Epsom salt can help a plant with a confirmed magnesium deficiency, but there is no good evidence that it makes already healthy, adequately nourished plants grow more or produce larger blooms. It is magnesium sulfate—not a complete fertilizer—and routine application can add unwanted salts or contribute to nutrient imbalance. Test or diagnose before using it.
What Epsom salt does for plants
Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate, so it supplies magnesium and sulfur. Magnesium supports plant processes including photosynthesis and carbohydrate transport, but adding more does not benefit a plant that already has enough. It also does not replace a complete fertilizer program.
Use it as a targeted amendment only when a soil or growing-media test, or a reliable plant diagnosis, indicates magnesium deficiency. Conditions differ among garden soils, containers, and greenhouse growing media, so a rate suitable in one setting may be inappropriate in another.
Does it increase growth or bloom size?
University Extension guidance does not support using Epsom salt as a general bloom booster. Washington State University Extension reports no evidence that excessive Epsom salt produces more flowers, leaves, or chlorophyll under normal conditions. Iowa State Extension likewise reports no scientific evidence that it improves seed germination or the uptake of other nutrients.

There is an important distinction: correcting a real magnesium deficiency may help a struggling plant resume healthier growth. That is not evidence that extra magnesium makes a sufficiently nourished plant grow beyond its normal potential or produce larger blooms.
How to spot a possible magnesium deficiency
A common clue is interveinal chlorosis: yellowing between the veins while the veins stay greener. It often appears first on older or lower leaves because magnesium can move within the plant. More advanced symptoms may include spotting, dead tissue, or purpling.

These signs are not proof of magnesium deficiency. Other growing problems can look similar, so do not treat a single symptom as a diagnosis. Check local soil or growing-media test results, or seek a reliable plant diagnosis before adding magnesium.
How to decide whether to apply it
- Check for evidence of need. Review a soil or growing-media test; do not use Epsom salt as a general plant tonic.
- Match the recommendation to the plant and setting. If a deficiency is established, follow crop-specific guidance and product labeling. A greenhouse rate is not a universal home-garden recipe.
- Avoid repeated applications without a reason. Excess Epsom salt can add unnecessary salts to soil, and too much magnesium can interfere with calcium uptake.
Why greenhouse rates are not garden-bed instructions
UMass Extension’s May 1, 2026 greenhouse tomato guidance gives 2 pounds per 100 gallons of water to correct magnesium deficiency. In the specific prevention context where fertilizers without magnesium are used, it gives 1 pound per 100 gallons monthly. Those figures apply to the stated greenhouse tomato context; they should not be copied as a dosage for garden beds, flowers, or every plant.

Do not use it to treat blossom-end rot
Blossom-end rot is associated with inadequate calcium uptake, not a magnesium deficiency that Epsom salt cures. Adding magnesium may interfere with calcium absorption, and excess magnesium can aggravate the problem. Do not apply Epsom salt as a blossom-end-rot remedy; address calcium uptake and growing conditions instead.

Think of Epsom salt as a possible source of magnesium and sulfur for a diagnosed need—not as a bloom-size or growth enhancer. Confirm that magnesium is lacking, then use guidance suited to the crop and growing medium. Without that evidence, adding it can create avoidable salt and nutrient problems without delivering the promised flowers.
