Verdict: The EcoFlow WAVE 3 is one of the strongest battery-capable portable heat-pump systems available, but it is not the best portable air conditioner for everyone. Its 6,100-BTU cooling, 6,800-BTU heating, app control and off-grid operation make it compelling for campers, van and RV owners, remote cabins and emergency cooling. For an ordinary bedroom or apartment with a usable window, however, a window unit, dual-hose portable AC or mini-split will usually deliver more cooling per dollar.

What is the EcoFlow WAVE 3?

The WAVE 3 is a portable air conditioner and reversible heat pump. It can cool, heat, dehumidify, circulate air and run automatically. Control is available from the physical panel and through EcoFlow’s Wi-Fi and Bluetooth app. The unit can run from wall power, a WAVE 3 Add-on Battery or certain compatible EcoFlow power stations.

That battery architecture is the product’s defining feature. The WAVE 3 is not a conventional plug-in portable AC that becomes cordless by itself. Off-grid operation requires additional equipment, and the battery is not included with the base unit.

EcoFlow lists a 6,100-BTU cooling capacity and 6,800-BTU heating capacity. Those are manufacturer ratings, not a guarantee that the unit will cool or heat a particular room size. Actual results depend on insulation, air leakage, outdoor temperature, humidity, sun exposure and how effectively the exhaust is routed outside. See the official specifications and user manual.

Cooling performance: strong for small enclosed spaces

The WAVE 3 is best understood as a small-space and spot-cooling appliance. It can be effective in an enclosed van, RV, cabin, sleeping pod or reasonably sealed tent, especially when the cooled area is insulated and the hot exhaust is routed outside.

It is not a sensible replacement for central air or a permanently installed system. An open-sided shelter, large uninsulated tent or leaky vehicle can overwhelm a 6,100-BTU portable unit. In those conditions, the air leaving the unit may feel cold while the overall space remains uncomfortable.

EcoFlow advertises a 15°F cooling reduction in 15 minutes under its stated test conditions. That claim should not be read as a universal result. Room volume, starting temperature, humidity, solar gain and exhaust configuration can all change the outcome.

Heating is a genuine heat-pump feature

Unlike a cooling-only portable AC, the WAVE 3 reverses its refrigeration cycle to provide heat. That makes it more useful for shoulder-season camping, vans, RVs, cabins and emergency comfort than a cooling-only competitor.

It is still a comfort heater, not an all-weather furnace. EcoFlow lists an operating range beginning at 41°F, so heating performance near and below that limit requires caution. The unit is not an appropriate substitute for a furnace or a freeze-protection system in severe cold.

Battery operation and the real meaning of “up to eight hours”

The optional WAVE 3 battery is rated at 1,024 Wh, uses LFP chemistry and weighs about 21.4 lb. EcoFlow claims two to eight hours of operation depending on mode and conditions. The battery supports up to 400 W solar input and 12/24-volt vehicle charging up to 200 W, according to the specifications.

Eight hours should not be interpreted as eight hours of maximum-output cooling. At roughly 640–700 W of continuous electrical input, a simple ideal calculation suggests approximately 1.5 hours from a 1,024-Wh battery before conversion losses, reserve capacity and other variables. Longer runtimes require lower-power operation, compressor cycling, a mild heat load or a space that has already reached its target temperature.

  • Maximum-output use: Shorter runtime and the greatest cooling or heating capacity.
  • Eco or cycling use: Potentially much longer runtime after the space stabilizes.
  • Hot, sunny conditions: Higher load and shorter runtime.
  • Solar-assisted use: Runtime can be extended, but only when solar input, weather and battery state support it.

Buyers should budget for the complete system, not just the air-conditioner price. The main unit weighs about 33.7 lb; adding the battery brings the core equipment to roughly 55 lb before hoses, cables and accessories.

Installation, exhaust and drainage

The WAVE 3 is portable, but it is not installation-free. Its insulated exhaust duct must be positioned so hot air is rejected outside the cooled space. In a van, RV, tent or room, the opening must be sealed as well as practical. Poor sealing lets hot air and humidity back in, reducing performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the duct as straight and unrestricted as possible. Long runs, sharp bends and badly sealed openings can increase noise and reduce effective cooling. The hose and power cables also create trip and storage issues in small spaces.

Condensate management is equally important. Cooling and dehumidification can produce water, particularly in humid conditions. Use the prescribed drain outlets and route water to a suitable container or drain. A kinked hose, an elevated drain route or a full container can trigger overflow protection and stop operation. Do not place the unit where a leak could damage flooring, bedding, electronics or the battery.

IPX4 means protection from water splashes; it does not make the WAVE 3 waterproof. It needs shelter from sustained rain while retaining adequate airflow.

Noise and everyday portability

EcoFlow rates the WAVE 3 at 44–58 dB. That is a range, not a promise that it will be silent or equally quiet in every mode. Compressor speed, fan setting, distance, hard surfaces and vibration through a vehicle floor all affect perceived noise.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Independent and user reports are mixed. WIRED measured the Zero Breeze Mark 3 at approximately 55 dB from three feet in its review, while WAVE 3 owners have described both acceptable operation and problems including vibration, squealing or grinding. These owner reports are anecdotal and do not establish a product-wide failure rate.

Portability also needs a realistic definition. At 33.7 lb, the main unit is manageable for vehicle loading but not lightweight camping gear. With the 21.4-lb battery attached, the setup is about 55 lb before accessories. It is most practical when moved short distances or carried by two people, rather than repeatedly transported over a long trail.

Reliability, controls and support

The physical controls allow basic operation without relying entirely on Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. The app is useful for remote adjustments and monitoring, but buyers should not purchase the product assuming that every feature or screen will remain identical across firmware and app versions.

Online ownership discussions include reports of drainage problems, leaks, unusual fan noise, grinding and units requiring replacement. Those reports are worth considering when evaluating returns and warranty support, but they are self-selected anecdotes. There is no evidence here to establish a verified systemic defect or failure rate.

Before buying, confirm the current regional warranty, return window, included accessories and support arrangements. EcoFlow listings have shown a two-year warranty claim, but terms can vary by region and product configuration.

Price: compare the complete system

EcoFlow US listings have shown different configurations, including approximately $899 for a bare WAVE 3 and approximately $1,449 for a WAVE 3-plus-battery configuration. Other pages have shown different promotional totals or sold-out status. These should be treated as observed listing signals, not a single guaranteed current price; check the exact live purchase listing before ordering.

The important comparison is not “WAVE 3 versus a cheap portable AC.” It is “complete battery-capable WAVE 3 system versus the alternative that fits the use case.” A buyer who only needs wall-powered cooling may be paying for a battery ecosystem that will never be used.

WAVE 3 versus conventional air-conditioning options

Window AC

A window unit is normally the better value for a room with a suitable window. It avoids the WAVE 3’s battery cost and can deliver strong stationary cooling for less money. Its disadvantages are installation, window compatibility and lack of portability.

Dual-hose portable AC

A dual-hose model is a more rational comparison for renters who cannot install a window unit. It still requires an exhaust opening, but it is designed primarily for wall-powered indoor use and may provide more cooling per dollar.

Mini-split heat pump

A mini-split is the stronger long-term solution for a permanent room, cabin or workshop. It generally requires professional installation and cannot follow you camping, but it offers a better permanent heating-and-cooling solution than a small battery appliance.

Vehicle-installed or RV systems

For a van or RV that does not need a removable appliance, a properly installed system can provide better value and performance. The WAVE 3 earns its premium when the ability to remove, relocate or operate away from the grid is central to the purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who should buy the WAVE 3?

  • Campers: A good fit for an enclosed, insulated sleeping space with a safe exhaust and drainage plan.
  • Van and RV owners: Particularly attractive when portability and existing EcoFlow equipment matter.
  • Remote-cabin users: Useful where installation is impractical and battery or solar power is available.
  • Emergency-preparedness buyers: Valuable for targeted cooling or heating during outages, provided the battery is purchased and maintained.
  • Apartment or bedroom buyers: Usually better served by a window unit, dual-hose AC or mini-split if those options are available.
  • Budget buyers: Should avoid it unless battery operation is genuinely necessary.
  • Large-space owners: Should not expect a 6,100-BTU portable unit to replace whole-home air-conditioning.

Final verdict

The EcoFlow WAVE 3 is top-tier within the narrow category of battery-capable portable heat-pump air conditioners. Its combination of heating, cooling, compact form, app control and EcoFlow compatibility is unusually capable for off-grid comfort.

It is not automatically the best portable AC overall. The battery is extra, the full system is heavy and expensive, runtime depends strongly on operating conditions, and exhaust and condensate management remain essential. Buy it when portable battery-powered heating and cooling are worth the premium. For ordinary wall-powered room cooling, spend less on a window unit, dual-hose portable AC or mini-split instead.
