DIY concrete projects range from small planters and stepping stones to furniture and outdoor builds; the right choice depends on the form, batch size, handling weight, and where the finished piece will be used. Start with a simple cast item if you are new to concrete, and follow the chosen mix’s label for proportions and mixing. Wet concrete can cause skin irritation or chemical burns, and concrete dust is a separate hazard, so use suitable protection before mixing or finishing.

Wondering what you can make with concrete at home? Here are 45 ideas grouped by project family and practical scale. This is an idea roundup, not a claim that every item has the same difficulty, mix requirements, or verified design.

Before You Start: Safety and Materials

OSHA warns that exposure to wet concrete can cause skin irritation or serious chemical burns. Wear alkali-resistant gloves, eye protection, protective clothing, and waterproof footwear when handling wet concrete. Cement dust can irritate the respiratory tract and skin; use appropriate controls and follow the product safety information for mixing, cutting, drilling, or grinding.

Choose a mix for the intended project rather than assuming one bagged product suits every casting or build. Estimate quantity from the form’s dimensions, then use the water amount and mixing method specified by the product. Concrete Network cautions that excess water can reduce strength. Its examples describe bucket mixing for small items around 30 pounds or less, wheelbarrow mixing for some 60–80-pound batches, and a portable mixer for larger quantities; these are examples, not universal limits.

For garden objects where lower weight matters, hypertufa is an alternative. Oregon State University Extension gives a relative-volume recipe of 3 parts coir, 2 parts Portland cement Type I–II, and 3 parts perlite. It recommends drainage holes for planters, waiting a few days before demolding, and about a week before planting. Hypertufa can crack or break if handled roughly. OSU estimates sand-based hypertufa may last about 20 years and lighter perlite hypertufa around 10 years with gentle handling; those are source-specific estimates, not guarantees.

Small Castings and Decorative Projects

These ideas use molds or containers to shape small objects. Form complexity, mix choice, and finishing needs vary; check the chosen product’s instructions and make a test piece when appearance matters.

  1. Concrete planters: Cast a container in a silicone mold or recycled plastic containers. Plan a way to form a drainage hole, such as a dowel, and add water gradually so the mix does not become too thin. HGTV and QUIKRETE offer planter tutorials.
  2. Hypertufa planters: Make stone-look garden containers with the lighter hypertufa alternative described above. Handle them gently, and include drainage.
  3. Concrete bowl planters: Use nested forms to shape a bowl, leaving space for soil and a drainage opening.
  4. Succulent pots: Cast small pots in compact molds, with a drainage hole suited to the planter design.
  5. Concrete candleholders: Cast a holder around a removable insert. Keep the use decorative and verify heat suitability rather than assuming ordinary concrete is safe for sustained heat.
  6. Tea-light holders: Make small, simple casts with a recess formed by an insert.
  7. Concrete bookends: Cast matched shapes in simple forms and add a protective base to avoid scratching furniture.
  8. Concrete coasters: Use a small mold to test color or surface finish; consider how the finished item will affect surfaces when wet.
  9. Concrete serving tray: Cast a shallow decorative tray and add handles only with an appropriate attachment method. Do not assume a sealer makes it suitable for direct food contact.
  10. Concrete doorstop: Cast a simple wedge or other stable shape, with any embedded hardware suited to the design.
  11. Address numbers: Cast numbers or attach suitable exterior-rated numbers to a concrete backer.
  12. House-number plaque: Make a plaque with a mounting approach appropriate to its weight and the wall.
  13. Garden markers: Cast small labels or stamp lettering into a marker for garden beds.
  14. Concrete vases: Cast a decorative vessel with an insert or suitable interior treatment if it will hold water.
  15. Pendant-lamp shade: Treat this as a design project requiring an appropriate mold and safe, compatible electrical components; do not improvise wiring.

Stepping Stones, Walkways, and Garden Builds

Outdoor projects need forms and placement suited to their exposure and use. The project examples below are ideas, not engineering specifications; verify dimensions, base preparation, drainage, and local requirements for the particular build.

  1. Stepping stones: Cast individual stones in forms for a garden path.
  2. Leaf-imprint stepping stones: Use a leaf to create a surface impression in a cast stone.
  3. Mosaic stepping stones: Arrange tile or other decorative pieces in a form, keeping the finished walking surface safe underfoot.
  4. Molded pavers: Use reusable molds to make units for a path or patio; cure and place them according to the mix and project instructions.
  5. Small garden walkway: Build a path from individual pavers or formed sections, with a plan for stable support and drainage.
  6. Garden edging: Cast edging blocks or use forms to create a border for a bed or path.
  7. Downspout splash block: Make a shaped block that directs water away from the building, and check that it does not send runoff toward another problem area.
  8. Bird bath: Cast a basin and support as separate pieces if that suits the design; ensure the assembly is stable and can be cleaned.
  9. Garden water bowl: Make a decorative basin with a stable base. Verify any sealing approach for ongoing water exposure.
  10. Small fountain basin: Design the basin and waterproofing for the intended recirculating-water use; test it before final placement.
  11. Fire-pit seating surround: Use concrete pieces as a surrounding landscape feature only when their placement and heat exposure are suitable. Do not treat ordinary concrete as a firebox liner.
  12. Fire-bowl surround: Build a decorative surround for a properly designed fire feature. Verify heat and fuel safety for the complete assembly; do not use a homemade concrete casting as a combustion system.
  13. Small equipment pad: Consider a pad for an air conditioner or generator only after checking manufacturer requirements, clearances, anchoring, and local rules.
  14. Trash-can pad: Create a stable outdoor surface for bins, with drainage and placement planned for the site.
  15. Shed ramp: Cast or form a ramp with a stable base and a surface appropriate for traction. Account for movement between the ramp and shed.

Furniture and Larger Outdoor Projects

Furniture and larger builds involve more substantial forms, handling, and finishing. Concrete Network’s mixing examples suggest scaling the mixing setup with batch size, but actual quantities and design requirements depend on the project. Do not assume a decorative mix or casting is suitable for structural or load-bearing use.

  12. Mailbox-post footing: Check placement rules and utility locations, then select a footing approach appropriate to the site.
  13. Fence-post footing: Plan post support, drainage, and depth for local soil and frost conditions; locate utilities before digging.
  14. Basketball-hoop footing: Follow the hoop manufacturer’s footing and installation instructions exactly, and assess whether excavation and placement call for professional help.
  15. Concrete fire bowl: Treat this as a specialized project, not a routine decorative casting. Confirm that the full design and materials are suitable for the intended heat and fuel before building.

Repair and Surface-Finish Projects

Some useful home concrete work is about renewing an existing surface rather than casting a new object. Diagnose movement, water entry, or widespread deterioration before covering or patching a surface.

  1. Crack repair: Choose a repair approach only after distinguishing a minor surface crack from movement, displacement, or water intrusion that needs diagnosis.
  2. Small-stoop resurfacing: Resurface only sound, well-prepared concrete with a product intended for the job.
  3. Spall patching: Remove unsound material and use a repair product suited to the defect and substrate; exposed or corroding steel requires further assessment.
  4. Concrete staining: Test a small area first, since existing coatings, contaminants, and patches can affect the result.
  5. Painted patio stencil: Use a coating intended for concrete and exterior exposure, following its preparation and application instructions.
  6. Countertop sample tile: Make a sample to test the actual mix, color, finish, and sealer before building a larger countertop.

This list intentionally offers project ideas rather than universal recipes. Verify the form, mix, water, cure, finish, weight, and exposure requirements for each design with project-specific instructions. Consult local rules where work affects structures, utilities, drainage, or required access.

Is hypertufa lighter than concrete?

Hypertufa is used for stone-look garden objects when reduced weight matters. OSU Extension’s example uses coir, Portland cement, and perlite; it also cautions that hypertufa can crack or break if handled roughly.

How much concrete should I mix?

Estimate the amount from the form’s dimensions and follow the chosen product’s instructions. Scale the mixing method to the batch, using source examples only as guidance rather than universal thresholds.

What protection do I need when working with concrete?

Wet concrete can irritate or burn skin, and cement dust can irritate the respiratory tract and skin. OSHA recommends alkali-resistant gloves and eye protection for wet-concrete exposure; use suitable clothing and task-appropriate controls, and follow current product safety information.

Can regular concrete be used for a fire bowl or load-bearing furniture?

Do not assume so. Verify heat suitability for fire features and project-specific design suitability for anything load-bearing. The general project examples in this roundup are not engineering approval.

How long should hypertufa dry before planting?

Oregon State University Extension recommends waiting a few days before demolding and about a week before planting for its described hypertufa method. Follow the instructions for the specific materials and conditions.
