No reliable evidence in the sources reviewed shows that seven living houseplants repel cockroaches in a home. Research about concentrated plant oils or sprays does not show that a potted mint, rosemary, lavender, or other plant will keep roaches away. For a practical response, use sticky traps to find activity, then address food, water, entry points, and hiding places.
Do houseplants repel cockroaches?
The authoritative guidance reviewed does not establish that living houseplants repel cockroaches. A plant in a pot is not equivalent to concentrated essential oil or a formulated pest-control product, so claims that particular houseplants prevent an infestation go beyond the available evidence.
Houseplants can still matter to household pest management in ordinary ways: avoid leaving standing water in saucers, and keep plant debris from accumulating. These are housekeeping measures, not evidence that a plant repels roaches. The National Pesticide Information Center’s houseplant pest-management guidance addresses plant care and pesticide considerations, not cockroach-repelling houseplants.
What smells do cockroaches hate?
Some research and pest-management manuals discuss plant-derived oils as potentially toxic to cockroaches or as possible repellents. The University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s 2022 Cockroach Management Manual discusses oils, including Apiaceae oils, but notes that standard application rates or doses have not been established and recommends combining oils with other integrated pest-management tools. That is not proof that the scent from a living plant works at room scale.

Rutgers Extension cautions that essential-oil sprays often work only when they directly contact an insect and provide little residual effect. A spray’s possible short-term effect should not be treated as lasting protection from an infestation. Sprays may also provide only temporary knockdown and can disperse cockroaches, according to UC IPM’s cockroach guidance.

How to find cockroach activity
Sticky traps, sometimes called glue boards, help detect and monitor cockroaches and identify active areas; they do not repel roaches or, by themselves, constitute a complete control plan. UC IPM advises placing traps along wall edges, in cupboards, under appliances, and near exterior doors. Check them daily until you can see where catches are concentrated. The agency puts it simply: “Use traps to monitor cockroach populations.”
UC IPM notes that one German cockroach female and her offspring can produce over 30,000 individuals in a year. That is a potential output attributed to this species under the guidance—not a typical household count—and illustrates why finding and addressing activity matters.

- Remove food and water: clean up crumbs and spills, store food securely, and fix or address sources of moisture. Do not leave pet food out overnight if you can avoid it.
- Reduce hiding places and access: clear clutter where roaches can hide and seal openings they can use to enter or move between spaces.
- Use traps to guide follow-up: keep monitoring the locations with catches so you can assess whether activity changes after prevention or control measures.
- Consider bait when appropriate: UC IPM says gel baits or bait stations placed near hiding places can be effective when food and water sources are removed. Follow the current product label and applicable local guidance.
- Get professional help for a serious infestation: UC IPM recommends considering a licensed pest-control professional when an infestation is serious.
These measures serve different purposes: traps monitor, sanitation and sealing reduce conditions and access, and baits are control tools. The 2019 product-availability table on UC IPM’s page is California-specific and should not be treated as current or nationwide; check local requirements and product labels where you live.
