Not always. Whether you can install a shower screen yourself depends on the exact model, the wall and fixings it requires, and whether you can position the glass safely. Follow the product’s installation manual: if it requires a suitably qualified installer, the support or fixing method is uncertain, or drilling could compromise waterproofing, hire a professional. A capable DIYer may be able to install a model whose instructions allow it, but only with the required help, safe handling and careful adherence to the specified fixing and sealing details.
Is a professional installer legally required?
There is no universal installer-qualification rule established here for every shower screen. That does not mean a particular installation can be done by anyone, or that local rules are irrelevant. Product instructions, the wall construction, waterproofing details and the requirements that apply where you live all matter.

Manufacturers set requirements for their own products. For example, Ark Showers recommends trained professionals for its bathtub shower screens and warns that installation by someone not professionally qualified or trained could cause serious bodily injury or property damage. Its guidance is specific to its products, not proof that every screen must be professionally installed. The Shower Lab’s Portrait 22 manual, version 2.2 from March 2024, says that enclosure must be installed by suitably qualified individuals. If your product’s manual says this, treat it as a requirement for that model rather than assuming the advice for another screen applies.

Local requirements can also vary. The Australian Glass & Window Association’s shower-screen fact sheet addresses Australian technical considerations, including fixings through waterproofing membranes. That guidance is useful for understanding the risk, but it should not be treated as a universal code for other locations. Check locally applicable requirements where the work involves building rules, waterproofing or other regulated work.

When should you hire a professional?
Hire a suitably qualified installer when the manual requires one, or when you cannot confidently resolve a safety-critical part of the job. A screen can look simple once installed while still requiring precise support, careful handling and properly sealed fixings. The practical question is not just whether you can assemble the parts; it is whether you can complete the work in the conditions and sequence the manufacturer specifies.
- The manual requires qualified installation. Do not treat a product-specific instruction as optional because another screen was suitable for DIY.
- The glass is hard to lift or position safely. Large or heavy panels, awkward access and limited room to maneuver increase the risk of dropping or striking glass. If you cannot arrange enough capable help and safe handling, do not proceed alone.
- You cannot confirm the wall support or fixing method. The wall must support the screen as the manufacturer specifies. Delta, for example, says studs are required for its Amal screen; that requirement does not automatically apply to other products. If you do not know what is behind the tile or cannot verify the specified fixing point, ask an installer to assess it.
- Drilling may penetrate waterproofing. A hole through a membrane can compromise its integrity if it is not treated correctly. The Australian Glass & Window Association says care is needed when fixing through a waterproofing membrane and that sealing all fixing holes is crucial. If you cannot identify the membrane or follow the product and project requirements for those penetrations, hire someone with relevant experience.
- You are unsure about hidden services or finished surfaces. If you cannot establish where it is safe to drill, or you are concerned about damaging tile or another finished surface, pause rather than guessing.
- Parts are damaged, missing or inconsistent with the instructions. A damaged panel is not a DIY problem to work around. Contact the supplier or manufacturer before installation.
A professional is also the safer choice if the installation instructions are unavailable or unclear and you cannot get a reliable answer from the manufacturer. Do not infer fixing locations, substitute materials or improvise around missing support.
Can you install a shower screen yourself?
Possibly, if the specific screen’s written instructions permit it and you can meet every stated condition. A simple-looking design is not enough to establish that a job is suitable for DIY. Before committing, confirm that you can safely handle the glass, identify the required wall support, use the specified fixings and materials, and complete the sealing steps as directed.

Use this decision check before opening or assembling the product:
- Find the exact manual for your model. Confirm the product name or model matches the screen you bought. Read the whole installation sequence, not just the diagrams for the first step.
- Check who may install it. Look for any instruction that the work must be completed by trained or suitably qualified people. If it says so, arrange a professional installer.
- Confirm the wall and fixings. Identify the required substrate, support and fixing points, then verify that your wall provides them. Do not assume tile alone is the support or transfer another model’s requirements to yours.
- Plan the lift and positioning. Make sure you have the people and handling arrangements the job requires before moving glass. If you cannot position the panel without unsafe lifting, hire help.
- Understand the waterproofing and sealing details. Determine whether fixing holes will pass through a waterproofing layer and how the manual says those holes must be treated. Follow specified materials and curing instructions; do not substitute or guess.
- Inspect all glass and parts before fitting. Check for visible damage and confirm components match the instructions. If a panel has a crack, chip or other visible damage, stop and contact the supplier.
- Proceed only if each check is resolved. If you cannot establish a safe fixing method, a safe way to handle the glass or a reliable sealing plan, do not start drilling or installation.
These checks are a decision aid, not a substitute for the product’s manual. They do not establish a universal installation method: the screen design, wall and project conditions determine what applies.
Why glass handling changes the decision
Glass is not an ordinary panel to maneuver casually. The National Glass Association’s 2023 Frameless Shower Enclosure Design and Installation Manual advises safe lifting, protective eyewear, protecting glass edges and avoiding glass-to-glass contact. The Shower Lab also recommends at least two people for safe assembly of certain sections of its enclosure. These are meaningful safety considerations, but they are not a universal staffing rule for every screen; follow the instructions for your model and the demands of the actual lift.

Plan the route from the packaging to the installation position before lifting. Consider whether the panel can pass through the available access without striking a wall, another pane or a hard edge. Keep the glass edges protected as directed, and wear the protective equipment specified by the manufacturer and applicable guidance. If the route or final positioning requires a lift you cannot control, stop and get professional help rather than attempting it with inadequate assistance.
A suction-cup glass lifter may assist with handling when appropriate, but it does not make a heavy panel safe for one person to lift. Use such equipment only as a handling aid within a safe plan; it does not replace the people, technique or precautions required for the screen.
Why wall support and waterproofing matter
Fixings must suit the product and the wall
A screen’s fixing requirements are product-specific. Delta’s Amal installation guidance says studs are required for that screen. This is a useful example of why the exact manual matters, not a reason to assume every model uses studs or the same fixing arrangement. Establish what the manufacturer requires and whether the wall at each fixing point can provide it. If you cannot confirm that from the available construction or project information, have a qualified installer assess the substrate before drilling.

Do not compensate for an uncertain wall by choosing a different fixing, moving a bracket or changing the installation sequence without manufacturer approval. The product has to be supported as specified; a screen that appears stable at first is not evidence that an improvised fixing is suitable.
Penetrations through a membrane need care
Where installation involves fixing through a waterproofing membrane, the hole is part of the waterproofing risk, not just a mechanical detail. The Australian Glass & Window Association’s technical fact sheet says: “Care should be taken if fixing is required through waterproofing membrane and sealing of all fixing holes crucial to maintain the integrity of the membrane.” The statement is Australian technical guidance; what it means for a particular project depends on the membrane, the screen instructions and applicable local requirements.
Before drilling, find out whether the proposed fixing points intersect a waterproofed area and what the manufacturer and project documentation require for sealing them. If you cannot identify the membrane or determine a compatible treatment, do not guess at a sealant or rely on surface caulk as a substitute for a proper fixing-hole detail. Get advice from a professional familiar with the installation and waterproofing in question.

What to do if the glass is damaged
Inspect the glass before beginning installation and stop if you find a crack, chip or other visible damage. Delta’s Amal guidance says to stop installation and contact its support team if the glass has cracks, chips or other visible damage. Do not try to fit a damaged pane, conceal the damage or continue on the assumption that it will be harmless once installed. Contact the supplier or manufacturer and follow its instructions for the specific product.
If damage occurs while handling the panel, put the installation on hold and keep people clear of the affected area. Do not continue lifting or fitting it. Contact the supplier or manufacturer for direction; the available product guidance establishes stopping and contacting support, not a repair method.
How to choose an installer
When professional installation is appropriate, ask questions that reveal whether the installer understands this screen and this wall—not just whether they install shower screens in general. Provide the exact model and manual before agreeing on the work. Ask the installer to explain the fixing approach and how it matches the manufacturer’s requirements.
- Experience with the screen type: Ask about experience with this design, particularly if it is a frameless glass enclosure.
- Wall and fixing plan: Ask what substrate and support the product calls for, how the installer will confirm them and what happens if the wall does not meet the instructions.
- Waterproofing penetrations: If fixings may pass through a membrane, ask how those holes will be treated and which project or product requirements the approach follows.
- Scope of the quote: Confirm what preparation, installation, sealing and cleanup are included, and what conditions or additional work would change the scope. The evidence here does not establish a typical price or standard installation duration, so compare actual written quotes rather than relying on a generic figure.
- Parts and damage: Ask how missing or damaged components will be handled and who will contact the supplier if an issue appears before or during installation.
- Qualifications relevant to your location: Ask what training or qualification is appropriate for this work where you live. Do not assume a particular certification is legally required without checking local rules.
A useful answer should connect the proposed work to the screen’s manual and the wall conditions. Be cautious if someone proposes drilling before confirming the fixing requirements, dismisses a membrane penetration without explaining its treatment, or plans to work around damaged glass.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming all shower screens install alike. Requirements differ by model. Use the exact written instructions rather than a generic video or experience with another product.
- Treating professional installation as universally mandatory—or universally unnecessary. The relevant answer comes from the product instructions, the project and local requirements.
- Lifting glass alone because you have a suction cup. A lifter is not a substitute for safe staffing and handling.
- Drilling before confirming support and waterproofing. Resolve where the fixings go, what supports them and how penetrations are sealed before making holes.
- Continuing with chipped or cracked glass. Stop and contact the supplier or manufacturer.
- Improvising materials or sequence. Manufacturers specify installation conditions, fixings and sealing details for their designs. Do not replace them with guesses or shortcuts.
