Some garden mums return for years, but no care routine can guarantee it. Success depends first on choosing a perennial, winter-hardy cultivar suited to your climate, then giving it enough time to establish and protecting its shallow roots from winter conditions. Florist mums may not be hardy outdoors.
Which mums can come back?
“Garden” and “hardy” are commonly used for mums expected to survive winter and grow as perennials. Florist mums, by contrast, may not be winter hardy. As Illinois Extension horticulture educator Richard Hentschel explains, “Garden and Hardy are terms that have been used interchangably to describe a mum that will survive the winter and become perennial in our gardens.” He adds, “There are mums used in the floral industry that are not winter hardy and cannot be expected to survive.” Illinois Extension
Check the plant label for the cultivar and its stated hardiness, then compare that with your local climate. The University of Minnesota Extension says its selected northern-hardy perennial mums are reliably hardy in Zones 3–9; that range applies to those varieties, not every mum sold as a garden mum. When should you plant mums?
| Timing | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Spring | Preferred when perennial survival is the priority: the plant has the growing season to establish roots before winter. Illinois Extension, 2021 |
| Fall | Plant early rather than waiting until late fall. A newly planted mum may have a small root system when winter arrives, leaving it more vulnerable to freeze-thaw damage. Illinois Extension, 2022 |
This timing advice comes from Illinois Extension and reflects regional guidance; local climate and the plant’s cultivar also matter.

#1 Best Overall
- Zones 5 to 9
- Blooming Season: Spring to fall
- Soil and Water: Prefers well-draining soil. Water regularly
- Light: Full sun
- Ideal temperatures are between 55 degrees Fahrenheit and 75 degrees Fahrenheit
Choose a site that supports healthy roots
- Sunlight: Choose full sun. Illinois Extension recommends more than six hours of sunlight daily for perennial mums. Illinois Extension, 2022
- Drainage: Use moist, well-drained soil, not a low spot where water stands or heavy soil stays saturated. Illinois Extension, 2021
- Exposure: A sheltered location can reduce exposure to severe conditions. Keep the plant watered during dry weather; drought stress can reduce its chances of surviving winter. Illinois Extension, 2021
Protect mums through winter
Mums have shallow roots that can be injured when the soil repeatedly freezes and thaws. As the ground begins to freeze, apply about four inches of mulch around the plant to moderate soil-temperature swings and help prevent winter heaving. Illinois Extension also advises applying mulch in late fall. Illinois Extension, 2021 Illinois Extension, 2022
Leave old stems standing through winter for added protection. Remove the dead growth after new growth resumes in spring. Illinois Extension, 2022

Encourage bushier growth and more blooms
When spring growth reaches approximately four to six inches, pinch off the tips. Repeat once or twice before July to encourage a shorter, fuller plant with more blooms. Illinois Extension, 2022
Mums flower in response to long nights and shorter days. Outdoor lights that interrupt darkness can delay flowering; early- and late-blooming cultivars differ in the night length that triggers flowers. Illinois Extension, 2021

Why a mum may not return
- It was a florist mum or a cultivar not suited to the local winter.
- It was planted too late in fall to establish a substantial root system.
- Its shallow roots were damaged by repeated freezing and thawing, especially in poorly drained soil.
- The plant experienced drought stress or other harsh site conditions.
These are risks, not a checklist that can predict an individual plant’s survival. Extension guidance does not provide a controlled survival percentage or establish that any particular routine guarantees annual return.
