Erosion: Treat the Problem, Not the Symptoms

Soil erosion control starts in the field: keep soil covered, limit unnecessary disturbance and manage runoff, with buffers as a complementary measure.

To control soil erosion, reduce the conditions that make soil vulnerable—bare ground, disruptive tillage and unmanaged water movement—rather than relying only on barriers that catch sediment after it leaves a field. Cover crops, retained crop residue and locally appropriate tillage practices can help protect soil; buffers and other edge-of-field measures remain useful as part of that broader approach.

Why erosion needs an in-field response

Erosion occurs when wind or moving water carries soil away. Once soil is exposed or disturbed, runoff can move it downslope and beyond the field. A barrier at the edge may intercept some sediment, but it does not keep the soil in place where erosion begins.

Kacey Birchmier’s 2017 Agriculture.com/Successful Farming article framed the issue as treating field conditions that contribute to soil loss, not relying solely on measures that address sediment after it has moved. Its figures are historical: Jerry Hatfield, then director of the USDA-ARS National Laboratory for Agriculture and the Environment, estimated Midwest soil loss at about 5 tons per acre per year, with severe cases nearer 100 tons per acre. These are article-era estimates, not current regional measurements. Hatfield also cautioned that “Erosion rates are dependent upon the year.” Read the 2017 article.

How to reduce erosion on a farm

Build a locally suitable system that keeps soil covered, limits unnecessary disturbance and manages water movement. USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) guidance describes four soil-health principles: minimize disturbance, maximize soil cover, maximize biodiversity and maximize continuous living roots. These principles work together; a single practice is not a guarantee against erosion.

Keep soil covered with residue and cover crops

Crop residue shields the soil surface, while cover crops provide living or dead plant cover during periods when cropland would otherwise be bare. NRCS says cover crops can reduce erosion and chemical runoff and increase water infiltration compared with leaving fields fallow. Its Conservation Practice Standard for Cover Crop (Ac.) (340) covers planting grasses, legumes or other herbaceous species on cropland that would otherwise be bare. Read the NRCS cover-crop standard.

Choose species and timing to fit the field, climate, crop rotation and management goals. Planting and termination windows, available equipment and residue handling can affect whether a cover-crop plan works in practice. NRCS’s national standard provides a framework; state standards add local details. Check the standard and local requirements.

Reduce disturbance where it fits the system

Tillage can reduce infiltration and increase runoff, while maintaining soil cover makes the surface less susceptible to wind and water erosion, according to NRCS cropland soil-health guidance. Reduced tillage or no-till may support those goals, but results depend on site conditions and management. An NRCS literature summary reports that infiltration may improve in the first few years after a shift from conventional tillage to no-till, or may take two to eight years; some sites do not show higher infiltration under no-till. Read the NRCS literature summary.

Make tillage decisions alongside residue management, crop rotation, soil type, slope and local rainfall. A practice that reduces disturbance but leaves soil bare at a vulnerable time may not address the field’s main erosion risk.

Plan for water movement

Assess where runoff starts, how it travels and where it concentrates. Field slope, soil conditions, rainfall patterns and crop cover all affect the risk. NRCS guidance supports improving cover and infiltration, but the appropriate combination of practices depends on local conditions. A conservation professional or local NRCS office can help identify applicable state standards and technical or financial assistance.

Where buffers and edge-of-field practices fit

Buffers and similar measures can slow or intercept sediment and nutrient movement near field edges and waterways. They are valuable, but they act after water and soil have begun moving. Pairing them with in-field practices addresses both the source of erosion and some of its downstream effects. In the 2017 article, Conservation Technology Information Center executive director Chad Watts said, “You protect land from erosion and reduce the amount of sediment you put into streams with these practices.”

Farm Plastic Supply - American Excelsior QuickGrass Pro - Green Erosion Control Blanket Landscape Roll, Erosion Control Blanket (8' x 112.5')
  • 100% Biodegradable - The top of each blanket is covered with photo-degradable or biodegradable netting. The blankets are naturally seed-free and contain no chemical additives. The Dimensions of this product depending on shipping are 7.5' x 112.5'.
  • Safeguard Topsoil - Excelsior netting is intended to safeguard topsoil from water and wind erosion while also promoting the perfect growth environment for grass seed. Wet curled excelsior fibers increase slightly in-depth and connect to form a robust fiber matrix with a built-in swell.
  • Versatile Product - Many industries use excelsior netting, particularly landscaping and road construction businesses and contractors working on residential, industrial, and commercial developments. They’ve also been used to improve drainage and waterways, and even landfill operators use them.
  • Strong Wooden Fibers - Wet curled excelsior fibers slightly expand in thickness and interlock to form a strong, fiber matrix and creating a built-in swell factor. This allows the fibers to have close contact with the area it is placed upon. Basically, the mat clings to the soil with “barbed” fibers to reduce soil loss and strengthen the foundation.
  • Provides Soil Nutrience - Aspen wood fibers are a renewable resource and act as mulch providing nutrients to the soil during breakdown. The fibers can be either natural or dyed green for instant color.

Is no-till enough to prevent erosion?

Not by itself. No-till can reduce soil disturbance, but erosion outcomes also depend on whether the surface remains covered, how water moves across the field, local soil and slope, and the wider crop-management system. NRCS’s findings on variable infiltration response are a reason to evaluate no-till as one practice within a locally adapted plan, not a universal fix.

What to consider before changing practices

  • Identify the erosion pathway: determine whether wind, surface runoff or concentrated water flow is the main concern.
  • Keep protection in place when soil is vulnerable: consider residue, cover-crop timing and periods between cash crops.
  • Match practices to the field: account for soil, slope, climate, rotation, planting and termination windows, and available equipment.
  • Allow for variable response: soil-function changes such as improved infiltration may take time and are not uniform across sites.
  • Combine field and edge measures: protect soil at its source while using buffers or other suitable practices to intercept movement.
