Does Epsom Salt Help Fruit Trees? What the Evidence Supports

Epsom salt can correct a fruit tree’s magnesium shortage when testing and local crop guidance support it. It is not a seven-benefit booster for healthy trees.

Epsom salt can help a fruit tree when it needs magnesium; it is not a general-purpose fruiting booster. The evidence supports one main use: supplying magnesium when testing or crop-specific advice indicates a deficiency. It does not establish seven universal benefits for healthy trees.

What Epsom salt does for a fruit tree

Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate. It supplies magnesium, a nutrient fruit trees need, but it is not a complete fertilizer and does not address every cause of poor growth or fruiting. Adding it when a tree already has enough magnesium is not supported as a way to improve sweetness, flowering, rooting, pest or disease resistance, or yield.

The defensible reasons to use it are therefore variations on one: to correct a confirmed or locally diagnosed magnesium shortage, using a treatment suited to the crop and conditions.

How to tell whether a tree may need magnesium

Look for a symptom pattern, not a diagnosis by itself

Magnesium deficiency can cause interveinal chlorosis: the tissue between leaf veins turns pale while the veins remain greener, often first on older leaves. In apples, symptoms may develop into light-green blotches that spread toward leaf margins, turn tan or brown, and lead to leaf drop, according to the University of Kentucky Fruit Scouting Guide.

Similar-looking leaf symptoms can have other causes, so appearance alone does not prove magnesium is lacking. Washington State University notes that excess soil calcium or potassium can compete with magnesium uptake, and that too much lime can induce deficiency. The underlying issue may be nutrient balance or soil management, not simply a shortage that more Epsom salt will fix. WSU’s tree-fruit nutrition guidance also describes leaf-tissue analysis as a way to identify low magnesium.

Use testing and local crop advice

Before applying magnesium, use an appropriate soil or leaf analysis and consult guidance for the fruit crop and growing region. Soil pH matters: if it needs to rise, dolomitic lime may be appropriate in some situations because it supplies magnesium while raising pH. If pH should not be raised, a non-liming magnesium source may be preferable. The right choice depends on the test results and local recommendation.

How much Epsom salt should you use?

There is no single backyard rate established here for every fruit tree. Rate and application method depend on crop, soil conditions, diagnosis, and regional guidance. Do not convert an orchard spray rate into a casual per-tree dose.

For mature orchards, the University of Vermont Fruit Program describes three foliar sprays at 15 pounds per 100 gallons of dilute-spray equivalent, 10–14 days apart beginning at petal fall, as potentially adequate for many fruit crops. That is an orchard recommendation, not a default rate for a home garden; follow crop- and region-specific instructions rather than scaling it without guidance.

Soil application or foliar spray?

Soil treatment

A soil application may be considered when testing and local recommendations support it. The appropriate magnesium source depends in part on whether raising soil pH is desirable. The University of Kentucky apple guide lists magnesium sulfate applied to foliage and/or soil among management options, and notes dolomitic lime where soil pH needs to rise.

Foliar treatment

A foliar spray supplies magnesium through the leaves and can be a temporary supplement; it does not replace adequate soil magnesium. The Montana State University Western Agricultural Research Center describes sprays after petal fall every two to three weeks for three applications when soil magnesium is adequate but leaf samples indicate deficiency. It also advises addressing irrigation issues. Apply that schedule only where it fits the crop and regional recommendation.

For plums in Maine, the University of Maine Cooperative Extension says a spring foliar application of magnesium sulfate can correct deficiency and describes starting sprays at petal fall. That regional plum guidance does not establish a rate for all fruit trees.

When can spraying cause problems?

  • Hot or slow-drying conditions: Vermont’s guidance warns that foliage damage may be severe when sprays are applied in high temperatures or when drying is slow.
  • Incompatible tank mixes: Cornell Cooperative Extension’s 2025 Tree Fruit Production Guide reports that a tank mix of urea and Epsom salts has sometimes injured young apple foliage. If both are needed, it advises applying them separately.
  • Wrong crop or region: Recommendations differ with crop, soil pH, calcium status, and local conditions. Florida citrus guidance, for example, distinguishes magnesium approaches according to pH and calcium status; it should not be transferred to other fruit crops or regions. See the University of Florida’s 2026–2029 Florida Citrus Production Guide.

So, are there seven reasons to use Epsom salt on fruit trees?

Not as seven general benefits. The sources support targeted magnesium correction when a test or crop-specific guidance indicates a need, with soil or foliar treatment chosen for the tree and conditions. They do not support adding Epsom salt to healthy, magnesium-sufficient trees to boost fruit quality or production.
