An escape door system is designed to let an access-controlled door serve two needs at once: authorize entry and exit during normal operation, then release reliably when people must evacuate. Abloy UK’s Escape Door System (EDS), described in a Building Design + Construction article published on September 24, 2018, combines a fail-unlocked blocking element, intelligent control and a manual trigger for that purpose. The article links the system to BS EN 13637 and describes dynamic lockdown, but it does not establish the products’ current availability, certification or suitability for a particular building. Those points require current manufacturer documentation and project-specific review.
What an escape door system is
Conventional access control is optimized to keep unauthorized people out. An escape door has the opposite life-safety obligation: anyone who needs to leave must be able to do so quickly, including during a fire, security incident or power fault. An electronically controlled escape door system joins those objectives instead of treating them as separate installations.

The 2018 article about Abloy UK’s EDS presents it for doors on escape routes where read-in/read-out access control is specified. “Read-in” means the system controls entry into a protected area; “read-out” means it also records or authorizes movement in the other direction. The result is a door that can remain part of a building’s security plan without making the escape route dependent on a card reader, software decision or a person finding a key.
The article’s description is a historical product account, not a current approval. A design team should confirm the latest terminal, controller, lock, fire-alarm interface, wiring and certification documents before placing the system on a specification.

Why the combination matters
A locked door on an escape route creates a conflict between security and evacuation. Leaving the door permanently unlocked can undermine zoning, occupancy control and audit trails. EDS is presented as a way to resolve that conflict with a controlled locking state during normal use and an emergency release path that does not require mechanical input at the door’s blocking element.
Caroline Jones, identified in the article as Abloy UK’s OEM Product Manager, summarized the risk this way: “The importance of emergency escape systems is often underestimated because such events are relatively rare, but getting it wrong can lead to the loss of life, substantial fines and even custodial sentences.” “Relatively rare” is a qualitative observation, not a measured incident rate; the practical point is that a low-frequency event still requires a dependable, tested release strategy.
How the EDS operating concept works
The article identifies three operating elements. Their exact part numbers, wiring and behavior must be checked against current technical documentation, but the functional relationship is clear.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →| Element | Function described in the 2018 article | Design question to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Fail-unlocked blocking element | Releases the door without requiring mechanical input when the system is commanded to unlock. | What lock or blocking device is approved for the door, and what happens on loss of power or a fault? |
| Intelligent control | Coordinates the locking state and can connect to a fire-alarm system or other building-control systems. | Which interfaces, signal types, supervision arrangements and cause-and-effect rules are supported by the current controller? |
| Trigger unit | Uses a key switch and push button to tell the controller to release the locking mechanism for escape. | Where must the trigger be mounted, who is authorized to reset it, and how is activation indicated and logged? |
Normal access
During normal operation, the access-control system can manage authorized movement in both directions. A reader, credential decision or other approved input determines whether the door remains secured or is released. The 2018 article does not provide reader types, credential formats, software features or event-log specifications, so those should not be assumed from the EDS name alone.

Emergency release
When the trigger unit is operated, the controller is instructed to release the locking mechanism. The article specifically describes a key switch and push button. That arrangement separates an intentional emergency command from ordinary access requests and gives the building operator a defined point for testing and controlled reset.
Fire-alarm or building-control input
The article says intelligent control can connect to a fire alarm or other building-control systems. That statement establishes an intended integration capability, not compatibility with every panel or protocol. The project team must document whether the fire strategy calls for immediate release, staged release, a monitored input, a supervised circuit or another sequence, then confirm that the selected current equipment supports it.
Fail-unlocked behavior
The blocking element is described as fail-unlocked. That phrase should be treated as a life-safety design characteristic, not as permission to omit a power-failure analysis. Engineers still need to establish the normal and standby power sources, cable routes, fire performance, battery autonomy, fault indications, reset behavior and what occupants experience if one component fails.
BS EN 13637 and the limits of the 2018 claim
The article says EDS combines the three components required for BS EN 13637, which it identifies as covering electronically controlled escape door systems for doors along escape routes. A standard reference in a trade article does not, by itself, prove that a particular installation is certified or that the current product remains assessed to the same edition.

Compliance is a system-and-installation question. The door leaf, frame, hinges, closer, locking device, release controls, power supply, alarm interface, signage and commissioning records can all affect the outcome. A compliant terminal cannot make an unsuitable door assembly compliant.
- Obtain the current declaration, test evidence and installation instructions for the exact model and revision.
- Check which edition of BS EN 13637 and which national guidance apply in the building’s jurisdiction.
- Have the fire-safety engineer, access-control designer and door hardware specialist agree on the cause-and-effect sequence.
- Record acceptance tests for normal access, emergency trigger operation, alarm input, power loss, restoration and reset.
- Keep evidence that the installed configuration matches the approved hardware and wiring arrangement.
Where a building is in a regulated or high-occupancy environment, the approving authority or fire consultant may require additional evidence beyond the product literature.
Dynamic lockdown: security without blocking escape
Dynamic lockdown is the article’s term for restricting access to selected zones while still allowing people to escape. It is different from simply locking every door. A building-control or security event can change which areas are accessible, while the emergency egress path remains available through the escape-door release logic.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow zoning is planned
Start with a floor plan that marks escape routes, compartments, refuge areas, protected stairs and the zones that may need temporary restriction. For each door, state who may enter, who may leave, what event changes the state and which person or system can restore normal operation. Avoid a single “lockdown” command that has not been checked against evacuation routes.

What must be tested
A dynamic-lockdown test should demonstrate both halves of the requirement: the selected zone changes to the intended security state, and an occupant can still operate the approved escape release. Test at every affected door, not only at the controller, because a wiring fault, incompatible lock or incorrectly configured input can produce different behavior at the leaf.
Operational governance
Define who can initiate lockdown, who receives the alarm, how security staff communicate the state to occupants, and who is allowed to reset it. The 2018 article does not describe a particular software platform or lockdown policy; those are building-specific decisions that need written procedures and drills.

Specification checklist for a project team
Door and hardware survey
- Record door type, leaf and frame material, clear width, swing direction, fire or smoke rating and hardware already installed.
- Confirm that the blocking element, terminal and closer can be mounted without reducing the required escape width or interfering with panic hardware.
- Identify double-leaf doors, rebated pairs, acoustic seals and thresholds that could affect release or alignment.
Electrical and controls design
- Confirm the 24 V DC requirement for the selected terminal and calculate load, voltage drop and standby capacity for the complete system.
- Draw the connection between the controller, trigger, fire-alarm panel and any building-management or security system.
- Specify monitoring for open circuits, short circuits, power loss and communication faults where required by the approved design.
Life-safety documentation
- Write the cause-and-effect matrix in plain language: normal access, emergency trigger, fire alarm, power failure, reset and maintenance bypass.
- Identify the responsible person for daily checks, formal testing, incident logging and post-alarm reset.
- Provide signs and operating instructions that match the installed trigger and the building’s emergency plan.
Installation and commissioning sequence
The following sequence keeps the security and fire-safety disciplines aligned. The exact method must follow the current manufacturer’s instructions.
- Approve the design. Have the architect, fire consultant, access-control designer and door hardware specialist sign off the door schedule, escape strategy and interfaces.
- Verify equipment. Check model number, revision, supply voltage, approvals and compatibility against current documentation before delivery.
- Prepare the door. Inspect alignment, seals, hinges and closer operation. Correct mechanical defects before fitting electronic hardware.
- Install the terminal and blocking element. Use the specified surface-mounting arrangement and preserve clear escape width, signage and accessibility.
- Wire and label every interface. Separate power, trigger, alarm and control wiring as required, and label both ends so future maintenance does not depend on guesswork.
- Configure control logic. Enter only the approved normal, alarm, lockdown and reset states. Record configuration values and firmware versions.
- Test normal access. Verify authorized entry and exit, denied credentials, door position indication and event recording where those functions are specified.
- Test emergency release. Operate the key switch and push button, confirm release at the door, and check that the state is indicated and logged as designed.
- Test external inputs. Simulate the approved fire-alarm and building-control signals, including loss and restoration of the signal.
- Test power and faults. Check the documented fail-unlocked response, standby supply, cable faults, controller faults and recovery after power returns.
- Hand over. Provide as-built drawings, test sheets, user instructions, maintenance intervals, training records and a list of authorized reset personnel.
Common failure points and practical checks
| Observed problem | First checks | Why escalation may be needed |
|---|---|---|
| The door does not release from the trigger. | Confirm power at the terminal, trigger operation, controller indication and mechanical alignment. | A failed input, incorrect configuration or incompatible blocking device can look like a simple hardware fault. |
| Fire-alarm integration does not produce the expected state. | Compare the panel output, polarity, supervision and cause-and-effect record with the approved drawings. | Changing an alarm interface without fire-safety approval can create an unsafe sequence. |
| The door releases but will not secure again. | Check reset authorization, door position, closer action and the documented reset sequence. | Repeated resetting may conceal a mechanical or control fault that requires a qualified technician. |
| Lockdown restricts the wrong doors. | Compare zone labels, controller mapping and the current floor plan. | Do not leave a mis-zoned system in service; it can compromise both security and evacuation. |
Training, inspection and ongoing responsibility
The article says Abloy offered free Academy courses called Foundations and Foundations Plus, with presentation facilities and practical training. That statement dates from 2018 and does not establish that the courses, names or enrollment terms remain available. Ask the manufacturer or an authorized trainer for current options.
Training should cover more than button pressing. Security operators need to recognize normal, alarm and lockdown states; facilities staff need to perform routine visual checks; and fire-safety personnel need access to test records and configuration changes. Every exercise should record the date, door identity, observed release time or state, defects and corrective action.

Maintenance intervals should follow the current product instructions and the building’s fire-risk assessment. Include inspection after alterations, door replacement, fire-alarm upgrades, access-control software changes or a significant incident. A change that appears unrelated, such as a new closer or partition, can alter alignment or escape behavior.
What the 2018 article does—and does not—establish
It establishes that Abloy UK presented EDS as an access-controlled escape-door solution combining a fail-unlocked blocking element, intelligent control and a key-switch/push-button trigger. It names the EDS 1386 No Delay and EDS 1386 T1 Delay surface-mounted terminals at 24 V DC, and it describes links to BS EN 13637, fire alarms, other building controls and dynamic lockdown.
It does not establish current sales status, certification to a current standard edition, installation compatibility for a specific door, release timing for the T1 variant, dimensions, pricing, retailer availability or affiliate terms. Those facts must come from current manufacturer documents and a competent project review.
Bottom line for designers and building owners
An escape door system can provide controlled access without sacrificing emergency egress when the lock, controller, trigger, power supply and alarm interfaces are designed as one life-safety system. The EDS concept described in 2018 is useful as a framework: secure normal operation, an intentional emergency trigger, fail-unlocked release and coordinated control for dynamic lockdown. Treat the named models and standard reference as historical starting points, then verify every current technical and regulatory detail before specifying or installing them.
