as a water-conservation measure | No quantified reduction in consumption, pressure requirement, emitter spacing or maintenance data |
| Greywater reuse | Water collected from hand washing | Hand-washing water passed through a sand filter into porous ceramic vessels that released water slowly into the park | The project used filtration and porous vessels to reuse hand-washing water for gradual irrigation | No engineering specification, treatment verification, public-health approval, flow rate or measured savings |
For a construction professional, the distinction matters. A drip line and a greywater installation are not interchangeable products. Drip irrigation requires a suitable supply, pressure control and routine checks for clogged emitters. The greywater system adds collection, filtration and vessel maintenance, and its safety depends on the water source, treatment design and local regulations. The Pitágoras account records what was built there; it is not current public-health guidance or a universal design standard.
Construction time, participation and reported cost
The ASLA project narrative reports that the park was built in just over two weeks for under $5,000, with well over 300 parents participating. These are project-account figures, not independently audited measurements, and the source does not state whether the cost included design, donated labor, materials supplied by partners, travel or later maintenance.
The short schedule is best understood alongside the preparation that preceded it. A year of community-based research, four workshops, local craft knowledge and a defined 600-square-meter footprint created the conditions for an intensive build. A rapid on-site phase does not mean that the project required little planning; it means much of the social and design work happened before construction began.

What outcomes are documented—and what remains unknown
Historical observations
A follow-up included in the award narrative reported that the vegetation was prospering and that two irrigation pots had cracked. This is a project-era observation. It indicates that the authors saw healthy growth at that point and identified a small number of damaged ceramic vessels, but it does not establish present-day plant survival, water performance or maintenance quality.
Planned evaluation without published results in the reviewed accounts
The team said it planned quantitative assessment of irrigation, plant survival and people’s perceptions of the park. The sources available for this article do not provide those results. Consequently, no measured water saving, health improvement, educational gain or economic return can be attributed to the project from these accounts alone.
The narrative mentions potential economic benefits from local materials and productive tree species. “Potential” is important: the account does not document income, operating-cost reductions or a completed economic analysis. The same caution applies to environmental and health aims. They were part of the initiative’s intended evaluation framework, not reported findings.
Awards and project credits
The park received a 2012 Student Community Service Honor Award in the ASLA awards listing. Separately, University of Washington News reported on 20 June 2012 that the project won a 2012 Great Places award from the Environmental Design Research Association. These are two distinct recognitions, reported by two different institutional sources.
The ASLA record names student award recipients Leann Andrews and Jonathan Jue of the University of Washington, with Benjamin Spencer and Susan Bolton as faculty advisors. Its credits list the University of Washington, Architecture Without Borders: Seattle, Pitagoras School No. 8183, the APAFA Parents Organization, Fundación San Marcos and the Municipality of Lomas de Zapallal among the project partners. Listing these organizations identifies documented roles and affiliations; it does not imply that every partner financed, built or currently operates the park.

That classroom project encountered administrative complications, political circumstances, a contractor’s withdrawal and rising costs. By the time of the abstract, construction was nearing completion and community tensions had eased. The abstract does not confirm final completion or present-day condition. These delivery problems belong to the classroom record and should not be transferred to the park, which has its own construction narrative and reported schedule.
Is the Pitágoras park still there?
The available sources cannot answer that question with confidence. They document the park’s historical design, construction and a follow-up in which vegetation was prospering and two irrigation pots had cracked. They do not provide an independent, current site inspection, recent photographs, a maintenance log or verified measurements of today’s irrigation and plant survival.
The accurate conclusion is therefore limited: the park was built and was reported to be functioning during the historical follow-up, but its present condition is unverified. The same caution applies to the initiative as a whole; the records describe past work and do not establish that it remains an active, independently operating program today.
What construction teams can learn from the documented process
Start with users and site constraints
The Pitágoras process put community research and workshops ahead of construction. For another school or neighborhood project, that sequence can reveal where shade, circulation, play, teaching and maintenance must fit before a plan is finalized. It also exposes constraints—such as water availability and protection of new planting—that may be missed in a purely visual design exercise.
Match infrastructure to verifiable water conditions
The two systems demonstrate different levels of complexity. A drip network may be appropriate where a reliable, treated supply and routine maintenance are available. Greywater reuse requires a clearly defined source, filtration and safe handling. Before copying either approach, a project team would need local plumbing, environmental and public-health requirements, plus an operations plan that identifies who cleans filters, checks emitters and replaces damaged vessels.
Make maintenance part of the build
Temporary tree fences, composting instruction and continued community work show that handover was not treated as the end of construction. A practical plan should assign responsibility for watering, weeding, replacing plants, repairing irrigation and protecting paths. The historical account does not state that such a formal plan existed, so this is a lesson for future projects rather than a claim about Pitágoras.
Measure the outcomes that matter
The initiative’s proposed evaluation categories—irrigation, plant survival and perceptions—are useful because they connect physical work to performance. A comparable project could establish a baseline, record water use, track plant survival by season and survey students and teachers at defined intervals. The Pitágoras sources do not report those measurements, so they cannot be used to calculate a benchmark or guarantee results elsewhere.
Why the project remains significant
Pitágoras School’s park is significant less as a packaged technology than as an example of coordinated design and construction. Its documented elements—community workshops, local stone and craft skills, drought-aware planting, shade, drip irrigation, greywater reuse and educational activities—were assembled around the daily life of a particular school. The account shows how a modest physical intervention can connect landscape, engineering, public health and education, while also showing why claims about long-term performance require follow-up evidence that these records do not supply.
