The result comes from a 2021 study of a crystal superlattice, a roughly 200-nanometre-thick experimental specimen, not a product available for construction projects.
What the 1,000-fold result actually measures
The researchers reported photocurrent about 10³ times higher in their superlattice than in a barium titanate (BaTiO₃) layer of similar thickness. Photocurrent is the electrical current produced in response to illumination; it is not the same quantity as a solar module’s power-conversion efficiency, which describes how much incident sunlight becomes usable electrical power.
The comparison is also specific: the control was a BaTiO₃ film, not a conventional silicon panel. The paper reports that the enhancement could be tuned by changing the superlattice periodicity and persisted under AM1.5 illumination. These findings do not establish a 1,000-fold increase in panel efficiency, installed-system output, or electricity generated on a building.
What the researchers built
The 2021 study in Science Advances examined a ferroelectric-paraelectric superlattice: a repeating arrangement combining ferroelectric barium titanate with paraelectric strontium titanate (SrTiO₃) and calcium titanate (CaTiO₃). Rather than making a conventional finished module, the team fabricated a thin crystalline material for laboratory testing.

Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg’s 2021 release describes the specimen as 500 crystalline layers totaling about 200 nanometres in thickness. The layers were made by vaporizing crystals with a high-power laser and redepositing the material on carrier substrates. In laser-light tests, the release reports current up to 1,000 times stronger than in pure BaTiO₃ of similar thickness, while using almost two-thirds less BaTiO₃.
How this differs from a construction-ready solar panel
Conventional photovoltaic modules are engineered and rated as complete products, with performance assessed in terms relevant to electricity generation. The superlattice result concerns a material’s photoresponse. The cited study and university account do not provide module-scale power-conversion efficiency, output, cost, installation requirements, or outdoor performance for a panel made from this material.

- Measured quantity: photocurrent in a thin-film material, not commercial module efficiency.
- Reference material: a similar-thickness BaTiO₃ film, not silicon technology.
- Test context: laser-light measurements are described in the university release; the study also reports persistence under AM1.5 illumination.
- Durability evidence: the release says the measured response remained nearly constant over six months. That is not a full-module lifetime or outdoor-weathering result.
The university release notes that ferroelectric crystals can produce a photovoltaic effect without the p-n junction used in conventional cells. It also says further work was needed to determine exactly what causes the unusually strong effect. A promising laboratory response is not, by itself, evidence of a practical manufacturing process.
Can you buy or specify these panels?
The cited sources describe experimental material specimens and do not identify a commercial panel or purchase route. They also do not establish subsequent independent module-scale replication or commercialization. For a construction project, this research is not a basis for specifying a system, estimating its energy yield, or comparing bids. Use performance and certification information for the actual modules offered by a supplier; do not treat the superlattice’s photocurrent result as a panel rating.

Where the headline came from
The “1,000x efficiency” wording appeared in a BGR article published May 20, 2025. The underlying research was published several years earlier, in 2021. The original study’s result is meaningful as a materials-science finding, but “1,000x efficiency” overstates what was measured and implies a comparison with commercial solar panels that the primary study does not make.
