DIY Large-Format Book Press: How a Screw Press Works and What to Know Before Building

A standing book press drives a platen toward a bed with a screw. See what the large-format project documents, how a separate wooden plan differs, and what to check before building.

A large-format book press uses a screw to drive a platen down toward a bed, compressing material between them. Paul’s CNC-assisted project featured by Hackaday is intended for bookbinding or printing and is also described as a way to press water from handmade paper. It is one particular build, not a complete set of dimensions or a universal plan.

How a standing book press works

A standing press has four basic parts: vertical pillars, a stout screw, a platen, and a bed. The material sits on the bed; turning the screw lowers the platen and applies pressure. A historical technical description puts it simply: “The typical standing press (Fig. 2, p. 11) consists of vertical pillars, a long stout screw, a platen, and the bed.” (Bookbinding, Wikimedia Commons scan.)

The screw converts rotation into downward movement. The frame supports the load while the platen spreads pressure over the work. Pressing boards or other suitable flat supports can help keep the work aligned and distribute the force; the right setup depends on what is being pressed.

What Paul’s large-format project shows—and what it does not

Hackaday’s March 3, 2020 feature describes Paul designing a large-format press in CAD and fabricating many parts on a CNC router. It presents the build as straightforward and points to a project video for a step-by-step guide. The article describes possible uses including bookbinding, printing, and squeezing water from handmade paper. Those are uses attributed to this project; they do not establish that every book press is appropriate for every printing process.

The indexed article does not provide a complete bill of materials or verified dimensions for Paul’s press. CAD and CNC were part of his build, but the article says those methods are not strictly required for the overall design. That is not enough information to reproduce the exact press or determine its capacity. See Hackaday’s project feature for the source article and its linked video.

A separate wooden press plan: specifications belong to that design

Darbin Orvar publishes a different, traditional wooden press plan. It describes half-blind dovetails and a heavy-duty, single-lead Acme-thread screw. The maker used white oak, while the plan calls for 2-inch (5 cm) wood and a 1/4-inch plate made from aluminum or steel, plus screws for the mechanism. These are specifications of that plan—not general requirements for book presses and not dimensions for Paul’s large-format build.

Anyone selecting a book press screw or metal component should check thread type, dimensions, and mounting compatibility against the chosen design rather than assuming that parts fit across plans. Details are at Darbin Orvar’s Bookbinding Press Building Plan. A separate bundle plan covers a press, sewing frame, book vise, and cutting plough if a broader set of bookbinding tools is the goal.

How to choose an approach

Approach What the source establishes Best fit to consider
Paul’s large-format project CAD design and CNC fabrication of many parts; described for bookbinding or printing, and for pressing water from handmade paper. Exact dimensions and a complete bill of materials are not stated in the Hackaday article. A reader interested in the large-format concept who can consult the linked project video and establish suitable dimensions and materials for their own work.
Darbin Orvar wooden press plan Traditional wooden construction, half-blind dovetails, heavy-duty single-lead Acme screw, 2-inch wood, and a 1/4-inch aluminum or steel component. The plan supplies cut lists and construction guidance. A reader seeking a documented wooden press plan and prepared to follow its specific cut list and mechanism details.

The two sources do not provide matching measurements, so their press capacities cannot be ranked directly. Compare intended work size, woodworking and fabrication access, frame and platen materials, and screw mounting before committing to either design.

Using a press with books of different sizes

For historical guidance on arranging a stack, Joseph W. Zaehnsdorf’s 1897 The Art of Bookbinding advises centering books under the screw with pressing boards. When pressing mixed sizes together, it says to put the largest book at the bottom and use blocks or pressing boards between sizes to keep the screw centered. This is historical practice, not modern conservation guidance; valuable or fragile books may need specialist care. The passage appears in “Drawing-In And Pressing”.

Printing presses and the screw mechanism

Screw presses have also been adapted for printing. The American Bookbinders Museum’s account of the historical Imperial Arming and Printing Press describes a lever system that increased the printed area per pull from half a sheet to a full sheet. That figure concerns the historical Imperial press, not Paul’s DIY build or a general performance claim about book presses. Read the museum’s Imperial Arming and Printing Press account.
