EcoFlow WAVE 3

EcoFlow WAVE 3 review: a powerful portable air conditioner and heater—with important limits

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verdict: The EcoFlow WAVE 3 is an excellent specialist appliance for cooling or heating a small, enclosed space without permanent HVAC installation. Its battery option makes it unusually useful for campervans, workshops, garden rooms, sheds, RVs and off-grid applications. It is also a meaningful step up from the WAVE 2.

But it is not better in every way, and it is not a value replacement for a conventional portable air conditioner. The WAVE 3 is heavier than its predecessor, expensive once the battery is added, audible at full power and still needs hot-air exhaust ducting for effective room cooling. Its advertised battery life can also be much longer than what you should expect during maximum cooling.

What is the EcoFlow WAVE 3?

The WAVE 3 is a portable heat-pump air conditioner and heater. It can cool, heat, circulate air and dehumidify, with control through physical buttons and the EcoFlow app. Unlike a conventional portable AC, it can operate from an optional battery or compatible EcoFlow power station, making it suitable for locations without reliable mains electricity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That flexibility comes at a premium. The base WAVE 3 does not include a battery, so verify the exact bundle before buying. Battery-powered operation requires the WAVE 3 Add-on Battery or a compatible EcoFlow power station.

WAVE 3 versus WAVE 2: what actually changed?

The WAVE 3 improves several important figures, but the upgrade is not an across-the-board win.

Area WAVE 3 WAVE 2 Practical meaning
Cooling 6,100 BTU Approximately 5,100 BTU More capacity for small enclosed spaces
Airflow 330 m³/h Approximately 250 m³/h More air movement and faster heat exchange
Heating 6,800 BTU Lower than WAVE 3 More useful in cool-weather applications
Battery chemistry LFP add-on battery Older battery chemistry Longer claimed cycle life and better longevity potential
Weight Approximately 15.3 kg Approximately 14.5 kg The newer unit is heavier
Battery option 1,024-Wh add-on battery Older-generation battery system More robust battery platform, but costly and heavy
Smart features Automatic mode, dehumidification, drainage notifications and app control More limited feature set Better monitoring and convenience

Independent testing described the WAVE 3 as roughly 1 kg heavier than the WAVE 2 while delivering higher output. The newer model’s internally insulated exhaust duct should also reduce heat transfer through the hose, although duct routing and room sealing remain critical.

The biggest practical improvement is the combination of increased output and the LFP battery option. The biggest drawbacks are that the complete system is heavier and that the battery does not turn the WAVE 3 into an unlimited off-grid air conditioner.

Cooling performance: good for small spaces, not whole buildings

EcoFlow claims the WAVE 3 can lower temperature by 15°F in 15 minutes. It also claims a 17°F temperature increase in 15 minutes when heating. These are manufacturer claims, not universal room-performance guarantees. Results depend on the room volume, insulation, humidity, starting temperature, duct arrangement and how well the space is sealed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is an important difference between four types of performance:

  • Outlet cooling: the air leaving the unit feels cold.
  • Personal cooling: the air makes a person at a desk, bed or campsite more comfortable.
  • Enclosed-space cooling: the WAVE 3 lowers the temperature throughout a small room, vehicle or tent.
  • Continuous cooling: the unit maintains the target temperature during the hottest part of the day.

The WAVE 3 can be very effective in the first three situations when the space is small and reasonably sealed. Continuous cooling in a poorly insulated workshop, open-plan room or sun-heated vehicle is a much harder task.

Its 6,100-BTU rating is modest beside many mains-powered household portable ACs rated at 10,000–14,000 BTU. That does not make the WAVE 3 weak; it means the product is designed around mobility and battery operation rather than maximum cooling capacity per dollar.

A claim sometimes associated with the WAVE 3 is suitability for a room of around 17 square metres. Treat that as context-dependent rather than a guaranteed room-size limit. Ceiling height, solar gain, insulation, humidity and air leakage can change the result substantially.

Heating performance

The WAVE 3 uses a heat-pump system rather than simply adding a resistive heater. EcoFlow lists 6,800 BTU / 2,000 W of heating capacity, which makes it useful for a cool office, garden room, workshop, shed, campervan or mild-weather camping.

It is not a universal winter-heating replacement. The stated operating range starts at 41°F / 5°C, and heat-pump performance generally declines as outdoor conditions become colder. Anyone needing dependable primary heating in freezing conditions should consider a properly sized fixed heat pump, furnace or dedicated heater instead.

Heating can also consume significant battery power and may produce drainage requirements. Read the official WAVE 3 manual before relying on it in an unattended or overnight installation.

Battery life: the headline number needs context

The optional WAVE 3 Add-on Battery stores 1,024 Wh. EcoFlow advertises approximately 2–8 hours of runtime, but that is a range across different loads and conditions—not a promise of eight hours of maximum cooling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The arithmetic explains why. At around 640–700 W of cooling input, a 1,024-Wh battery has a theoretical full-load runtime of roughly 1.5 hours before conversion losses and control overhead. If the compressor cycles down after the space cools, consumption can fall and runtime can increase considerably.

Notebookcheck reported less than two hours of operation at maximum cooling in a hot motorhome environment, and around four hours when cooling demand was closer to 250 W. Those figures are more useful for planning than the best-case “up to eight hours” statement.

Your actual result will depend on:

  • Outdoor temperature and humidity.
  • How well the room, tent, RV or vehicle is insulated.
  • The set temperature and fan speed.
  • Whether the space is already cool or is being pulled down from a high temperature.
  • How much hot air enters through gaps around windows, doors and ducts.
  • Whether other devices are drawing power from the battery.

For overnight use, plan around the cooling load rather than the maximum advertised runtime. The WAVE 3 is much more convincing as a way to reduce heat and maintain comfort in a small sealed space than as a guarantee of all-night maximum cooling.

Solar and vehicle charging

The add-on battery supports up to 400 W of solar input and up to 200 W of 12/24-V vehicle charging. It also provides USB output, including up to 140 W through USB-C, and is rated for at least 80% capacity after 4,000 cycles according to EcoFlow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Solar input can extend runtime or recharge the battery, but it does not guarantee continuous full-power cooling. A nominal 400-W solar array will not deliver 400 W continuously, while the WAVE 3 can draw considerably more than that during heavy cooling. Solar is therefore best treated as a way to reduce battery depletion or recover energy during the day—not as an assumption of unlimited air conditioning.

Noise: portable does not mean silent

EcoFlow rates the WAVE 3 at 44–58 dB. Notebookcheck measured up to approximately 57 dB at one metre during maximum cooling and around 47 dB while charging.

That may be acceptable in a workshop, RV or garden room, particularly at low output. It is not silent, and maximum cooling will be clearly audible in a bedroom or tent. Compressor noise, fan noise and vibration can also be more noticeable when the unit is placed against a wall or on a hard floor.

Use the lowest effective setting for sleeping, place the unit on a stable surface and avoid tight corners that reflect sound. Anyone expecting the quietness of a split-system indoor unit is likely to be disappointed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hoses and installation: it is portable, but not hose-free

For serious room cooling, the WAVE 3 needs to exhaust hot air outdoors. That means a window, vehicle vent, RV opening, tent arrangement or another suitable route through the enclosure.

The supplied ducting can extend from approximately 25 cm to about 130 cm, according to Notebookcheck, and the package includes multiple adapters. The duct is insulated, but insulation cannot compensate for poor installation.

Practical installation checklist

  1. Position the WAVE 3 with adequate clearance around the intake and outlet.
  2. Route the exhaust duct outdoors rather than into the same room.
  3. Use a window, vehicle or tent seal that matches the supplied adapter geometry.
  4. Keep the hose as short and straight as practical.
  5. Avoid crushing, sharply bending or obstructing the duct.
  6. Prevent hot exhaust air from being drawn back toward the intake.
  7. Seal gaps around the opening so cooled air is not immediately replaced by hot air.
  8. Do not place the unit in a cramped compartment or against combustible materials.

A poor window or tent seal can make a capable air conditioner appear underpowered. In a small room, the quality of the exhaust arrangement may matter almost as much as the nominal BTU figure.

Drainage and leakage: test it before relying on it

The WAVE 3 supports cooling, heating, fan, dehumidification, overflow shutdown and drainage functions. However, one hands-on review reported leakage when automatic drainage was activated despite the reviewer connecting the drainage pipe as directed. That is evidence of a potential setup or unit-specific problem, not proof that every WAVE 3 leaks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before leaving the unit unattended:

  1. Place it level on a protected surface.
  2. Connect the drain hose according to the manual.
  3. Ensure the hose slopes continuously toward its container or drain.
  4. Run the appliance in the mode most likely to produce condensate.
  5. Inspect the hose connections and the base of the unit.
  6. Keep a backup container available for the first few uses.
  7. Keep water away from the battery and electrical connections.

Drainage should be treated as part of the installation, not as a feature that eliminates the need for checks.

App and controls

The EcoFlow app can provide temperature and mode adjustment, battery information, scheduling, drain notifications and remote control through Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. That is particularly useful when the WAVE 3 is installed in an RV, garden room, workshop or other space that is not directly beside you.

The physical controls remain important. Do not assume the appliance becomes unusable if Wi-Fi is unavailable, but check the current manual and regional app requirements before installation. App labels and menu locations can change with firmware updates, so the manual is the more reliable reference for physical operation.

Scheduling is one of the more useful features for battery operation: it can shut the unit down after a cooling period instead of allowing a battery to drain unnecessarily. Remote alerts are helpful, but drainage and connection notifications should not be treated as a substitute for checking a new installation in person.

How portable is the complete system?

The main unit weighs approximately 33.7 lb / 15.3 kg. One person can move it, but it is not lightweight camping equipment.

The optional battery weighs about 21.4 lb / 9.7 kg. Together, the core system weighs roughly 55 lb / 25 kg, before adding ducts, cables, adapters, window seals and containers. It is practical to move from a vehicle into an RV, workshop or garden room. It is much less appealing to carry up stairs or over a long distance to a remote tent.

Portability is therefore best judged by the use case. The WAVE 3 is mobile compared with a fixed HVAC system, but it is not effortless to transport like a fan or small evaporative cooler.

Who should buy the WAVE 3?

It is a strong fit for:

  • Campervans, RVs and temporary accommodation.
  • Small workshops, studios, sheds and garden rooms.
  • Off-grid or backup cooling where battery operation matters.
  • Tent or vehicle camping with a practical exhaust route.
  • Users who need both heating and cooling from one appliance.
  • Existing EcoFlow customers with compatible batteries, solar equipment or power stations.
  • People who value mobility more than the lowest cost per BTU.

It is a poor fit for:

  • Large living rooms or open-plan spaces.
  • Anyone who cannot route hot air outdoors.
  • Buyers seeking the cheapest mains-powered air conditioner.
  • People expecting silent operation.
  • Anyone needing all-night maximum cooling from one battery.
  • Homes where a window AC, dual-hose unit or mini-split can be installed.
  • Users unwilling to manage condensate and test drainage.
  • Anyone needing primary, dependable heating in freezing weather.

How it compares with alternatives

Conventional portable AC

A conventional plug-in unit usually offers more cooling capacity for less money. It is the better choice when the appliance will stay in one room and reliable mains power is available. The WAVE 3 earns its premium through mobility, battery compatibility, heating and off-grid flexibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dual-hose portable AC

A dual-hose model is often more suitable for efficient room cooling because it reduces the negative pressure and hot-air infiltration associated with many single-hose designs. Choose it when cooling performance matters more than battery operation.

Portable split-system AC

A portable split system can offer quieter, more effective cooling in an RV, bedroom or small building, but it may be less convenient to move and can require more deliberate setup.

Mini-split heat pump

For a permanent room, cabin or garden building, a properly sized mini-split will generally be quieter and more efficient for sustained heating and cooling. Its disadvantages are installation cost, reduced mobility and possible professional-work requirements.

Rooftop RV air conditioner

An RV rooftop unit is the more natural solution where the vehicle already has the required roof opening and electrical infrastructure. It is not useful for tent camping or a temporary workshop.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Other battery-powered AC products

Products such as ZERO BREEZE-style battery ACs may be easier to carry, but compare cooling output, battery capacity, hose arrangement, noise, support and runtime rather than assuming smaller means equivalent.

Is the EcoFlow WAVE 3 worth it?

The WAVE 3 is worth considering when the problem is specifically portable climate control without permanent installation. It is a strong choice for a small, reasonably sealed space where battery, solar or vehicle charging has genuine value.

It is difficult to justify as a normal household air conditioner. A conventional dual-hose model, portable split system or mini-split will usually make more sense when the unit can remain in one place and mains power is available. The total WAVE 3 system cost can include the base appliance, add-on battery, seals, extra ducting, solar panels, charging equipment and condensate accessories. Current prices and bundle contents vary by region and promotion, so check the official listing and confirm whether the selected package includes the battery.

R290 refrigerant has a lower global-warming impact than many older refrigerants, but that alone does not establish a complete environmental advantage. Battery production, electricity source, product life, repairability and replacement parts also matter.
