Announced at CES 2025, its ProLeap system uses retractable mechanical legs to negotiate qualifying two-step thresholds up to 6 cm (2.36 inches) high. For a single vertical step, Dreame’s stated maximum is 4.2 cm (about 1.65 inches).
That distinction matters. The X50 Ultra may help a robot move between rooms with door tracks or split-level transitions, but it cannot independently travel up an ordinary household staircase or cross every 6-cm ledge.

What Dreame introduced
The Dreame X50 Ultra Robot Vacuum and Mop is a premium automated cleaning system with vacuuming, mopping, automatic dust emptying, mop washing, drying, water refilling and cleaning-solution dispensing.
Dreame unveiled it at CES 2025. In the United States, the company announced availability from February 14, 2025, at a launch price of $1,699.99. The similarly named X50 Ultra Complete is a regional or bundle variant; its accessories, price, availability and warranty may differ, so the two should not automatically be treated as identical.

How ProLeap crosses thresholds
The X50 Ultra uses Dreame’s ProLeap system rather than relying only on conventional fixed wheels. Retractable mechanical legs or feet extend to help lift and propel the robot across a threshold. Dreame also describes shock absorption intended to reduce impact and noise.
Dreame calls this approach an industry-first mass-produced robotic-vacuum implementation, but that is a manufacturer claim rather than an independently established industry standard. The practical innovation is narrower and clearer: the robot is built to cross some low architectural transitions without being carried or given a ramp.
How high can the X50 Ultra climb?
| Obstacle | Dreame’s stated maximum |
|---|---|
| Qualifying two-step or double-layer threshold | Up to 6 cm (2.36 in) |
| Single vertical step | Up to 4.2 cm (about 1.65 in) |
| Gap required for the 6-cm two-step claim | More than 4 cm between steps |
The headline “up to 6 cm” therefore does not mean the X50 Ultra can climb a single 6-cm vertical wall. A sharp-edged step, narrow landing, unsuitable approach angle or irregular surface may fail even when the measured height appears acceptable. Dreame says these figures come from in-house laboratory testing and that actual performance varies with environmental conditions.

Potentially suitable transitions include door tracks, low raised thresholds, qualifying double-layer thresholds, some U-shaped furniture bases and small changes in floor height between rooms. The rating should not be extended to standard stairs, deep gaps, holes, slippery or unstable surfaces, narrow landings, or obstacles above the stated limits.

What happens when crossing fails?
Dreame’s FAQ acknowledges that the mechanical foot can become lodged when an obstacle’s height or shape exceeds the design specification. The robot may also make several direct attempts before switching to its mechanical-foot method.
- Measure the highest vertical face, not merely the total height across several layers.
- Check that a two-step transition has a gap greater than 4 cm and enough landing space.
- Remove nearby objects, furniture or trim that narrows the approach.
- Clean the wheels and sensors, and improve lighting around dark thresholds.
- Use the app’s map-editing or threshold controls if the robot repeatedly misidentifies the area.
- Add a small ramp when the transition is close to the limit.
- Restrict the robot from the area if it repeatedly becomes stuck, and do not force it over an oversized obstacle.
- Contact Dreame support if a foot remains stuck or stops deploying under conditions that previously worked.
Dreame also says dark thresholds can interfere with sensor or image-recognition estimates. A robot may misjudge whether a dark surface is passable, so color and lighting can matter as much as geometry.
Cleaning and navigation features

Dreame lists VersaLift DToF navigation, an AI RGB camera, 3D structured-light obstacle avoidance and LED guidance for darker environments. These systems can improve mapping and object detection, but obstacle avoidance is not perfect. Cables, reflective objects, dark surfaces, low furniture, pet messes and unusual thresholds can still create failure cases. Camera-based navigation may also matter to buyers who have privacy concerns.

Low furniture clearance
VersaLift lowers the navigation sensor so the robot can reach beneath some sofas, cabinets and other furniture. Dreame lists the robot at approximately 89 mm high with the sensor retracted and 111 mm with it raised.
Measure the actual clearance before buying. Protruding or rough undersides can scratch the robot when it uses low-clearance mode, according to Dreame’s warning. The robot is not equally low in every operating state.
Dock size and ownership requirements
The multifunction dock reduces daily work, but “self-cleaning” does not mean maintenance-free ownership. Users still need to clean tanks and filters, inspect brushes and wheels, replace mop pads and dust bags, refill consumables and check the threshold mechanism. Dreame advises using official cleaning solutions, which may increase running costs and limit consumable flexibility.
Key US-listed specifications include:
- Battery: 6,400 mAh.
- Claimed runtime: up to 220 minutes in Quiet Mode.
- Claimed coverage: approximately 205 square metres (2,208 square feet) on one charge.
- Robot weight: 4.53 kg.
- Dust box: 395 ml.
- Clean-water tank: 4.5 litres; used-water tank: 4.0 litres.
- Base station: 457 × 340 × 590 mm and 9.09 kg.

Setup and connectivity
The US manual is the authority for the exact setup sequence and current app labels. In general:
- Place the dock on a level surface with sufficient clearance for departure and return.
- Install the tanks, brushes, mop pads, dust bag and other included components.
- Charge the robot.
- Install the Dreamehome app and add the X50 Ultra.
- Connect through the supported 2.4-GHz Wi-Fi network; a dual-band router may require temporarily selecting that band.
- Run the initial mapping cycle after removing cables, clothing, toys and other loose objects.
- Measure thresholds and use map controls or virtual boundaries for areas the robot cannot reliably cross.
App controls and obstacle behavior can change with firmware updates and regional rollouts. Keep the app and firmware current, but do not assume every region receives identical features at the same time.

Who should buy it?
The X50 Ultra makes the strongest case in homes with several door thresholds or split-level transitions that regularly trap ordinary robot vacuums. Its dock automation is also valuable for buyers who want vacuuming and mopping to continue across more rooms with less manual intervention.
It is less compelling for a flat-floor home, a small apartment without room for a 590-mm-tall dock, or anyone who expects genuine staircase travel. If only one or two thresholds are problematic, a ramp paired with a less expensive robot may be cheaper and potentially more reliable. Carrying a robot between rooms can also be rational when cleaning is infrequent.
Before choosing it over a cheaper Dreame model or a competing Roborock or Ecovacs product, compare the actual threshold geometry, carpet and hard-floor mix, pet-hair needs, mopping expectations, dock footprint, 2.4-GHz Wi-Fi requirement, app controls, consumable costs, independent cleaning tests, return terms and warranty support.
Bottom line
The X50 Ultra’s meaningful innovation is threshold crossing, not staircase climbing. Dreame rates it for up to 6 cm only in a qualifying two-step configuration, while a single vertical step is limited to 4.2 cm. If your home has multiple transitions within those limits, ProLeap may justify the premium. If the floors are mostly flat—or the real obstacle is a normal staircase—a ramp or cheaper robot is likely the more sensible solution.
