2. The Huntington: botanical gardens within a broader cultural visit
The Huntington in San Marino combines 130 acres of botanical gardens with art and library collections. Its Japanese Garden includes a historic Japanese landscape, a ceremonial teahouse, a Zen Court, bonsai collection and the Japanese Heritage Shōya House. That range makes the grounds more than a quick garden stop: visitors can plan around several distinct collections.
The Huntington’s Botanical Gardens director, Nicole Cavender, describes the plant collection as a connection among the institution’s three collections: “If you can believe it, we have over 83,000 living plants here. The Botanical Gardens are the entryway to The Huntington, connecting the three collections—the art, library, and plant collections.” See the Botanical Gardens overview for the institution’s description.
