Emerald Elementary School in Broomfield, Colorado, is presented in 2024 project coverage as a net-zero-ready public school whose envelope includes Tubelite’s Therml=Block TU24650 Series Storefront. The 56,000-square-foot replacement facility combines thermally broken, dual-cavity aluminum framing with daylight, ventilation, low-VOC materials and adaptable classrooms. Boulder Valley School District is reported to have said the new building is 48% more energy efficient than the replaced building or a code-compliant building of the same size. That percentage is a district-reported comparison; the coverage does not publish the underlying energy data, measurement period or calculation method.
What was built at Emerald Elementary
Emerald Elementary serves pre-kindergarten through fifth grade in the Boulder Valley School District. The reported 56,000-square-foot project replaced a school originally built in 1958, after that building had undergone several renovations and additions. Swinerton constructed the replacement on the prior school site while the existing facility remained in operation, allowing the district to maintain a functioning school during construction.

What “net-zero-ready” means in this project coverage
“Net-zero-ready” is a design description, not proof that the school currently produces as much energy as it uses. The district’s reported policy is that new schools and other buildings should meet a LEED v4.1 Gold standard regardless of whether certification is pursued, and should be designed as zero-net-energy or zero-net-energy-ready facilities. That language establishes an ambition and a design brief. It does not establish that Emerald Elementary received LEED Gold certification, achieved measured zero annual energy use, or has a completed renewable-energy balance.

Why the distinction matters
A ready building is generally planned so that efficiency measures and infrastructure can support a future net-zero target. Actual net-zero performance depends on operation, weather, occupancy, plug loads, maintenance and the amount and timing of renewable generation. The sources for this project do not provide an energy model, utility bills, commissioning report, photovoltaic capacity, annual production, site-energy boundary or verification protocol. Those omissions do not invalidate the design goal; they define what can responsibly be claimed from the available project account.
How the reported 48% comparison should be understood
The project coverage attributes a figure of 48% more energy efficient to Boulder Valley School District. The stated comparison is the new building versus either the replaced building or a code-compliant building of the same size, with the wording presented in the coverage. The sources do not identify which baseline was used for each calculation, the buildings’ operating schedules, the weather-normalization method, the energy-use intensity values or the period represented.
Consequently, the number is best used as a statement of the district’s reported design or performance comparison, not as an independently verified benchmark. It should not be recast as a guaranteed 48% utility-bill reduction for every school, climate or operating pattern. A facilities team evaluating the project would need the district’s calculation files, interval or monthly utility data, baseline assumptions and verification period before using the percentage for a capital-planning model.

The Therml=Block TU24650 storefront specification
The named storefront is Tubelite Therml=Block TU24650 Series. Coverage describes it as dual thermally broken aluminum framing with a dual cavity and a debridged ultra-thermal barrier. These features are intended to reduce conductive heat flow through the frame and improve resistance to interior-surface condensation compared with less thermally capable framing arrangements.
Frame geometry and glazing relationship
The insulated-glass plane is reported to align with the system’s 4½-inch depth. That relationship is important during detailing because the frame depth, glass position, pressure plates, gaskets and adjacent wall interfaces must work as a coordinated assembly. The project articles describe the system configuration, but they do not publish a project-specific U-factor, condensation-resistance value, air-leakage result, water-penetration result or field test report.
Thermal breaks and condensation control
A thermal break interrupts the direct aluminum path between exterior and interior portions of a frame. The TU24650 description adds a dual cavity and debridged ultra-thermal barrier, which the coverage associates with improved U-factors and condensation resistance. Those are system-design objectives. Actual performance at Emerald depends on the selected glass, spacer, sill conditions, fasteners, perimeter seals, wall interfaces, orientation and installation quality. The published account should therefore be read as a product and design description rather than a substitute for project submittals or testing.

Finish and fabrication support
The aluminum is reported with a clear Class I anodized finish. Linetec is identified as the finishing provider and as providing thermal improvement for the framing system. Anodizing supplies the specified appearance and a durable finish appropriate to a high-use school envelope, while the thermal-performance claim remains tied to the described system configuration and not to an independently reported whole-building result.
Why storefront selection matters in a school envelope
Storefront occupies a large share of many school façades, especially where classrooms are designed around daylight and visual connection to the outdoors. Frame conductivity, glass selection and perimeter detailing can influence interior surface temperatures, comfort near glazing and the risk of condensation in cold conditions. A thermally improved frame can support the envelope strategy, but it cannot compensate for discontinuous insulation, poorly drained sill conditions or unsealed transitions to opaque walls.
For a school that remains occupied during construction or has demanding maintenance schedules, repeatable details matter as much as nominal product performance. Designers and contractors should coordinate the storefront shop drawings with the air barrier, vapor control layer, insulation continuity, flashing and interior finishes. The Emerald coverage identifies the system and its intended thermal advantages; it does not document the field execution of those interfaces.

Daylight, ventilation and material choices
Boulder Valley School District is quoted as describing the building as designed “with an eye on indoor environmental quality with abundant natural light provided by large windows, comfortable furniture and good indoor air quality achieved with ample ventilation and the use of low-VOC products and materials.” Those are design objectives that connect the storefront to the daily experience of students and staff.
Large windows can provide daylight and views, while also introducing solar heat gain and glare that must be managed through orientation, glass selection, shading and controls. The sources do not state the glazing’s visible-transmittance, solar-heat-gain coefficient or shading specification, so those values should be obtained from the project’s construction documents rather than inferred from the storefront designation.
“Ample ventilation” and low-VOC materials address indoor-environmental priorities, but the coverage does not provide outdoor-air rates, filtration levels, sensor sequences, product inventories or post-occupancy indoor-air measurements. A building operator seeking to confirm performance would need mechanical schedules, balancing records, commissioning documentation and ongoing maintenance data.

Transparency and flexible learning spaces
RB+B is quoted as saying, “Transparency between learning areas and the outdoors was also a key component of the design.” In practice, that idea can be expressed through glazed classroom fronts, shared visual connections and window placement that lets occupants see landscape and circulation areas. The project account does not claim that transparency alone produced measured academic or wellness outcomes.
The district’s flexible-learning description focuses on spaces that allow teachers to personalize learning, use multiple teaching modes and engage students. Adaptable learning areas, movable furniture and walls that can be reconfigured are intended to support different teaching approaches and needs throughout the day. This is a planning and design intent, not a reported post-occupancy evaluation. Its success will depend on storage, acoustics, supervision, technology, scheduling and staff practices as well as on the physical layout.
What the project does—and does not—establish
- It establishes a named 56,000-square-foot Emerald Elementary replacement project in Broomfield and identifies the Therml=Block TU24650 Series as its storefront.
- It establishes that the coverage describes dual thermally broken, dual-cavity aluminum framing with a debridged ultra-thermal barrier and a 4½-inch system depth aligned with the insulated-glass plane.
- It attributes the 48% energy-efficiency comparison to Boulder Valley School District and preserves the stated baseline language rather than treating it as a universal result.
- It describes a district design standard calling for LEED v4.1 Gold-level design and zero-net-energy or zero-net-energy-ready goals, regardless of certification; it does not establish LEED certification for Emerald.
- It reports daylight, ventilation, low-VOC materials, outdoor transparency and flexible learning as design priorities.
- It does not provide installed-system test results, project energy-use data, a renewable-generation balance, post-occupancy indoor-air measurements or measured educational outcomes.

Recognition and broader project significance
Emerald Elementary received a Peak Design Award from the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the Association for Learning Environments, according to the project coverage. The award adds professional recognition to the project but does not function as an energy certification or a substitute for measured performance.
The project is significant because it combines a public-school replacement, an explicitly stated zero-net-energy-ready ambition and a storefront specification aimed at better thermal behavior. Its strongest documented lesson is methodological: a high-performance school story should connect envelope products, indoor-environmental goals and operational evidence without treating any one product or headline percentage as proof of whole-building performance.
Bottom line
Emerald Elementary is a 56,000-square-foot Broomfield school designed around a reported net-zero-ready objective and a Tubelite Therml=Block TU24650 Series Storefront. The coverage supports describing the frame as thermally broken, dual-cavity and configured with a debridged ultra-thermal barrier, plus a clear Class I anodized finish supplied through Linetec. It also supports attributing the district’s 48% efficiency comparison and its daylight, ventilation, low-VOC and flexible-learning goals. It does not support claiming LEED certification, verified net-zero operation or independently measured storefront performance without additional project documentation.
