Reports published in July 2025 said a firmware update changed how some Echelon connected-fitness machines work offline. Affected owners reported that equipment began contacting Echelon’s servers during startup or operation, lost some offline metrics or manual-workout functions, and stopped working with third-party tools such as QZ, which can connect compatible equipment to Zwift and other platforms.
The evidence does not show that every Echelon machine was affected identically, or that every device became completely unusable without internet access. As of August 18, 2026, the most accurate description is a reported firmware-induced shift toward always-online operation on some equipment.

What changed after the Echelon update?
According to reporting by Ars Technica, Roberto Viola, the developer behind QZ, said some Echelon machines began contacting Echelon servers at startup and requesting a temporary authorization or unlock response.
Owners reported consequences including:
- Loss of some basic workout metrics when offline
- Changes to manual or Freestyle workouts
- Reduced or unavailable resistance, incline, or workout-recording functions
- Failure of Bluetooth-based connections to QZ and other third-party applications
These reports describe behavior on affected machines, not a verified universal change to every Echelon product. Echelon’s public documentation reviewed for this article explains how to install firmware but does not acknowledge the reported server-authentication change or provide a complete model-by-model impact list.

“Offline” can mean several different things
A machine can remain physically usable while losing important connected features. When evaluating the impact, separate these questions:
| Capability | What to check |
|---|---|
| Physical movement | Can the bike, treadmill, or rower still be used? |
| Metrics | Are speed, cadence, distance, pace, power, incline, or resistance displayed? |
| Controls | Can resistance or incline be changed normally? |
| Local recording | Can a workout be recorded without an internet connection? |
| Bluetooth | Does the equipment remain discoverable to a phone or tablet? |
| Third-party apps | Can QZ, Zwift, Peloton, Rouvy, Strava, Apple Health, or Garmin receive data? |
| Startup | Will the equipment operate if it cannot reach Echelon’s servers? |
“The belt still moves” or “the pedals still turn” is therefore not the same as retaining full offline functionality.
Does Echelon require a paid membership?
Not necessarily. Echelon’s support documentation says equipment can be used in Freestyle mode without a membership. It also says the equipment must connect to the Echelon Fit app and Bluetooth for resistance to register, at least for the functions described on that page.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
That distinction matters: no paid membership does not necessarily mean no app, Bluetooth, internet, or Echelon account dependency. Ars Technica reported that Echelon’s subscription app started at $40 per month in July 2025. That was a historical price report, not a verified current price for September 2026.
Which Echelon products are affected?
No complete public list establishes every affected model and firmware revision. Reports and compatibility documentation involve several categories of equipment, including Echelon bikes, EX-series models, Stride treadmills, rowers, and machines with mounted tablets.
Do not assume that a tablet update and an equipment update are the same thing. Echelon treats them separately:
- Equipment firmware is updated through the Echelon Fit app and the paired machine.
- Tablet firmware has its own version information and update references.
- Echelon published a model-specific notice for Stride 5s and 7s.
QZ’s compatibility documentation lists models including the EX-3, EX-4s, EX-5, EX-5s, and EX-7s, while listing the EX-8s separately as unsupported. That is useful for identifying potential third-party workflows, but it is not an official Echelon compatibility matrix and does not prove that all listed models received the same firmware or experienced the same behavior.

Why QZ users were affected
QZ, formerly associated with the qDomyos-Zwift project, is third-party software that reads exercise-equipment data and routes it to services such as Zwift, Peloton, Rouvy, and other training platforms. It can also support features such as data routing and, on compatible equipment, automatic resistance or incline control.
The connection has several stages:
- The exercise machine must expose the necessary Bluetooth data.
- QZ must discover and read that data.
- QZ must translate or relay it to the target service.
- The target service must accept the resulting connection and metrics.
If an update prevents the machine from broadcasting data or changes how Bluetooth pairing works, QZ cannot repair the problem from the app side. The software may be installed correctly and still receive nothing.
The reported outcome was that QZ compatibility stopped working for some owners after the update. That does not prove Echelon specifically designed the firmware to target QZ. Echelon sells both equipment and subscription software, and QZ can make some Echelon hardware useful with competing platforms, but the commercial motive remains unverified. Ars Technica reported that Echelon did not respond to its request for comment.
What Echelon’s official update instructions say
For equipment without a mounted tablet, Echelon’s documented update path is:
- Log in to the Echelon Fit app.
- Open Me.
- Select the gear or cog icon.
- Choose Firmware Update.
- Select Connect Device and pair the equipment.
- Choose Check for update.
- Install the update if one is offered.
- Unplug the equipment for 30 seconds, then reconnect it.
For tablet firmware, Echelon says to open the app’s More area—or, in newer versions, Me followed by the gear icon—and scroll to the bottom to view app and tablet firmware information. If the version is missing or marked TBD, Echelon directs users to contact support.
These pages document installation. They do not provide a general consumer rollback procedure or explain the reported server requirement.
What owners should do before updating
If third-party compatibility or offline operation matters, document the current setup before accepting an update.

Should you update?
There is no universal answer because the trade-off depends on how the equipment is used.
Consider delaying the update if:
- QZ or another third-party app is central to your workouts.
- The machine currently works acceptably without internet access.
- You depend on Zwift, Peloton, or another competing platform.
- You have not recorded the current firmware and app versions.
- Your workout location has unreliable internet.
An update may make sense if:
- You primarily use Echelon’s own classes and app.
- The update addresses a known fault or security issue.
- Your machine is currently unusable or requires the update for support.
- You accept continued reliance on Echelon’s software and servers.
- Third-party Bluetooth compatibility is not important to you.
Before delaying an update, check the effect on warranty support, safety notices, and security. There is also no guarantee that an older firmware version will remain compatible with future phones, apps, or services.
Can the firmware be rolled back?
Echelon’s official pages identified here explain installation but do not publish a general consumer rollback method. Do not assume that a factory reset, app removal, or internet-blocking technique will restore the previous behavior.
Later secondary reporting, including TechSpot’s coverage, described unofficial reverse-engineering efforts and an alleged attempt to restore offline access. Such work is not an Echelon-approved fix. Unofficial firmware or hardware modifications may create risks involving warranty coverage, malware, account access, permanent damage, or unsafe operation.
Those risks are especially serious for motorized treadmills. A software workaround that restores data may not restore manufacturer-tested speed, incline, emergency-stop, or control behavior.

If a machine depends on a rotating server-issued authorization, a prolonged internet outage, account failure, authentication problem, firmware-server outage, or permanent service shutdown could impair its operation. That is a risk implied by the reported behavior, not an official Echelon end-of-service policy.

These scenarios are different:
- Temporary internet outage: Local connectivity may return when the connection is restored.
- Account or authentication failure: The equipment may be online but unable to obtain authorization.
- App outage: The Echelon application may prevent pairing or recording.
- Firmware-server outage: Updates or authorization requests may fail.
- Permanent service discontinuation: Cloud-dependent functions could become unavailable indefinitely.
The incident is therefore a reminder that owning connected hardware does not always mean owning an independent, locally functional product.
What prospective buyers should check
Before buying connected-fitness equipment, ask the manufacturer for specific answers rather than relying on labels such as “smart” or “membership optional.” Check whether:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Basic metrics work without an account or internet connection
- The machine exposes Bluetooth FTMS or another documented local protocol
- Resistance and incline controls work offline
- A physical console can operate independently of cloud services
- Firmware updates can be declined or reversed
- Third-party applications are officially supported
- The manufacturer has published an end-of-service policy
- Offline behavior is documented for the exact model, not just the product family
No connected-fitness brand can be guaranteed to remain independent of cloud services forever. The most reliable buying criterion is documented local functionality and interoperability—not screen size, class selection, or subscription price alone.
Alternatives for current owners
Stay with Echelon’s official ecosystem
This is the simplest option for owners who value Echelon classes, supported firmware, and a single integrated experience. The trade-off is continued dependence on Echelon’s app, account systems, and servers.
Use QZ where compatibility remains available
QZ may still be useful with supported Echelon models and firmware, but compatibility can vary by machine, operating system, app version, and manufacturer update. QZ is an independent project and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Echelon or subscription services.
Replace the hardware
Replacement makes sense only for owners who consider offline operation or third-party interoperability essential enough to justify the cost. No replacement should be described as permanently future-proof; those capabilities can change across the connected-fitness market.
The bottom line
The July 2025 reports support a serious ownership warning, but not the claim that every Echelon machine was universally “bricked.” Some affected equipment reportedly became more dependent on Echelon’s servers and stopped exposing the Bluetooth behavior needed by QZ and similar tools. Echelon’s own documentation still describes Freestyle use without a paid membership, while also requiring its app and Bluetooth for some functions.
Owners who rely on offline workouts or third-party apps should record their exact model and firmware, test the current setup, and seek model-specific confirmation before updating. There is no general official rollback process identified in the available documentation.
