No reliable five-plant formula for keeping a yard mole-free is established by the university extension sources reviewed. Marigolds are an untested suggestion; mole plant, castor bean and garlic are described as doubtful or unproven. If moles are disrupting a garden, small-area fencing or trapping is better supported than planting a supposed repellent.
Do plants repel moles?
Some garden advice names marigolds, mole plant, castor bean or garlic as mole deterrents, but the evidence does not support presenting them as dependable controls.
- Marigolds: Penn State Extension says marigold borders may repel moles, but the method has not been scientifically tested. Penn State Extension
- Mole plant or caper spurge (Euphorbia lathyris): Penn State calls its effectiveness doubtful, and the University of Missouri says no known research supports the living-repellent claim. Penn State Extension; University of Missouri Extension
- Castor bean (Ricinus communis): Penn State also calls its effectiveness doubtful. UC Agriculture and Natural Resources says it has not been proven effective in conducted trials for protecting plantings from moles, voles or gophers. Penn State Extension; UC Agriculture and Natural Resources
- Garlic: UC ANR likewise lists garlic among plants not proven effective in conducted trials for protecting plantings from moles, voles or gophers. UC Agriculture and Natural Resources
Daffodils and alliums also appear in popular garden claims, but the university extension sources reviewed did not establish them as effective mole repellents. That does not prove no research exists elsewhere; it means there is no sound basis here for recommending a five-plant recipe.
Why mole tunnels can damage plants
Moles tunnel through soil in search of animal food, not to eat garden vegetation. Their digging can disturb roots, and visible damage to a bulb or plant does not by itself show that a mole ate it. Missouri Extension says moles rarely eat flower bulbs, ornamentals or other vegetation while tunneling; Penn State notes they are often blamed for plant damage. What to try instead of planting a repellent

Choose the scale of the response
For a bed or small garden, exclusion is a targeted way to protect the plants you care about. For broader or persistent activity, trapping is a more defensible control approach than relying on plant folklore. Check local extension advice and product labels before acting, since conditions and rules can vary by location.
Do not rely on frightening devices as a shortcut
