Do Coffee Grounds Repel Slugs and Snails? What Works in the Garden

Used coffee grounds are not a proven slug or snail barrier. Here’s what the caffeine and brewed-coffee evidence actually shows, plus practical ways to protect seedlings.

Scattering used coffee grounds around plants is not a proven way to repel or kill slugs and snails. Evidence about caffeine solutions and brewed coffee is sometimes cited in support of the idea, but those are different treatments—not proof that dry spent grounds make a reliable garden barrier. For vulnerable seedlings, use targeted measures such as cloches, morning watering and hand-picking instead.

Do coffee grounds keep slugs and snails away?

There is no good basis for treating a ring of used coffee grounds as dependable slug or snail control. Washington State University Extension states that “there is no published evidence that coffee grounds will repel or kill any garden pests” in its coffee-grounds fact sheet. That is a general garden statement rather than a slug-specific trial, but it directly addresses the claim.

One 2024 study abstract reports that grounds did not seem effective against the invasive snail species tested and might serve as food. The authors also note that grounds appeared less deterrent than coffee powder, plausibly because grounds contain less caffeine. That result applies to the tested species and conditions; it does not establish how every slug or snail species will respond in every garden. The full article is available at Scientific Reports.

Why caffeine findings do not prove that grounds work

The commonly cited positive result concerns caffeine, not a dry barrier made of spent grounds. A 2002 brief communication in Nature reported that caffeine solutions applied to foliage or growing media could kill or repel slugs and snails. The paper does not establish that scattering used grounds around plants has the same effect. Read the Nature study.

Garden Safe Slug & Snail Bait Granules, Kills Slugs & Snails, 2 Lb
  • KILLS SLUGS & SNAILS: Slugs and snails begin to die within three to six days after bait is ingested.
  • FOR LAWNS, GARDENS & GREENHOUSES: Use on the lawn or on the soil around any outdoor ornamentals, vegetable gardens, fruits, berries, citrus and crop plants where slug or snail control is needed.
  • CONTAINS IRON PHOSPHATE: This bait contains a combination of iron phosphate, which is a plant nutrient that occurs in soils, with slug and snail bait additives.
  • CAN BE USED AROUND PETS & WILDLIFE: Iron is an essential mineral for plants and animals, but large amounts are toxic to slugs and snails when ingested.
  • FOR ORGANIC GARDENING: Always read the entire label and follow all directions and precautions.

Oregon State University Extension’s 2025 guidance describes brewed-coffee applications and underlying caffeine-solution research. It reports that a 1% to 2% caffeine solution caused all slugs to leave treated soil and die of caffeine poisoning, and that a 2% solution applied to orchid growing media reportedly killed 95% of snails. These are findings about prepared solutions and specific treatments—not a recipe for grounds. See OSU Extension’s article for the details.

If you try brewed coffee, use the right treatment and caution

OSU Extension gives recipes for brewed coffee, not dry grounds: mix one part water with two parts strong brewed coffee for a 1–2% soil drench, or nine parts water with one part brewed coffee for a foliar spray. These directions should not be interpreted as proof that spent grounds repel slugs, or as a reason to use a caffeine concentrate.

Corry's Slug and Snail Killer Bait 1.75 Pounds
  • Slug and snail bait kills slugs and snails in 3 to 6 days
  • People and pets can enter the area immediately after slug bait is applied
  • Slug and snail killer remains effective after rain
  • Corrys slug and snail killer can be used on lawns, vegetable and fruit gardens, ornamentals, and more
  • Snail killer for garden is also ideal for vegetable gardens, up to and including the day of harvest

Before spraying edible or ornamental plants broadly, OSU recommends testing diluted coffee on a few sample leaves and waiting a few hot, sunny days to check for leaf burn or other damage. Grounds also have downsides when overused: they can temporarily tie up nitrogen and may inhibit seed germination or slow plant growth. WSU likewise notes reduced germination and growth in experiments using grounds. Use them sparingly in soil or compost rather than piling them around seedlings. OSU soil scientist Linda Brewer cautions, “The big message is that generally people are too enthusiastic. You really need to take the recommended dosages to heart. I’ve seen raised beds ruined by too much coffee.”

Protect the plants slugs and snails are actually damaging

Slugs and snails are part of garden ecosystems, and many species do not commonly damage healthy live plants. The Royal Horticultural Society recommends focusing control on vulnerable seedlings and soft young growth rather than trying to eradicate every gastropod. Its slug and snail guidance describes practical options:

Monterey Sluggo Snail & Slug Killer Bundled with Measuring Spoon - OMRI Listed for Organic Gardening - Wildlife and Pet Friendly - 1 lb Shaker can
  • ORGANIC SLUG AND SNAIL CONTROL - Sluggo is one of the best snail and slug control products to protect your plants from snail and slug damage. Use in lawns, gardens, greenhouses, ornamentals, vegetables, fruits, berries, citrus and crop plants.
  • FOR ORGANIC GARDENING – OMRI Listed for Organic Gardening. Organic Materials Review Institute reviews products to ensure it complies with all organic standards under the USDA’s National Organic Program (NOP).
  • PETS AND WILDLIFE FRIENDLY - Sluggo can be used around pets and wildlife. It contains iron phosphate, which naturally occurs soil, and attracts slugs and snails without being harmful to other animals.
  • GRANULAR FORMULA – Scatter the slug and snail bait granules on the ground or near the plants to be protected. Can be applied using a standard broadcast spreader for large areas. For best results apply bait during the evening.
  • EFFECTIVE AFTER RAIN - After application, rain or sprinkling will not change the effectiveness of the product on slugs, bugs, or snails. If heavy rainfall occurs, reapply to allow snails and slugs access to the bait.
  • Use sturdy transplants or cloches. Protect small seedlings and especially vulnerable plants while they establish.
  • Water in the morning. This avoids leaving the surface damp overnight, when slugs and snails are most active.
  • Hand-pick on mild, damp evenings. Check hiding places and move collected animals away from plants where appropriate.
  • Encourage predators. Birds, frogs, toads, hedgehogs, slow-worms and ground beetles all feed on slugs or snails. Avoid measures that unnecessarily harm this garden wildlife.
  • Consider traps or nematodes selectively. Nematodes need moist, warm soil and generally will not control snails; check the RHS guidance for conditions and limitations.

Why a barrier may disappoint

A visible ring around a plant can feel like a simple fix, but barrier claims need evidence under garden conditions. The RHS says many materials believed to repel gastropods lack scientific support. In its garden-realistic trial, tested copper tape, bark mulch, eggshells, sharp grit and wool pellets did not reduce slug damage under the trial conditions. That trial did not test coffee grounds, so it is not direct evidence about grounds; it is a reason to be cautious about assuming that a rough or unpleasant-looking perimeter will protect plants. The RHS project record describes nine replicated blocks of paired patio and bed growing conditions in its 2018 experiment. A separate RHS account reports monitoring 108 lettuces across nine patio pots and nine raised beds for six weeks.
