Does Castor Oil Keep Lawn Moles Away? How to Use It—and When to Trap

Castor oil may temporarily repel some lawn moles, but it is not a permanent or dependable fix. Learn how to identify the pest, apply a labeled product, avoid unsafe remedies, and switch to trapping when necessary.

Castor oil may temporarily repel some lawn moles, but it is not a reliable or permanent solution. Small field studies and university extension guidance suggest that certain castor-oil products can reduce activity—especially from eastern moles—for several weeks, but results vary with the product, soil, rainfall, irrigation, and possibly the mole species. Castor oil displaces moles; it does not remove or kill them.

First, make sure the animal is actually a mole

Before buying a repellent, identify the damage. Moles are small, underground, insect-eating mammals. They primarily consume earthworms, grubs, insects, and other soil invertebrates. Their characteristic damage comes from digging: tunnels lift turf, disturb roots, and create raised ridges or mounds. They generally do not chew garden plants.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Activity is often easier to see after rain or watering because moist soil is easier to excavate. That also means a sudden increase or decrease in visible tunnels can be caused by soil moisture and weather rather than by a treatment.

What you see More likely culprit
Raised ridges just below the surface, circular or volcano-like soil mounds, and little evidence of chewing Mole
Surface runways through grass, clipped vegetation, gnawed roots, damaged bulbs, or bark chewing Vole
Crescent- or fan-shaped mounds, plant roots or underground stems being eaten, and plugged openings Pocket gopher
Small surface holes, scattered soil, or digging near turf and beds Skunk, raccoon, squirrel, or another animal

Voles may use existing mole tunnels, so homeowners sometimes blame moles for plant damage caused by voles. Pocket gophers also require different control methods. A castor-oil product marketed for more than one pest should not be assumed to work equally well against every species listed on its package.

Does castor oil really repel moles?

The most accurate answer is sometimes, temporarily, and inconsistently. The evidence is limited, and much of it concerns eastern moles rather than western U.S. species.

What the field studies found

  • 1995 Michigan study: A product containing 65% castor oil was tested on seven preliminary lawns and 17 additional lawns. Researchers reported that visible activity stopped on treated lawns for 30 days at most sites and for 65 days at one site. This was a small study involving a specific product and eastern moles, so it does not establish that every castor-oil formulation will perform the same way. Read the Michigan field study.
  • 2002 Kentucky study: The product Molexit produced some reduction in burrowing activity in the larger experiment, but the pilot study found no treatment difference. Most treated sites resumed activity within six weeks, and heavy precipitation was associated with renewed activity. Read the Kentucky study.

Extension organizations reach a similarly cautious conclusion. UC Integrated Pest Management describes commercial castor-oil repellents as having some efficacy for eastern moles, while noting that the cited published research had not established effectiveness for western mole species. The Internet Center for Wildlife Damage Management describes castor oil as having minor effectiveness and notes that liquid repellents may perform better than some preliminary granular formulations. Rutgers Extension says consistent scientific results have not been demonstrated.

A reduction in visible tunnels is not automatically proof that castor oil worked. Moles may have moved elsewhere, activity may have changed with rainfall or drought, or the soil may have become less suitable for digging. Conversely, rainfall and extensive irrigation may reduce the persistence of some repellents by moving or leaching them through the soil.

What castor oil does—and does not—do

At best, castor oil makes a treated area unattractive and encourages a mole to use another part of the property. It does not eliminate the mole, destroy an entire food supply, or permanently protect the yard. Claims that castor oil makes earthworms poisonous or damages a mole’s skin should not be treated as established biology unless supported by specific research; they are often marketing explanations rather than proven mechanisms.

Repellency can also transfer the problem. A mole pushed out of one lawn may tunnel into another section of the same yard or a neighboring property. That may be acceptable as a short-term, nonlethal attempt to protect a small area, but it is not the same as dependable removal.

How to use a castor-oil mole repellent

If you want to try this approach, use a commercial product whose label specifically permits use against moles. Do not treat a homemade mixture of castor oil, dish soap, and water as a scientifically validated substitute. Liquid sprays, ready-to-use products, concentrates, and granules can have different active-ingredient concentrations, coverage rates, watering requirements, and permitted sites.

1. Confirm that the tunnel is active

Find a raised surface tunnel and compress or flatten a short section of it. Check the area approximately 24 hours later. If the ridge has been raised again, the tunnel is active. This simple test is also useful if you are planning to trap, because a fresh mound or old surface run is not necessarily being used now. See the University of Minnesota’s active-tunnel and trapping guidance.

  • Moles are specifically listed as a target pest.
  • Your intended site—such as lawn, ornamental bed, or bulb bed—is permitted.
  • Edible gardens, vegetables, herbs, fruit, ponds, drains, and waterways are addressed appropriately.
  • The required coverage rate and application equipment are clear.
  • The label says whether the product must be watered in, and how much water is required.
  • Reapplication timing and maximum application limits are followed.
  • Protective equipment, skin and eye precautions, and child and pet instructions are understood.
  • The product’s registration or minimum-risk status is appropriate for your state.

Pesticide labels are legally enforceable. Under federal pesticide law, using a pesticide inconsistently with its labeling is unlawful. The EPA explains how pesticide labels function, and its guidance on pesticide registration explains why state requirements also matter. A product’s status in one state does not automatically establish that it may be sold or used in another; for example, Virginia Extension warns that products must be registered and approved for use in Virginia.

3. Treat the area you need to protect

Do not pour a little pure castor oil into one molehill and expect the entire tunnel system to become repellent. Moles use extensive underground networks. A single treated hole does not create a repellent zone, and the animal can simply reroute around it.

For a liquid product, the label will generally require thorough coverage of the area being protected rather than treatment of only visible mounds. Some granular products may give staged directions that move treatment from an unaffected area toward an exit boundary. Follow the label if it contains such instructions, but do not make a strategy of deliberately pushing the animal into a neighbor’s yard. That merely transfers the nuisance and may conflict with local pesticide or wildlife rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Water exactly as directed

Watering instructions are product-specific. Too little water may prevent a product from reaching the intended soil layer; too much irrigation or heavy rain may dilute or leach a repellent.

For context, the Internet Center for Wildlife Damage Management describes a liquid treatment that uses approximately one-half inch of water before application and at least one inch afterward, while warning that extensive irrigation can leach the repellent away. That is guidance for the described treatment—not a universal recipe.

Current manufacturer examples show why the package directions matter:

  • Bonide MoleMax ready-to-spray liquid: The manufacturer’s directions say to water dry soil before application and soak the treated area with a hose or sprinkler for 15 minutes afterward. Bonide claims that one quart treats up to 10,000 square feet and may last up to three months. Those are claims for that specific product, not independent proof that all castor-oil products last three months. See the manufacturer’s current directions.
  • MoleMax granular example: A 2024 label lists 10% castor oil, directs application at one pound per 500 square feet, calls for reapplication every two to three months, and instructs users to water lightly for approximately 10–15 minutes. The label identifies the product as a FIFRA Section 25(b) minimum-risk product rather than an EPA-registered pesticide. Read the example granular label.

Do not use either example as a universal dosage. Confirm that the label on your actual container is current and covers your state, site, pest, and application method.

5. Monitor the result

For the next several weeks, record new ridges, new mounds, repaired test tunnels, rainfall, irrigation, and activity in untreated parts of the yard. Monitoring helps distinguish a real reduction from a weather-related pause or a shift in activity.

  • Fresh Small-Batch Bottling – We bottle in small batches to ensure your oil arrives exceptionally fresh, not aged in a warehouse. Rich color, natural scent, and full potency — every time.

If activity returns, do not keep increasing the dose or applying more frequently than the label allows. Repeated heavy watering may shorten persistence, and excessive pesticide use can increase runoff and exposure without improving control.

Should you make a castor-oil and dish-soap spray?

It is better not to present a homemade recipe as a proven treatment. Online recipes use widely different proportions of castor oil, dish soap, and water. Those mixtures are not standardized by the field studies above or supported by one authoritative product label.

Dish soap may help oil disperse through water, but that does not establish mole-repellent effectiveness, plant safety, soil safety, or legal compliance. An improvised mixture can also:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Separate or float instead of applying evenly.
  • Clog a sprayer.
  • Injure turf or ornamental plants.
  • Irritate skin and eyes.
  • Be applied to vegetables or herbs without an approved edible-crop use.
  • Run off into ponds, streams, storm drains, or other water.
  • Deliver an untested concentration or application rate.

A labeled commercial formulation is the more defensible choice if you want to test castor-oil repellency. Even then, expect temporary and variable results rather than guaranteed control.

Safety, labeling, and environmental limits

Natural does not mean risk-free

Castor oil is a familiar plant-derived ingredient, but a finished pesticide product can still contain other ingredients and carry safety warnings. For example, the cited MoleMax granular label warns of moderate eye irritation and possible skin irritation in some individuals. Wear the protective equipment specified on the label, avoid contact with concentrate, wash after handling, and keep people and pets away exactly as directed.

Do not make an unconditional claim that a product is safe for pets, children, wildlife, plants, or water. The defensible statement is that a manufacturer labels a particular product for use around people or pets when used as directed. Prevent access to concentrates, avoid drift and runoff, and follow any reentry instructions.

What FIFRA Section 25(b) means

Castor oil is among the active ingredients that may be used in certain FIFRA Section 25(b) minimum-risk pesticide products. EPA generally does not review or approve the efficacy of these exempt products in the same way it evaluates registered pesticides. The producer is responsible for determining whether the product meets the exemption requirements and has a compliant label. EPA explains minimum-risk pesticides here.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Therefore, 25(b) exempt does not mean EPA tested and proved the product effective. It also does not mean the product is automatically unregulated in every state. Conversely, the absence of a conventional EPA registration number is not by itself proof that a product is illegal. Check the package and your state pesticide regulator before use.

Be especially careful around edible gardens

Do not assume that a lawn-and-ornamental mole repellent can be used around vegetables, herbs, fruit, or other food crops simply because castor oil is a familiar ingredient. The permitted use site on the label controls. If edible crops are not listed, choose a legal, labeled approach or use physical exclusion instead.

What not to use against moles

Avoid dangerous or ineffective home remedies, including:

  • Mothballs.
  • Gasoline, diesel, or other petroleum products.
  • Bleach or lye.
  • Broken glass, razor blades, or other sharp objects placed in tunnels.
  • Exhaust fumes.
  • Flooding tunnels.

These methods can injure people, pets, and wildlife; contaminate soil or water; create fire or toxic-fume hazards; and may be illegal. Extension guidance from UC IPM and Rutgers rejects these approaches as unsafe, ineffective, environmentally damaging, or legally problematic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Electronic, ultrasonic, magnetic, and vibrating devices are also widely advertised, but extension sources report that research has not demonstrated reliable mole control from them. They are not a dependable substitute for an active-tunnel trap or properly designed exclusion.

When castor oil fails: trapping is more dependable

If you need reliable removal from one defined property, trapping is generally more dependable than repelling. University extension sources identify trapping as the most dependable or effective method for an established mole in a defined area. See the University of Minnesota guide and the UC Pest Notes publication.

  1. Locate a tunnel that appears to be used regularly.
  2. Compress a short section of the tunnel.
  3. Wait up to 24 hours and confirm that the mole has repaired it.
  4. Set a mole-specific trap in the active tunnel according to the trap manufacturer’s instructions.
  5. Anchor and conceal the trap as directed.
  6. Check it at least daily, or more often if the instructions require it.
  7. Handle any captured animal and dispose of it according to local law and the trap instructions.

A common reason for failure is placing a trap in a fresh but abandoned surface run or directly on a mound instead of in an active tunnel. If trapping is unsafe, impractical, or restricted where you live, contact a licensed wildlife-control professional familiar with local rules.

Other practical options

Exclude moles from small, valuable beds

For a small flower, bulb, or ornamental bed, buried hardware cloth or another physical barrier may protect the area. Exclusion is labor-intensive and usually impractical for an entire lawn. Barrier depth, mesh, overlaps, and installation details vary by site and authority, so use local extension recommendations rather than assuming one universal fence design. The Wildlife Damage Management guidance discusses exclusion considerations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not automatically treat for grubs

Moles eat earthworms and many types of soil invertebrates, not only grubs. Applying a broad insecticide simply because moles are present can harm beneficial soil organisms and has not been confirmed as a dependable way to control moles. Treat a confirmed lawn pest only when its presence and the product’s label justify treatment. See the UC Pest Notes discussion of food-source management and University of Missouri Extension guidance.

Which approach fits your situation?

Situation Most sensible next step
A few new ridges and you are unsure of the animal Identify the signs and test a tunnel for activity before treating.
You want a nonlethal first attempt Try a labeled castor-oil repellent with modest expectations and monitor it.
Heavy rain or frequent irrigation is expected Expect shorter persistence or leaching; trapping may be more reliable.
Damage covers a large lawn Do not rely on a small perimeter application; consider trapping or professional help.
A small flower or bulb bed is at risk Consider physical exclusion, which protects a defined area without simply displacing the animal.
Plants are being eaten or bark is gnawed Investigate voles or pocket gophers instead of assuming moles.
You need dependable removal from one property Use a properly placed mole trap or hire a qualified wildlife-control professional.
You are in the western United States Qualify expectations because the strongest castor-oil evidence concerns eastern moles.
Children, pets, a pond, or sensitive wildlife are nearby Follow the exact label, secure the concentrate, prevent runoff, and avoid unsupported homemade mixtures.
The problem is an enlarging or changing skin mole Do not use castor oil; arrange a medical assessment.

Do not confuse lawn moles with skin moles

Frequently Asked Questions

Will castor oil kill moles?

No. Castor-oil repellents are intended to make a treated area unattractive and displace moles. They do not reliably kill or remove them from the property.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How long does a castor-oil mole repellent last?

Duration varies. One small 1995 study reported reduced visible activity for 30 days at most sites and 65 days at one site, while a 2002 study found that most treated sites resumed activity within six weeks. Product labels may claim longer periods, but those claims are product-specific and affected by rain, irrigation, soil, and activity.

Can castor oil be used around vegetables?

Only if the specific product label permits use around edible crops. A product labeled for lawns or ornamentals should not be generalized to vegetables, herbs, or fruit.

What is the most reliable way to remove a mole from a lawn?

For an established mole in a defined area, trapping in a confirmed active tunnel is generally more dependable than repellents. Follow the trap instructions and local wildlife-control rules, or hire a qualified professional.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Castor oil is reasonable as a limited, label-directed experiment for active lawn moles, particularly when the goal is temporary, nonlethal protection of a defined area. The evidence is mixed, the effect may last only weeks, and heavy rain or irrigation can reduce persistence. Confirm that you have moles, use a product labeled for the site and pest, water and reapply only as directed, and switch to trapping or exclusion when you need dependable control. Never apply castor oil to a skin mole.
