Drill-press jigs help guide a bit, position a workpiece, or adapt a press for a secondary task such as sanding or mortising. The right choice depends on the operation, the stock, and the specific drill press; no single jig suits every setup.
What a drill-press jig does
A jig is a fixture designed around a particular operation. Some guide the drill or locate the workpiece so holes land consistently. Others support work such as sanding or mortising with a suitable attachment. A jig does not replace safe clamping or confirm that an accessory fits your machine.
In woodworking, the term generally refers to shop fixtures and attachments. It also has an industrial meaning: production cross-hole jigs can locate and clamp round or hex stock while guiding a drill. Heinrich describes fixtures of this kind, which are specialized production equipment rather than typical woodworking accessories: Heinrich cross-hole drill jigs.
Common drill-press jigs and attachments
Universal and self-centering drilling jigs
These fixtures position stock and guide the bit through bushings. Depending on the design, they can help drill centered or offset holes and repeat a setup across multiple pieces. Harvey Industries’ support documentation for Bridge City Tool Works’ DJ-3 says it accepts two drill bushings, supports nine drilling operations, and has a maximum drill size of 1/2 inch (13 mm). The manufacturer lists self-centering capacity for stock up to 12-13/32 inches (315 mm) wide and off-center drilling up to 60 mm from center; it also says the jaws can hold cylindrical stock and spheres. These are published product specifications, not independent test results. Check the exact capacity and setup instructions before use: DJ-3 manufacturer documentation.

- Attaches to all 3/8" and 1/2" cordless drills. It also includes a 3/8" capacity chuck with key.
- Multiple drilling angle settings of 45, 60, 75, and 90 degrees. Each setting locks into place ensuring total accuracy.
- Self-Centerting base to accommodate drilling any round stock up to 3" inches in diameter.
- Portable Drill Press Alternative. Compact and lightweight design allows you to achieve drill press precision anywhere without the bulk of a stationary drill press.
Fences and stops
A fence gives stock a consistent reference edge; a stop sets how far it travels or where a repeated hole falls. Together, they can speed up repeated drilling, but only if they are secured and checked against the actual workpiece and drill location. A loose fence or incorrectly set stop can produce misplaced holes or let stock shift.
Circle guides
A circle guide constrains a workpiece or cutter path for a circular operation. Setup varies by product, so follow the guide’s own installation and safety instructions rather than assuming it mounts or operates like a fence. The Circle Perfect Tools CPDP-104 manual is an example of a drill-press circle guide: CPDP-104 manual.

Sanding drums and auxiliary tables
A chuck-mounted sanding drum can smooth curves. An auxiliary table can support the work and expose more of the abrasive surface, while a fence or pattern guide can help control the workpiece. Michael Fortune’s Fine Woodworking article discusses sanding on a drill press and cautions that drill-press bearings are not designed for heavy sideways pressure; his discussion describes light-to-medium lateral pressure, not a general rating for every machine. Follow your press manufacturer’s limits and the sanding accessory’s instructions: Michael Fortune, “Sanding on the Drill Press”.
Mortising attachments
A compatible mortising attachment can let some drill presses perform mortising work. Compatibility is machine-specific, and an attachment is not automatically equivalent to a dedicated mortiser. Consult both manuals for mounting requirements, capacity, and safe operation. The South African Department of Basic Education’s woodworking manual discusses mortising and drum sanding as operations possible with suitable attachments: Woodworking Term 1 Grade 8.

How to choose a jig for your job
Start with the operation, then check whether the jig and press can safely accommodate the stock and setup. Compare the relevant factors before buying or making a fixture:
- Operation: Decide whether you need guided drilling, repeatable hole placement, centered or offset holes, circle work, sanding, or mortising.
- Workpiece: Check its shape, width or diameter, thickness, and whether it can be held securely throughout the operation.
- Guidance and repeatability: Look for the features the job needs, such as bushings, a fence, a stop, or adjustable jaws. Confirm the fixture’s adjustment range against your work.
- Mounting and clearance: Check the table slots or clamp arrangement, table size, available clearance, and the accessory’s spindle or chuck requirements against your press manual.
- Secure setup: Make sure the fixture can be mounted firmly and the workpiece can be restrained against rotation and movement.
The DJ-3’s specifications are one product’s published range, not a universal fit guarantee. Compatibility and current availability for any particular drill press must be verified with the relevant manuals and manufacturer information.

- All metal construction and large ½” (13mm) keyed chuck for a heavy-duty professional drilling application
- Infinite angle adjustments between 0° and 60° for drilling. MAKE SURE BOTH KNOB AND HANDLE ARE PROPERLY TIGHTENED BEFORE USE.
- Included optional non-slip base pads prevent movement and protect the workpiece. INSTALLING SLIP PADS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED TO PREVENT MOVEMENT.
- Dual Spring Design Increases balance and control while drilling
- Built in V-groove channel holds and centers round stock for drilling
Set up and use a drill-press jig safely
- Check compatibility. Read the drill-press and jig or attachment manuals. Verify mounting, clearance, workpiece limits, and any chuck or spindle restrictions for the planned operation.
- Secure the fixture. Mount the jig firmly to the table using its intended hardware or clamping method. The Harbor Freight 92046 instruction-sheet transcript specifically directs users to secure the jig and center it directly below the drill. That is product-specific guidance from a 2005 instruction sheet transcript hosted by Manualzilla, not a current general safety standard: Harbor Freight 92046 instruction-sheet transcript.
- Position and restrain the stock. Check that the workpiece seats properly, then secure it with suitable clamps, tiedowns, a vise, or the fixture’s intended holding method. The Harbor Freight transcript warns against using stock that does not seat properly. The South African Department of Basic Education manual likewise says the workpiece should be secured or clamped in a vise resting on the table and that the table clamp should be secure.
- Check alignment before drilling. Confirm that the bit meets the intended location and that the stock, stop, fence, and jig cannot shift. Recheck the setup when changing workpiece size or position.
- Use the attachment only for its intended operation. For sanding or mortising, follow the accessory instructions and the press manufacturer’s limits; do not assume a setup suitable for drilling is suitable for sideways sanding loads or another operation.
Why jigs are not interchangeable
A bushing guides a drill bit, a fence or stop locates stock, a circle guide constrains circular movement, and a sanding table supports work against an abrasive drum. A mortising attachment changes the operation the press performs. Each addresses a different problem, so choose by the task and verify the fixture’s fit and safe workholding rather than buying a generic “drill-press jig” for every job.
