Baking soda is not a proven general-purpose pest control. The evidence here does not support using it to kill ants or cockroaches, and Alabama Cooperative Extension specifically identifies it as ineffective for controlling fire-ant colonies. Sodium bicarbonate does have a limited role in managing some fungal plant diseases—but that is a different use, with meaningful limits and risk of plant injury.
Does baking soda kill ants or cockroaches?
The available evidence does not establish baking soda as an effective treatment for household ants or cockroaches. In particular, Alabama Cooperative Extension lists baking soda among home remedies scientifically proven ineffective for controlling fire-ant colonies. Its guidance is specific to fire ants in vegetable crops, so it should not be stretched into a claim about every pest or setting; it does, however, give no basis for relying on baking soda as an ant treatment.
A Texas A&M AgriLife Extension field evaluation offers a further caution. In a study established at Richard Moya Park in Travis County on May 17, 2011, plots treated with one tablespoon of baking soda per fire-ant mound had significantly greater mound activity than untreated plots at the 3-, 6- and 30-day checks. This was a single-site field evaluation, not a universal measure of effectiveness, but it does not support the remedy.
Neither the sources cited here nor the field evaluation establish that baking soda reliably kills cockroaches. A household recipe or anecdote should not be treated as proof of pest control.

What is baking soda used for in pest-management guidance?
The relevant documented use is against fungal diseases of plants, not insects. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s 2004 fact sheet identifies sodium bicarbonate as baking soda and describes its use as a pesticide active ingredient for fungal plant diseases. The fact sheet lists food commodities, turf, flowers and ornamental plants among the use sites and describes diluted foliar application. A fungicide’s use against plant disease does not make it an insecticide.
UF/IFAS Extension describes bicarbonate products as offering limited disease control: they may provide some preventive protection or help when disease levels are low. The proposed mechanism involves raising the pH on leaf surfaces. UF/IFAS says potassium bicarbonate generally works better and is less likely to injure plants than sodium bicarbonate.

Why baking soda can harm garden plants
More is not necessarily better. UF/IFAS warns that sodium bicarbonate solutions at concentrations of 1% or more can injure foliage, as can repeated applications that allow sodium to build up. Water-soluble bicarbonates can also be washed away by rain, so any reapplication should follow product directions rather than an improvised schedule. These are garden disease-management cautions, not advice for treating insects.
- Identify the plant disease before choosing a treatment; bicarbonates provide limited protection and are not a cure-all.
- Do not assume a baking-soda mixture is safe for every plant or concentration.
- Consider the difference between sodium and potassium bicarbonate: UF/IFAS reports better performance and lower phytotoxicity risk for potassium bicarbonate.
- Use any pesticide product only according to its label, including application rate and timing.
What to use instead for small household ants
For small household ants, Iowa State University Extension identifies liquid and gel baits as versatile, effective options. Worker ants can carry bait back to queens and other colony members. The right bait is not universal: UC IPM notes that performance depends on ant species, active ingredient, bait type and competing food, and that food preferences can change seasonally.

- PREFILLED RAT AND MOUSE BAIT STATION: The Tomcat Rat & Mouse Killer, Child & Dog Resistant, Disposable Station is a bait station pre-filled with one bait block that kills up to 10 rats (based on no-choice laboratory testing)
- RESISTANT TO TAMPERING BY CHILDREN AND DOGS: These rat and mouse stations are weather resistant and tamper resistant by children and dogs
- INDOOR AND OUTDOOR BAIT STATION: For killing mice and rats, place the bait stations in areas where rodent activity has been noticed, such as basements, garages, behind appliances, inside cabinets, or home exteriors
- CLEAR LID FOR EASY MONITORING: The rat and mouse station features a clear lid for easy bait monitoring, and can be disposed of once rat or mouse activity comes to an end
- DISPOSABLE STATION: Tomcat Rat & Mouse Killer Disposable Station is pre-filled and ready-to-use for rodent control
- Identify the ants if possible. Bait performance can vary by species, so avoid assuming one product will work equally well for every ant.
- Observe what they are feeding on. Choose a bait format and food type that matches their observed preference, while reducing nearby competing food when practical.
- Check the active ingredient and label. Follow the product’s directions for placement and use; do not substitute an improvised baking-soda treatment.
- Place bait safely. Keep it away from children and pets, as Iowa State Extension advises.
These recommendations concern small household ants. Fire-ant mound control is a different problem; consult local extension guidance for products and methods appropriate to the region and setting. Alabama Cooperative Extension’s vegetable-crop guidance is available at Fire Ant Control in Vegetable Crops.
