The Australian Government announced the features on 12 September 2025, describing the Perth campus as a $853 million project then due to open in semester one of 2026. Edith Cowan University’s June 2026 update says the campus opened in February 2026.
What is ECU City’s media architecture?
ECU City is Edith Cowan University’s campus in Perth’s CBD, within the Perth City Link precinct. Its media architecture has two distinct components: a distributed digital façade visible from outside and a large indoor screen designed as a creative surface for the campus foyer. Both are intended to carry curated visual content, including work by artists and students.
The Australian Government described the campus as covering 65,000 square metres and valued the project at $853 million in its September 2025 announcement. These are figures reported by the government, not independent measurements. The project was jointly funded by the Commonwealth, Western Australian Government and ECU; a 2023 state announcement listed contributions of $294 million, $199 million and $360 million respectively.
How many LED lights are on the ECU campus?
The exterior system comprises more than 2,800 custom LED lattice fixtures integrated into the building’s fin façade, according to the Australian Government. ECU says the fixtures would stretch nearly five kilometres if laid end to end. The system supports video across two sides of the campus exterior.

This is not one flat screen: the fixtures form a distributed display integrated with the façade. The sources describe its configuration and intended use, but do not provide comparative figures for brightness, resolution, energy consumption, supplier or maintenance costs.
How big is the ECU foyer screen?
The main foyer has a four-storey screen measuring 407 square metres and wrapping across multiple surfaces. The 2025 government announcement anticipated it would be one of Australia’s largest indoor LED displays. That was an expectation in the announcement, not an independently verified current national ranking.

The foyer screen is intended as a curated canvas for creative work and storytelling. The façade, by contrast, brings video content onto the campus exterior and into the surrounding public realm. Available sources do not establish a technical performance comparison between the two systems.
What will the displays show?
ECU and government descriptions envisage an evolving program of artists’ and students’ creative work, alongside public engagement and storytelling. The government announcement also said the digital infrastructure uses technology of a kind used in global film and gaming production. Premier Roger Cook likened it to the infrastructure behind LED volume stages used in blockbuster productions. The sources reviewed do not identify a vendor or model, or provide an independent technical evaluation.

How does the media architecture relate to ECU’s cultural framework?
ECU says the campus design draws on its Cultural Narrative Framework, particularly “Life Layers.” The university credits Dr Richard Walley with initially articulating the narrative in consultation with Whadjuk Noongar Elders. ECU describes it as reflecting enduring connections between land, water and culture, expressed through the façade, artworks, signage and interior spaces. The media displays are components of the broader design; the university’s account does not say that the display hardware alone represents the whole cultural framework.
Which courses and schools are based at ECU City?
The 2025 announcement said the campus would house the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), the School of Business and Law, creative humanities programs including the WA Screen and Media Academy, technology and cyber security programs, and Kurongkurl Katitjin. ECU’s June 2026 update confirms WAAPA and the School of Business and Law among the campus occupants, alongside creative industries and technology courses.

When did ECU City open?
The media-architecture announcement was made on 12 September 2025, when the campus was still described as due to open in semester one of 2026. ECU’s update published on 16 June 2026 reports that the campus opened in February 2026. The earlier forecast should not be mistaken for the current opening status.
In that June update, ECU also reported receiving four awards across 14 categories at the 2026 West Australian Architecture Awards. That is the university’s description of its awards result.

The project’s headline figures and display specifications come from the Australian Government’s 12 September 2025 announcement.
