Durant Businesses Face Challenges During Road Construction

Local reporting describes business difficulty during an earlier University Boulevard project, while newer Durant street and bridge projects have separate scopes and schedules.

Local reporting confirms that road construction has made it harder for some Durant businesses to stay open, but it does not quantify lost sales or identify the businesses affected. The clearest account concerns the University Boulevard project underway from roughly 2021 to 2023. Separate 2026 work includes University Boulevard rehabilitation and the US-69 bridge replacement; their schedules and traffic conditions should not be treated as one continuous project.

What local reporting establishes about business disruption

In a September 29, 2023 report, KXII said many businesses struggled to stay open during construction on University Boulevard, which had been underway for about two years. That is a qualitative report of disruption, not a measured economic impact: the story named no affected businesses and gave no closure count, sales data, or loss estimate. It also did not report what steps businesses took or whether they later recovered.

KXII reported that the city had paid $3.6 million on the University Boulevard project as of September 25, 2023, with a final payment expected in November. That figure concerns project spending, not losses experienced by businesses. KXII’s September 2023 report.

Which Durant projects are being discussed?

The reporting describes several distinct projects. A prior University Boulevard construction project, a later University Boulevard rehabilitation, planning for Main Street and Radio Road work, and the US-69 bridge replacement have different scopes and timelines.

Public Works Director Phillip Hightower described the final road pour and substantial completion. In September 2023, substantial completion was set for October 29, followed by inspection and a punch list.
University Boulevard rehabilitation The city’s January 2026 bid notice described work at two intersections and about 4,620 linear feet from 6th Avenue toward Bryan Drive, including work at 7th and 12th avenues. The notice described the intended scope and two-phase approach; it does not establish that work was completed.
Main Street Drainage installation delayed engineering, according to the Public Works Director. In June 2026, the city hoped to select a contractor in fall and begin early the following year. That was an expectation, not a confirmed current schedule.
Radio Road turn lanes KXII reported that the work had been bid. The June 2026 report did not establish a completion date.
US-69 bridges and ramps ODOT announced replacement of four bridges and associated on- and off-ramps over Main Street and Arkansas Street/Kiamichi Railroad. ODOT forecast an early-fall 2026 start and a little more than a year of work. KXII reported on October 5, 2026, that work was underway.

University Boulevard: the earlier disruption

The September 2023 story described the earlier University Boulevard project as nearing substantial completion. Hightower said the final road pour was underway and gave October 29 as the substantial-completion date, with inspection and a punch list to follow. Those details belong to that project and reporting period.

University Boulevard: separate 2026 rehabilitation

A City of Durant bid notice posted in January 2026 described rehabilitation of about 4,620 linear feet, from 6th Avenue toward Bryan Drive, with work at 7th and 12th avenues. Its plan divided the work into two phases and called for one lane closure at a time to limit closures, detours, and congestion. These are planned construction-management measures, not proof that the work followed that plan or is finished. City of Durant’s University Boulevard rehabilitation bid notice.

Main Street and Radio Road

In June 2026, Hightower told KXII, “Everybody wants to know when Main Street’s coming on,” and said drainage work had slowed progress: “There is a lot of drainage that has to go be put in, and that’s what’s taken long.” The city said engineering was about 90% complete and hoped to choose a contractor in fall and start early the following year. These were plans described at that time, not a verified schedule today. The same report said Radio Road turn-lane work had been bid. KXII’s June 2026 street-project update.

US-69 bridge replacement

ODOT announced on June 4, 2026, that commissioners approved a nearly $19 million project to replace four bridges and on- and off-ramps on US-69 over Main Street and Arkansas Street/Kiamichi Railroad in Durant. The agency forecast an early-fall start, a little more than a year of work, one lane in each direction, and some short-term ramp closures. These were forecasts when announced. ODOT’s June 4, 2026 announcement.

KXII reported on October 5, 2026, that the bridge project was underway and northbound traffic was narrowed to one lane between Arkansas Street and West Main Street. That dated update does not establish all current detours, ramp restrictions, or access conditions for individual businesses. Check current city and ODOT notices before traveling or advising customers. KXII’s October 5, 2026 update.

What customers and businesses should check

Project scope and anticipated lane arrangements do not answer whether a particular storefront is reachable today. Restrictions can vary by block, direction, phase, and time. Before making a trip, confirm the route and entrance with the business and consult current local traffic notices.

  • Ask the business which entrance, parking area, or approach is currently usable.
  • Check current lane and ramp restrictions for the specific route, rather than relying on an older project announcement.
  • Allow for changing traffic control around active work and follow posted signs and worker directions.

Durant’s street-closing code says residents and businesses within a closed area may travel through it, when possible, at their own risk. It also requires traffic-control devices when street or utility work takes place under traffic. This language is not a guarantee that every business remains accessible during construction. Market Square concerns are not a construction announcement

In March 2026, KXII reported that business owners and residents raised congestion and limited-parking concerns around Market Square. City Manager Pam Polk said signage and downtown beautification had also come up, but that no final plan or funding was in place at the time. This was a discussion of concerns, not an announced construction project. KXII’s March 2026 Market Square report.
