The best enzyme wallpaper remover depends on the wallcovering and the way you want to work. For a confirmed enzyme product family, Zinsser DIF is sold as a liquid concentrate, a ready-to-use liquid, and a ready-to-use gel. The concentrate requires mixing but lets you prepare the amount you need; the liquid is convenient for spraying or rolling; and the gel is designed to cling to vertical surfaces and stay wet on difficult wallpaper and adhesive.
None of those formats has been established by independent head-to-head testing as the universally fastest or most effective. Choose the format that matches the wallpaper, use light scoring so the remover can penetrate, saturate rather than lightly mist, follow the selected product’s current label for dwell time and dilution, and test a small inconspicuous area before treating the whole room.

What an enzyme wallpaper remover does
Wallpaper stripper is applied to soften the paste that holds wallcovering to the wall. An enzyme formulation is marketed as using enzyme action to break down wallpaper paste. Zinsser describes its DIF Liquid Concentrate as an enzyme-based stripper that is mixed with warm water, applied with a sprayer, roller or sponge, and capable of removing residual paste after the paper comes off. The practical objective is the same as with any remover: get enough moisture and product through the facing, wait for the paste to release, then lift the paper without gouging the wall.

Performance is controlled by the wallcovering as much as by the bottle. Porous paper can absorb remover readily. Vinyl and other coated papers may repel it, so the face must be perforated first. Multiple paint layers, old adhesive, and sections that have dried out require repeated saturation rather than a harder scraping stroke. Enzyme labeling does not remove the need to identify the covering, protect the substrate, or follow the product-specific instructions.

These are manufacturer descriptions, not comparative test results. The choice is primarily about preparation, application control and the ability to maintain saturation. Check the label on the container in your region because package sizes, directions and availability can change. A Zinsser UK page lists DIF enzyme-action concentrate in 1-litre and 2.5-litre sizes; that regional assortment should not be assumed to be the current US assortment.
Match the remover to the wallcovering
Uncoated or porous paper
Start with a small test patch. If the paper darkens and absorbs water, apply the remover generously with a roller, sponge or sprayer and allow it to penetrate. Work in sections small enough to keep wet while you scrape. Saturation is more important than covering a large area quickly.
Vinyl, vinyl-coated or painted-over paper
A coated face can prevent the remover from reaching the paste. Use a wallpaper scoring tool, such as PaperTiger, with light pressure to perforate the surface. ROMAN warns that excessive pressure can damage the wall underneath, so make enough passes to create access points without cutting into the substrate. If a test patch still beads water after scoring, make additional light passes rather than pressing harder.

Stubborn adhesive or several layers
Gel is useful where the remover needs to cling to a vertical surface, and the manufacturer says to keep DIF Gel saturated and reapply as needed. Remove the face layer first if it lifts separately, then re-wet the remaining backing and paste. Do not assume one application will dissolve every old adhesive deposit; scrape only after the material has softened.
Rooms with trim, flooring or nearby fixtures
Protect baseboards, outlets, switches, floors and adjacent finished surfaces before spraying. The DIF instructions specifically call for protecting adjoining areas from overspray. Turn off power at the breaker before removing cover plates, and keep liquid out of electrical boxes. Use a hand sprayer, roller or brush where overspray would be difficult to control.
Tools and preparation checklist
- Wallpaper scoring tool for coated or painted wallcovering.
- Paper scraper or broad putty knife with a clean, undamaged edge.
- Sprayer, roller, sponge or brush compatible with the selected remover.
- Bucket and measuring container when using concentrate.
- Drop cloths, plastic sheeting and painter’s tape for floors, trim and fixtures.
- Gloves and eye protection, with ventilation appropriate to the product label.
- Clean water, sponges and towels for rinsing paste residue.
- Waste bags or a box for wet paper, plus a stable step ladder if required.
Remove pictures and hardware, score a test area, and identify whether the paper has a removable face or backing. Read the complete label and the product’s safety data sheet before mixing or spraying. Have a scraper ready before applying remover so the softened section is not left to dry.

How to use an enzyme wallpaper stripper
- Test the wall. Choose a hidden area and apply the selected remover exactly as the label directs. Check whether the finish, drywall paper, plaster or paint softens, stains or lifts. If the substrate is damaged, stop and change the method or obtain professional advice.
- Protect the room. Cover floors and trim, tape plastic over outlets and nearby surfaces, and provide ventilation. Keep children and pets out of the work area.
- Score only where needed. Perforate vinyl, vinyl-coated or painted surfaces with light, even pressure. Porous paper may not need scoring; unnecessary aggressive scoring can damage the wall.
- Prepare the product. Ready-to-use liquid or gel can be applied directly if the label permits. For DIF Liquid Concentrate, mix it with warm water in the ratio printed on the current container. Do not substitute a dilution from another brand or from a different product format.
- Apply enough to saturate. Use a sprayer, roller, sponge or brush as allowed by the label. Cover a manageable section rather than spreading a thin film over the entire room. Gel should remain visibly wet; reapply it if the surface begins to dry.
- Allow the product-specific dwell time. Keep the section wet for the period stated on the label. A time printed for a different remover is not automatically valid for DIF. Thick, painted or layered paper may need a second application after the first layer is removed.
- Lift the paper. Start at a seam or loose edge and pull steadily. Use a paper scraper for sections that remain attached, holding the blade at a shallow angle and using controlled pressure. If the paper tears into small pieces or the wall fibers begin to lift, stop scraping and re-saturate.
- Remove backing and paste. Reapply remover to exposed backing or adhesive, wait again, and scrape when it has softened. Wipe paste from the wall with a damp sponge rather than grinding it into the surface.
- Rinse and dry. Follow the product directions for cleanup. Remove remaining residue with clean water, change rinse water frequently, and allow the wall to dry completely before sanding, priming or installing new wallcovering.
- Inspect under dry light. Look across the wall for glossy paste, ridges, loose paint, torn drywall paper or damp spots. Correct those defects before applying primer or paint.
A separate example: ROMAN removal-kit directions
ROMAN provides a concrete procedure for its own removal kit; these numbers do not automatically apply to DIF or any other remover. The kit directions call for mixing 6 ounces of concentrate into 1 gallon of hot water at 120°F, saturating the wallpaper, waiting 15 minutes, and scraping. The same information states coverage of up to 300 square feet per gallon. Treat the coverage as a manufacturer-stated planning figure: actual use varies with application method, wallcovering, temperature, porosity and how many applications are required.
ROMAN’s PRO-466 instructions also say that vinyl or vinyl-coated wallcoverings must be perforated, specify a 15-minute soak, and require thorough wall rinsing and drying before painting or hanging new paper. The reviewed information identifies PRO-466 as a paste remover but does not establish that it is enzyme-based. If you select it, use its own label rather than the DIF procedure.
Safety, ventilation and product documents
Keep remover off skin and out of eyes, wear the protection specified on the label, and work in a well-ventilated area. Do not mix wallpaper removers with other chemicals. Store containers securely and keep them away from children. Protect floors and furnishings from both drips and spray; a product described as no-drip can still run from an over-saturated wall or spill during handling.

Read the exact product’s current safety data sheet (SDS) for ingredients, handling, storage, exposure controls, ecological information and disposal. The technical data sheet (TDS), where provided, contains application information such as preparation, instructions and coverage. These documents are product-specific, so an SDS or TDS for one DIF format or one ROMAN product should not be used as the safety instruction for another.

The only concrete coverage figure in the available manufacturer material is up to 300 square feet per gallon for the ROMAN removal kit and approximately 300 square feet per gallon on the ROMAN PRO-466 product information. It is not an independent measurement and is not a coverage promise for DIF. Concentrate yield depends on the label’s mix ratio, while ready-to-use products are purchased as applied. Coated paper, heavy paste, repeated applications and absorbent plaster can consume considerably more material than a smooth, single layer of porous paper.

Troubleshooting common removal problems
The remover beads up or runs off
The face is probably coated, or the surface was not scored adequately. Let the area dry enough to work safely, make light perforations, and apply again in a smaller section. A gel can help on a vertical wall where liquid will not remain in contact.
Paper tears into tiny pieces
There is not enough penetration or dwell time. Stop pulling, saturate the section again, and wait according to the label. Use a scraper only after the paste has softened; forcing dry paper increases the chance of wall damage.
Adhesive remains after the paper is gone
Apply remover to the exposed paste, keep it wet, and scrape or wipe after it softens. Change rinse water often so dissolved paste is not spread back over the wall. A final clean-water wipe and complete drying are required before finishing.
The wall surface lifts or shows torn fibers
Stop immediately. Reduce scoring pressure, use a broader scraper at a shallow angle, and test a less aggressive method in another small area. Damaged drywall paper may need sealing and repair before painting; do not hide active damage under primer.
The product seems slow
Check that the work area is fully saturated, the room is not excessively hot or drafty, and the section is small enough to remain wet. Reapply as directed instead of increasing chemical concentration or mixing products. Slow release can reflect multiple layers or an impermeable coating rather than a defective remover.
What the available evidence can—and cannot—prove
Manufacturer pages establish that DIF is offered in enzyme concentrate, liquid ready-to-use and gel ready-to-use formats, with the application characteristics described above. They do not provide an independent comparison proving that one format removes every wallpaper type faster or more completely than another. The same limitation applies when comparing DIF with ROMAN removers. Select by wallcovering, access, saturation control and the current label, then verify the method on a test patch before committing to the whole room.
