Does Honey Help Plant Cuttings? What the Evidence Says

A 2025 study found mixed, plant-specific results when honey was tested with cuttings. Here’s what it does—and does not—show for home gardeners.

Honey is not a proven, general-purpose rooting hormone. A 2025 study tested it as an additive when propagating three nursery crops, with mixed, species- and treatment-specific results. The evidence does not support five broad garden benefits—or claims that honey is a reliable pest treatment, wound sealant, or soil amendment.

What did the 2025 study test?

Bowden and coauthors evaluated honey as a rooting adjuvant for cuttings of miniature rose (Rosa ‘MOORcap’), common camellia (Camellia japonica), and southern magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora ‘Little Gem’). The study examined treatments involving honey and indole-3-butyric acid (IBA), an auxin used in propagation. Its findings apply to those crops and experimental conditions, not to every garden plant. Read the study.

What were the results by plant?

Miniature rose

Adding honey to IBA did not increase root counts compared with IBA alone. The study therefore provides no basis for claiming that honey improves rooting in this rose under the tested conditions.

Common camellia

Honey type alone and auxin rate alone did not significantly affect rooting. Some combinations involving higher IBA rates increased root counts. That result does not show that honey by itself is an effective rooting treatment, nor does it establish a reliable benefit for camellias generally.

Burpee SuperSeed 36-Cell Reusable Seed Starting Tray for Indoor Seedlings
  • EASIER SEED STARTING: Our Burpee SuperSeed tray with 36 flexible pop-out cells is designed to simplify indoor seed starting for all your favorite vegetables, flowers and herbs. Just add seed starting mix, seeds, water and light to get growing! Rows are labeled alphanumerically for seedling identification with included Plant-o-Gram diagram. Tray dimensions: 11.5" x 10-3/8" x 2-1/4"
  • SMARTER WATERING SYSTEM: Molded corner slots in each cell improve drainage and soil aeration to set your seeds up for germination success. Deep channels in the watering tray draw excess away from the cells, while the raised perimeter edge keeps water contained in the tray - no spills! Seed tray side handles make it easy to lift and pour off excess water or check seedlings daily.
  • SIMPLER TRANSPLANTING: Soft food-grade silicone cells cradle seedlings and gently flex to pop out when it’s time to transplant into your outdoor garden! This system is specially designed to reduce stress on your seedlings, so you don't damage their roots. After transplanting, trays are easy to clean and reuse or simply store for next growing season. Top shelf dishwasher safe.
  • SEED STARTER TIP: Many favorite vegetables, including peppers and tomatoes, must be started indoors before warmer weather arrives. Start pepper seeds 8-10 weeks before your area’s average last frost date, and tomato seeds 6-8 weeks before last frost. Check your Burpee seed packets for instructions on when and how to plant any of your herb, flower and vegetable seeds.
  • 100% GUARANTEED: Burpee is committed to the success of all gardeners. We treat each order with care to ensure healthy seeds, plants, soil mixes and gardening supplies are packaged and sent in excellent condition. If you are unsatisfied with your purchase, we aim to make it right!

Southern magnolia

The study also included southern magnolia ‘Little Gem’. Its results are specific to the tested crop and treatments; they should not be generalized into a recommendation for magnolias or unrelated plants.

Should you use honey instead of rooting compound?

Not on the strength of this evidence. NC State Extension describes root-promoting compounds as common practice, particularly for difficult-to-root woody stem cuttings. These products are intended to affect rooting percentage, speed, uniformity, and root number or quality. The honey study does not show that honey matches those compounds. See NC State Extension guidance.

Extension responses addressing honey as a rooting aid are also cautious: one does not recommend the practice given limited genuine research, and another says honey is of no real value for rooting rose cuttings in water. These are practical extension answers, not controlled trials, but they align with avoiding broad claims about honey’s effectiveness. Read the Ask Extension responses.

Can honey be tried on a cutting?

A gardener can treat it as an experiment, not a dependable substitute for a propagation product. If you want to compare treatments, use similar cuttings of the same plant and keep the growing conditions alike; compare honey-treated cuttings with untreated ones, and, where appropriate, a product labeled for propagation. Track whether cuttings root and the number and quality of roots rather than assuming success from a single cutting. The 2025 findings do not identify a best honey type or establish a household recipe.

What about pests, pruning wounds, or soil?

The horticultural sources reviewed here do not establish honey as a pest treatment, a way to seal plant wounds, or a general soil amendment. That is a limit of the available evidence, not proof that every conceivable use has been disproved. Human wound-care claims, if encountered, are not evidence that honey benefits plant propagation or plant health.
