The best way to hold a part on a small CNC mill is the simplest setup that locates it repeatably, resists the forces of the cut, and leaves the tool and holder clear. A compact vise is a practical starting point for block-shaped stock; soft jaws, a fixture plate, clamps, or a V-block are better suited to other shapes and operations.

How to choose a CNC workholding setup

Start with the part geometry and the cut, not with a fixture you hope will fit. The setup must locate the workpiece as well as resist machining loads; tightening harder does not by itself make a part repeatable. Consider contact area, cutting direction, risk of distortion or surface damage, tool access, reload needs, and compatibility with the machine’s table and travel.

A vise is versatile for suitable prismatic stock, but large, thin, or irregular parts may need another approach. A fixture plate is one option for thin work that cannot be clamped in a vise; the HSMWorks manual, Fundamentals of CNC Machining (2012), describes a fixture plate in those terms. The Toronto Metropolitan University Tormach PCNC440 Mill Manual documents options used in that lab, not a universal prescription for every small mill.

7 practical fixturing tips

1. Match the setup to the part and cut

For block-shaped stock with suitable flat, parallel surfaces, a compact milling vise is a flexible starting point. For thin, rounded, irregular, or oversized stock, consider whether jaws or clamps can support it securely without blocking the toolpath. Check stock dimensions against the machine table, axis travel, spindle clearance, and holder envelope before committing to a setup. Small-machine workholding guidance from Makera also emphasizes that vise suitability depends on the work and machine.

Timunr 6 Inch Milling Machine Vise without Base, Made of Robust Cast Iron,
  • Product size: Jaw width: 6.3 inch/16 cm, maximum opening: 6.3 inch/16 cm, jaw height: 1.75 inch/4.45 cm
  • Robust and Durable: The 6 inch mill vise without base is made of cast iron, and the jaw is made of steel, making it more durable and tough, not easy to rust, and extending its service life
  • Angle fixed design: The mill vise adopts a semicircular structure. When clamping parts, it will have a downward 45 degree clamping force to fix the workpiece, so that the workpiece does not float upward and the processing is more accurate
  • Excellent performance: The parallelism of the two jaws is within 0.025/100mm, and the fixed end of the screw rod is equipped with thrust bearings to reduce friction force. Moreover, the milling machine vise has a large clamping force to meet your use needs
  • Widely used: The 6 inch milling machine vise is suitable for machine tools such as machining centers, milling machines, grinders, etc

2. Align the vise and choose a recoverable datum

Before a new job, check that the vise’s fixed jaw is parallel to the relevant machine axis. Establish a datum that can be found again if the part needs another operation; a stop or other repeatable reference can help. Alignment and part-zeroing procedures are covered in Mentor CNC’s workholding and part-zeroing lesson.

3. Use soft jaws for shaped or finished surfaces

Machinable soft jaws can cradle rounded or irregular stock, increase supported contact, and help protect finished surfaces. Cut the jaw profile with the jaws loaded close to the condition in which they will clamp the work: clamping force can change jaw geometry. Soft jaws improve the fit, but the part still needs support against the direction of cutting.

  • 【PREMIUM QUALITY STRUCTURE】- The whole bench clamp is made of high-quality material with high hardness and stiffness. Designed for long-term service time.
  • 【POWERFUL CLAMPING FORCE】- After fine grinding treatment, the surface of the clamp is smooth and flat. Clamping the workpiece without shaking, and the machining accuracy is higher. Jaw Width: 6" Jaw Opening: 5.9".
  • 【HIGH ACCURACY SCREW】- The screw rod is made of high strength material which is not easy to deform, wear resistance, and achieves smooth rotation. Accurate to 0.002" on parallelism and squareness.
  • 【REINFORCED & ADJUSTABLE】- The solid base and swivel handle make the use more stable and convenient. Easy to operate and improving working efficiency.
  • 【WIDE APPLICATION】- It is an essential tool for fitters. Most work of the fitters is completed by using the clamping vise such as sawing, filing, chiseling, and some assembly and removal jobs.

4. Use a fixture plate for thin work or repeat setups

For thin parts that do not suit vise jaws, a fixture plate can provide another way to secure the work. Mount the plate securely, face it in place, and record its datum if you plan to reuse it. Threads accept fasteners, but they do not necessarily locate a part precisely: use dowel pins or shoulder bolts when positive repeat location matters. The HSMWorks manual discusses fixture plates and locating pins in its fixture-plate project.

5. Support clamp locations and check tool clearance

T-slot and toe clamps can suit large or irregular work that will not fit a vise. Place each clamp so its force pushes the part toward its locating and support surfaces, rather than bending unsupported thin stock. Check the toolpath and the full tool-and-holder envelope against clamps, studs, blocks, and fasteners; a cutter that clears the part can still strike the hardware.

Can be used upright without affecting the accuracy of clamping capacity. For CNC milling machines, drilling machines, and precision parts.
  • Accurately ground flat vise connects precisely with the machine tool, thus reaching an accuracy requirement of 0.0008" (0.02 mm)

6. Clean and seat every contact surface

Chips or burrs trapped between the workpiece, parallels, stop, or fixture can tilt or shift the part. Clean the contacts before loading, make sure parallels are seated and retained, and watch for the workpiece lifting as the vise closes. Contamination and clamp-clearance checks are also addressed in Mentor CNC’s workholding lesson.

7. Reserve special fixtures for jobs that need them

A V-block and clamp set is a practical option for cylindrical stock. For frequent repeats, a pinned fixture plate may reduce the work of relocating parts; for a one-off, a vise or simple clamps may be sufficient. Compare setup and reload effort, repeat location, cutter access, deformation risk, and machine compatibility before investing in a dedicated fixture.

Compare common small-shop setups

Setup Best suited to Key checks
Compact vise Block-shaped stock with suitable flat, parallel surfaces Jaw capacity and height, alignment, part support, machine travel, and tool access
Soft jaws Shaped or delicate stock, including repeat parts that benefit from a custom jaw profile Jaw profile under clamping load, support against cutting forces, and surface protection
Fixture plate Thin work or jobs requiring repeat setups Secure mounting, facing in place, datum, fastener clearance, and pins or shoulder bolts for repeat location
T-slot or toe clamps Large or irregular work that does not suit a vise Support beneath clamp points, force direction, table compatibility, and tool-and-holder clearance
V-block and clamp set Cylindrical stock Stable seating, secure restraint, tool access, and compatibility with the table and travel

Check fit before buying or building

  • Confirm the workpiece fits the machine’s travel and available spindle clearance.
  • For a vise, check jaw capacity and height against the stock and required tool access.
  • For clamps or a plate, check the table or T-slot pattern and fastener clearance.
  • For any setup, make sure the part is supported where the cutting forces act and that the tool and holder clear the hardware.

There is no universally best configuration: the right choice depends on the part, operation, machine envelope, and whether repeat loading justifies added fixture work.
