WOOD Magazine’s drill and router bit case is a wall-hung cabinet measuring 24 inches wide by 10 inches deep by 36 inches high. Its clear acrylic door makes bits visible while helping keep out dust, and its face-frame and door-frame joinery uses half-laps cut with a dado blade. The plan was featured in WOOD Issue 198 in July 2010; the publisher’s plan page was updated January 11, 2024.
What the WOOD plan includes
The design is a wall-mounted storage case intended to organize drill and router bits in a compact footprint. Its overall dimensions are 24 inches wide × 10 inches deep × 36 inches high. Check the proposed location and available wall space before building or changing those dimensions.
A clear acrylic door lets you see the contents without opening the case and is intended to keep dust out. The face frame and the frame around the door are described as half-lap construction, with the joints cut using a dado blade. The plan does not identify a particular blade brand or model.

Choose a design that fits your shop
Other published plans take different approaches to bit storage. Compare them by wall footprint, visibility and dust protection, whether holders or shelves can be removed, the shank sizes they accommodate, and whether they also store router accessories.

Plan the build around your bits and mounting location
- Measure the wall first. The WOOD case is 36 inches tall and 10 inches deep as well as 24 inches wide. Confirm the wall area and the intended mounting location before committing to that footprint or adapting it.
- Decide how you want to access bits. A clear door offers a view into the case; the alternatives document removable shelves or holders. Choose based on whether you prefer fixed organization or components that can be lifted out.
- Check bit and accessory needs. The Woodcraft instructions explicitly cover holders for ¼-inch and ½-inch router-bit shanks. For another design, verify its holder layout against the bits you own; do not assume every case accommodates every shank size or accessory.
- Confirm the required materials and instructions. The projects use different materials and construction details. Review the plan’s cut list and instructions before buying stock or choosing a substitute.
Tool implication of the WOOD plan
Because the plan describes half-lap joints cut with a dado blade, a table-saw dado blade set is the directly relevant task-enabling tool category. The cited project pages do not specify a brand or model. Follow the saw and blade manufacturers’ instructions and confirm that the dado setup is appropriate for your table saw.
